Book Synopsis Family-group Names of Recent Fishes by : Richard Van Der Laan
Download or read book Family-group Names of Recent Fishes written by Richard Van Der Laan and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family-group names of animals (superfamily, family, subfamily, supertribe, tribe and subtribe) are regulated by the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Family names are particularly important because they are among the most widely used of all technical animal names. Apart from using the correct family-group name according to the Code, it is also important to use one unique universal name (with a fixed spelling) to avoid confusion. We have compiled a list of familygroup names for Recent fishes, applied the rules of the Code and, if possible, tried to conserve the names in prevailing recent practice. We list all of the family-group names found to date for Recent fishes (N=2625), together with their author(s) and year of publication. This list can be used in assigning the correct family-group name to a genus or a group of genera. With this publication we contribute to the usage of correct, universal family-group names in the classification of, and for communication about, Recent fishes.
Book Synopsis Speciation and Biogeography of Birds by : Ian Newton
Download or read book Speciation and Biogeography of Birds written by Ian Newton and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2003-06-03 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book should be of value to anyone interested in bird evolution and taxonomy, biogeography, distributional history, dispersal and migration patterns. It provides an up-to-date synthesis of current knowledge on species formation, and the factors influencing current distribution patterns. It draws heavily on new information on Earth history, including past glacial and other climatic changes, on new developments in molecular biology and palaeontology, and on recent studies of bird distribution and migration patterns, to produce a coherent account of the factors that have influenced bird species diversity and distribution patterns worldwide. Received the Best Bird Book of the Year award for 2004 from British Birds magazine. * Winner of the British Birds/British Trust for Ornithology, Bird Book of the Year 2004! * The first book to deal comprehensively with bird speciation and biogeography * Up-to-date synthesis of new information * Clearly written * No previous book covers the same ground * Many maps and diagrams * Makes difficult and widely scattered information accessible and easily understood * A sound base for future research * Takes full account of recent developments in molecular biology
Book Synopsis Shark Research by : Jeffrey C Carrier
Download or read book Shark Research written by Jeffrey C Carrier and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, the study of shark biology has benefited from the development, refinement, and rapid expansion of novel techniques and advances in technology. These have given new insight into the fields of shark genetics, feeding, foraging, bioenergetics, imaging, age and growth, movement, migration, habitat preference, and habitat use. This pioneering book, written by experts in shark biology, examines technologies such as autonomous vehicle tracking, underwater video approaches, molecular genetics techniques, and accelerometry, among many others. Each detailed chapter offers new insights and promises for future studies of elasmobranch biology, provides an overview of appropriate uses of each technique, and can be readily extended to other aquatic fish and marine mammals and reptiles. Including chapter authors who were pioneers in developing some of the technologies discussed in the book, this book serves as the first single-source reference with in-depth coverage of techniques appropriate for the laboratory and field study of sharks, skates, and rays. It concludes with a unique section on Citizen Science and its application to studies of shark biology. This is a must-read for any marine biologist or scientist working in the field of shark biology, as well as marine biology students and graduates.
Download or read book Sharks written by Angelo Mojetta and published by White Star Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind most myths of the sea, behind most people's sense of fear and respect for the ocean, lurks the shark—the uncontested lord of the deep. Each year scientists try to counter the bad publicity that sharks receive during beach season, and now there is a growing general sense that these fish lead interesting lives beyond what their monstrous reputations would suggest. This guidebook is both a portable encyclopedia and a visually rich tribute to the shark. Complete with color photographs, drawings, graphics, and a series of species data cards, this volume presents the shark's history and biology in a thorough and un-intimidating way. Represented by over 350 known species and by others yet to be discovered, sharks are the result of an evolutionary process that began about 250 million years ago. This guide helps us to appreciate them as highly specialized ocean predators that combine primitive character traits with behavior typical of superior vertebrates. Covering everything from the legends surrounding sharks, to their fascinating evolution, to their anatomy and variety, to their different types of behavior, Sharks will be enjoyed by anyone wishing to understand more about this "favorite fish to fear."
