Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to 1800, mission societies had been composed exclusively of men. Then, on October 9 of that year, Miss Mary Webb gathered together fourteen Baptist and Congregational women and organized the Boston Female Society for Missionary Purposes. It would consist of . . . females who are disposed to contribute their mite towards so noble a design as diffusion of gospel light among the shades of darkness and superstition"; dues were set at $2.00 annually. So began a movement which was to spread throughout Massachusetts and, eventually, the entire country. Initially, however, progress was slow. Male prejudice opposed even the practice of women meeting together for prayer and contributing funds to mission work. And even after the role of women as fund-raisers was generally accepted there remained the reluctance of church mission boards to give to women a share in policy and decision making. Eventually the women organized their own missionary sending societies; these groups were largely responsible for sending single women into the mission fields - another practice which had long been opposed by denominational boards. R. Pierce Beaver traces the development of this fascinating movement, paying attention not only to its broad outlines, but also to the individual pioneers who led the way.

Dr. Thomas provides a readable exposition of their theological ideas by keeping an extraordinary practicality. I recommend this work for both clergy and laity." --The Right Reverend Dr. Bill Atwood, Bishop, International Diocese, Anglican Church in North America "The range of doctrines Dr. Thomas deals with is important to all students of theology in their own intellectual preparation at seminaries. I concur with the author that theological task as primary concern of the church is extremely important to strengthen its spiritual vision in an increasingly secular society. I welcome this book." --Xavier Lakshmanan, PhD, Head of the Department of Theology & Ministry, Tabor College, NSW, Australia "Dr. Thomas has been a contributor to our journal, Mission Today. As its editor, I have always welcomed his theological writings. His capacity for reflecting creatively on theological issues that matter today is commendable. His scholarly contributions have enriched our journal. I support this new book." --Fr. Dr. Paul Vadakumpadan, SDB, Professor, Systematic Theology, Sacred Heard College, Shilong, India "In this collection of thoughtful, well-informed essays, Joe Thomas draws valuable insights from the work of a pleasingly broad range of well-known theologians. I recommend these very readable reflections to seminary students, and to anyone else interested in exploring theological responses to issues confronting the Church in the modern world." --Patricia Harrison, PhD, MDiv, ThM, MA, MSt, MEd St, Theological Educator, and Member Australian College of Educators

Book excerpt: Beginning with the premise that women's perceptions of manliness are crucial to its construction, Susan Walton focuses on the life and writings of Charlotte Yonge as a prism for understanding the formulation of masculinities in the Victorian period. Yonge was a prolific writer whose bestselling fiction and extensive journalism enjoyed a wide readership. Walton situates Yonge's work in the context of her family connections with the army, showing that an interlocking of worldly and spiritual warfare was fundamental to Yonge's outlook. For Yonge, all good Christians are soldiers, and Walton argues persuasively that the medievalised discourse of sanctified violence executed by upright moral men that is often connected with late nineteenth-century Imperialism began earlier in the century, and that Yonge's work was one major strand that gave it substance. Of significance, Yonge also endorsed missionary work, which she viewed as an extension of a father's duties in the neighborhood and which was closely allied to a vigorous promotion of refashioned Tory paternalism. Walton's study is rich in historical context, including Yonge's connections with the Tractarians, the effects of industrialization, and Britain's Imperial enterprises. Informed by extensive archival scholarship, Walton offers important insights into the contradictory messages about manhood current in the mid-nineteenth century through the works of a major but undervalued Victorian author.
