Michael Hohn in his presentation, Geostatistics and Petroleum Geology, nicely compliments the other books in the series and brings to the readers some new techniques by which to analyze their data. New approaches always result in new ideas or enhancement of old ones. The French School of Geostatistiques (Fontainebleau, France) was founded and developed by Georges Matheron in response to problems in mining explo ration and exploitation. This approach has been used successfully in that industry since the mid-1960s, but only recently applied to similar problems in petroleum. Likewise, these applications have been successful in this applied field as well and here Hohn gives examples. Standard subjects of the field of geostatistics are explored and discussed-the semivariogram, kriging, cokriging, nonlinear and parametric estimation, and conditional simulation. These may be unrecognizable terms to the readers now, but upon completion of reading the book, they will be fimiliar ones. Each subject is discussed in detail with appropriate and pertinent case studies, taken from the author's own research or from the literature. The author notes the book is for working geologists in the petroleum industry.

Collections of case histories, casebooks, are now widely used in all sorts of specialties other than in their familiar application to law and medicine. The case method had its formal beginning at Harvard in 1871 when Christopher Lagdell developed it as a means of teaching. It was so successful in teaching law that it was soon adopted in medical education, and the col lection of cases provided the raw material for research on various diseases. Subsequently, the case history approach spread to such varied fields as busi ness, psychology, management, and economics, and there are over 100 books in print that use this approach. The idea for a series of Casebooks in Earth Sciences grew from my ex perience in organizing and editing a collection of examples of one variety of sedimentary deposits. The project began as an effort to bring some order to a large number of descriptions of these deposits that were so varied in pre sentation and terminology that even specialists found them difficult to compare and analyze. Thus, from the beginning, it was evident that something more than a simple collection of papers was needed. Book excerpt: This book discusses how sediments compact with depth and applications of the compaction trends. Porosity reduction in sediment conveniently indicates the degree of sediments compacted after deposition. Published empirical curves- the compaction curves- are depth-wise porosity variation through which change in pore spaces from sediment surface to deeper depths e.g. up to 6 km can be delineated. Porosity is derived from well logs. Compaction curves, referred to as the Normal Porosity Profile of shales, sandstones and shale bearing sandstones of different models are reviewed along with the different mechanical and chemical compaction processes. These compaction models reveals how porosity reduces depth-wise and the probable reason for anomalous zones. Deviation from these normal compaction trends may indicate abnormal pressure scenarios: either over- or under pressure. We highlight global examples of abnormal pressure scenarios along with the different primary- and secondary mechanisms. Well logs and cores being the direct measurements of porosity, well log is the only cost-effective way to determine porosity of subsurface rocks. Certain well logs can detect overpressure and the preference of one log above the other helps reduce the uncertainty. Apart from delineation of under-compacted zones by comparing the modeled- with the actual compaction, porosity data can also estimate erosion.
