Book excerpt: Martin Luther King's legacy for today's activists, fifty years after his death. Since his death on April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King's legacy has influenced generations of activism. Edited and with a lead essay by Brandon Terry, this volume explores what this legacy can and cannot do for activism in the present. King spent the months leading up to his death organizing demonstrations against the Vietnam War and planning the Poor People's Campaign, a “multiracial army of the poor” that would march on Washington in pursuit of economic justice. Thus the spring of 1968 represented a hopeful, albeit chaotic set of possibilities; King, along with countless other activists, offered both ethical and strategic solutions to the multifaceted problems of war, racism, and economic inequality. With a critical eye on both the past and present, this collection of essays explores that moment of promise, and how, in the fifty years since King's death, historical forces have shaped what we claim as a usable past in fighting the injustices of our time. Contributors Christian G. Appy, Andrew Douglas, Bernard E. Harcourt, Elizabeth Hinton, Samuel Moyn, Ed Pavlić, Aziz Rana, Barbara Ransby, Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, Brandon M. Terry, Jeanne Theoharis, Thad Williamson

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Boston: Fifty Years' Recollections of the New England Metropolis The intent of this book is to tell the story of Fifty Years Of Boston, the story of the progress and development of the city in the last past half century and of the institutions and men identified with it, through a series of reminiscences rather than in the formal manner of the direct historical narrative. History and biography indeed are woven into the relation, but with lighter thread, though none the less accurate, than in the conventional web. The reminiscent method was adopted because as a resident of Boston for the most part of this eventful half century, as an active journalist from the early eighteen sixties, and a managing or a chief editor of Boston daily newspapers for considerable periods, the editor has seen Boston grow from the interesting but little historic city of fifty years back into the splendid metropolis of light and leading of today; and through his newspaper connections has come in touch directly or indirectly with leaders of the epoch reviewed, merchants, financiers, professional men, politicians, officials of city and state, the master minds of the community that "make the wheels go round." During this time he has seen the rise of many individuals and firms who have left their impress on trade, and commerce and industry; has seen great changes wrought in the physical and spiritual city; the development of great institutions, educational, learned, devoted to the arts and sciences, that have made Boston a treasure house for American scholars and students; and the initiation of public utilities of subsequent country-wide adoption. Although the story of the evolution of all the greater American cities is wonderful and worth the telling, yet certain developments in Boston within the period covered by this work are of particular moment, especially since it was the parent city of the telephone and of the electric subway; and since it was also the first American seaboard city to take advance steps in regard to the systematic development as a port. While this story might well have been told by any trained newspaper man, the editor feels himself particularly fortunate as the narrator in that it has been his personal privilege to come in direct contact with various leading citizens who have had the commanding influence in certain formative periods of the city's comparatively recent growth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Your Old Landmarks of Boston is a perfect storehouse of Information," Henry W. Longfellow told Samuel Adams Drake almost a century ago. That being true a hundred years ago, the praise is even more relevant today, when many of the old and venerated landmarks are gone, victims of time and progress in a rapidly changing world. One hundred years ago the author bemoaned the disappearance of the really historic buildings of Boston. This monumental history of Boston work was his appeal to the historical conscience. He wrote: "For Fifty years our men of progress have been pulling down the old and building up the new city. The Great Fire of 1872 left few of its original features, except in the North End, and in and about Dock Square. It is only at the price of perpetual vigilance that a few of these old edifices, known throughout the whole world, remain on their foundation at this hour." Drake not only deplored their disappearance but, like a proper Bostonian, did something about it, giving posterity an imperishable record. This treasure of his historic Bostonian lore goes a long way in reconstructing the Boston of our forefathers, rebuilding in fact and fancy their habitations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, the Central Artery snaked its way through Boston, destroying century-old neighborhoods and bustling commercial districts in the very heart of the city. Designed to open Boston's downtown to convenient car and truck access, the highway cut a two-mile-long gash through the nation's oldest and most historic city, destroying or casting a shadow over some of its most architecturally significant buildings. By the time the Central Artery was completed in 1959, many former supporters had already realized that it was a colossal mistake. Drawing on recently uncovered Massachusetts Department of Public Works archives and numerous other sources, Boston's Central Artery tells the story of the highway's construction and of the neighborhoods that it destroyed. The book is a vivid document of an era when roadways tore through the nation's downtown centers and displaced thousands of residents and businesses along the way. Written by an enginer-historian, Boston's Central Artery will appeal to not only those fascinated by the history of Boston but also those interested in urban history, architecture, and construction.
