Book excerpt: Durability and field performances of urea formaldehyde foam insulation (UFFI) in Australian dwellings and the physical and chemical properties important to these performance have been investigated by a combination of field inspections and product sampling, a postal survey of building problems and occupant complaints, formaldehyde gas concentration measurements and laboratory assessment of product behaviour. Products gathered in the field exhibited large differences in physical and chemical properties and stability. Ill effects have been reported to Health Departments by occupants in 0.2% of installations and were typical of those known to result from exposure to formaldehyde gas, showed strong association to building occupancy and may have been associated with poorly formulated and unstable products. Laboratory assessment of commercial products showed that all products hydrolysed, lost strength and emitted more formaldehyde gas under high humidity conditions. However, only products with high acidity exhibited dimensional instability, some exhibiting linear shrinkage of more than 30% after only short periods of exposure to high humidity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A postal survey has been carried out on complaints of building and health problems suspected to be associated with the use of urea formaldehyde foam insulation (UFFI) in Australian dwellings. Many of the suspected building problems have not been realised in the 4 to 8 year installation period covered by the survey. The main problems to arise have been electrical short circuits caused by fresh (wet) foam, occurrence of odours, and product degradation. Complaints of ill health have been reported in a small percentage of installations and do not appear to be associated with use in specific building spaces, climatic factors, or occupant susceptibility to certain ill effects. However, a possible association may exist with (poor) foam formulation and production and long-term product instability. Formaldehyde gas concentrations in dwellings several months after UFFI has been installed are generally less than 0.1 ppm. It is recommended that Standards for UFFI must include suitable test methods and specifications to control foam production and to ensure product stability.

The substances considered in this review, i.e. benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, naphthalene, nitrogen dioxide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (especially benzo[a]pyrene), radon, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, have indoor sources, are known in respect of their hazardousness to health and are often found indoors in concentrations of health concern. The guidelines are targeted at public health professionals involved in preventing health risks of environmental exposures, as well as specialists and authorities involved in the design and use of buildings, indoor materials and products. They provide a scientific basis for legally enforceable standards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all homes, apartments, and commercial buildings will experience leaks, flooding, or other forms of excessive indoor dampness at some point. Not only is excessive dampness a health problem by itself, it also contributes to several other potentially problematic types of situations. Molds and other microbial agents favor damp indoor environments, and excess moisture may initiate the release of chemical emissions from damaged building materials and furnishings. This new book from the Institute of Medicine examines the health impact of exposures resulting from damp indoor environments and offers recommendations for public health interventions. Damp Indoor Spaces and Health covers a broad range of topics. The book not only examines the relationship between damp or moldy indoor environments and adverse health outcomes but also discusses how and where buildings get wet, how dampness influences microbial growth and chemical emissions, ways to prevent and remediate dampness, and elements of a public health response to the issues. A comprehensive literature review finds sufficient evidence of an association between damp indoor environments and some upper respiratory tract symptoms, coughing, wheezing, and asthma symptoms in sensitized persons. This important book will be of interest to a wide-ranging audience of science, health, engineering, and building professionals, government officials, and members of the public.

Book excerpt: This book describes a new structural system in wood that represents the first significant challenge to concrete and steel structures since their inception in tall building design more than a century ago. The introduction of these ideas is driven by the need to find safe, carbon-neutral and sustainable alternatives to the incumbent structural materials of the urban world. The potential market for these ideas is quite simply enormous. The proposed solutions have the potential to revolutionize the building industry, address the major challenges of climate change, urbanization, and sustainable development and to significantly contribute to world housing needs.
