Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on the formulation of doctrine since World War II. In no comparable period in history have the dimensions of the battlefield been so altered by rapid technological changes. The need for the tactical doctrines of the Army to remain correspondingly abreast of these changes is thus more pressing than ever before. Future conflicts are not likely to develop in the leisurely fashions of the past where tactical doctrines could be refined on the battlefield itself. It is, therefore, imperative that we apprehend future problems with as much accuracy as possible. One means of doing so is to pay particular attention to the business of how the Army's doctrine has developed historically, with a view to improving methods of future development.

Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive study of the major changes in infantry tacticts from the time of Frederick the Great to the beginning of what many see as the era of modern war, in the 1860s. Ross lays social and political change side by side with technical change. He argues that the French revolution, due to the fervour and loyalty it inspired in its participants, led to huge citizen armies of devolved command which were able to make use of new tactics that swept the poorly paid and poorly treated professional armies of their enemies from the field. Shortly after the Napoleonic wars other European countries experienced similar social change and by the middle of the Nineteenth Century these massive conscript armies were equipped with breech-loading rifles and more powerful artillery. The battlefield of the late 1860's had become a place where close infantry formations could not survive for long in the linear formations of the past.

Book excerpt: With the advent of better weapons, the American army learned that massing tight lines of soldiers to attack dug-in defenders would not work as well as it had. Soldiers began to study the issue and develop new field tactics. In 1891 Fort Leavenworth published the first true tactical manual. Not until the advent of the field radio was the problem solved of communicating with troops spread much farther apart.

Book excerpt: THE LAND WARRIOR'S COMPREHENSIVE COMPANION The indispensable field manual for the Infantry Soldier, Special Forces operator, military contractor, or prepper. MAMMOTH 820+ pages! Updated and expanded - current edition. Full-size edition - LARGE 7" x 10" FORMAT: clear, detailed text & illustrations. Created and trusted by US military forces: United States Army Maneuver Center of Excellence (MCoE). Complete & Unabridged. IMPORTANT: this is not the older, outdated field manual (FM 3-21.8) with only 600 pages that is often offered for sale - or the even older FM 7-8 - this is the current, up-to-date ATP 3-21.8. Don't be fooled! "Batteries last hours, books last decades: get the print edition!" Infantry Soldiers have been the backbone of every army throughout history. Being the most fundamental and enduring of military occupations, the foot-soldier's art has been honed by centuries of warfighting around the world. These skills, therefore, should be studied not only by the Infantryman but by anyone who wishes to be well-prepared for potential combat, whatever their profession or specialty. With an incredible 820+ pages of tightly-written and profusely-illustrated material, this unique book provides the reader with a complete understanding of the strategy, tactics, techniques and tools of modern land warfare from the perspective of the small unit leader. "The primary mission of the Infantry platoon and squad is to close with the enemy by means of fire and maneuver to destroy, capture, or repel an assault by fire, close combat, and counterattack. In order to succeed, Infantry platoons and squads are aggressive, physically fit, disciplined, and well-trained. The inherent strategic mobility of Infantry units dictates a need to be prepared for rapid deployment in response to situations in different operational environments" - From the first chapter. Book excerpt: For decades, military historians have argued that the introduction of the rifle musket-with a range five times longer than that of the smoothbore musket-made the shoulder-to-shoulder formations of linear tactics obsolete. Author Earl J. Hess challenges this deeply entrenched assumption. He contends that long-range rifle fire did not dominate Civil War battlefields or dramatically alter the course of the conflict because soldiers had neither the training nor the desire to take advantage of the musket rifle's increased range. Drawing on the drill manuals available to officers and a close reading of battle reports, Civil War Infantry Tactics demonstrates that linear tactics provided the best formations and maneuvers to use with the single-shot musket, whether rifle or smoothbore. The linear system was far from an outdated relic that led to higher casualties and prolonged the war. Indeed, regimental officers on both sides of the conflict found the formations and maneuvers in use since the era of the French Revolution to be indispensable to the survival of their units on the battlefield. The training soldiers received in this system, combined with their extensive experience in combat, allowed small units a high level of articulation and effectiveness. Unlike much military history that focuses on grand strategies, Hess zeroes in on formations and maneuvers (or primary tactics), describing their purpose and usefulness in regimental case studies, and pinpointing which of them were favorites of unit commanders in the field. The Civil War was the last conflict in North America to see widespread use of the linear tactical system, and Hess convincingly argues that the war also saw the most effective tactical performance yet in America's short history.
