Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the potential problems that can obscure any scientific enterprise, inconsistent results across studies are bound to occur. How are we to decide what is true? Let's turn to philosophy for a reasonable answer. The mathematician-philosopher Bertrand Russell approached a similar problem in his monograph The Problems of Philosophy (Russell B, 1912). He addressed the following question: How do we know that anything is "real"? Is the only reality subjective and simply in our minds, as Bishop Berkley challenged, or can we mostly believe the objective reality? His pragmatic answer: All possibilities may be true, but when the preponderance of evidence indicates that objective reality and knowledge are the most probable case, go with it. If the preponderance of all evidence about the clinical description of fibromyalgia and it's pathogenic mechanisms and treatment strategies indicate a highly probable interrelated hypothesis, go with it. The direction of the literature on the whole trumps the less likely tangents. At the same time, remember Bertrand Russell and his pragmatic answer, and keep an open mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fibromyalgia syndrome is a common and chronic disorder characterised by widespread muscle pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points. The word fibromyalgia comes from the Latin term for fibrous tissue (fibro) and the Greek ones for muscle (myo) and pain (algia). Tender points are specific places on the body -- on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, and upper and lower extremities -- where people with fibromyalgia feel pain in response to slight pressure. Although fibromyalgia is often considered an arthritis-related condition, it is not truly a form of arthritis (a disease of the joints) because it does not cause inflammation or damage to the joints, muscles, or other tissues. Like arthritis, however, fibromyalgia can cause significant pain and fatigue, and it can interfere with a person's ability to carry on daily activities. Also like arthritis, fibromyalgia is considered a rheumatic condition. This new book presents the latest research in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year, six million Americans--most of them women--will go to their doctors, complaining of an illness they have no name for. The majority will be turned away or treated for depression; the few who persist will go to an average of four doctors before they receive the correct diagnosis: fibromyalgia. In their earlier Making Sense of Fibromyalgia, noted medical writer Janice Wallace and Dr. Daniel Wallace, a leading expert on this disorder, provided a comprehensive guide--for both patients and professionals--to this little known and poorly understood syndrome. Now, in All About Fibromyalgia, the Wallaces provide a thoroughly revised and updated version of that highly successful volume, incorporating a wealth of new information. This edition provides the current understanding of the disease as well as the latest drug treatments--all laid out in clear and accessible language. As in the previous volume, the authors provide a detailed, yet clear explanation of the disease. Fibromyalgia, they explain, is a form of chronic neuromuscular pain, a pain-amplification syndrome brought on by abnormal interactions between hormones, the immune system, neurotransmitters, and the autonomic nervous system. Sometimes the syndrome occurs spontaneously; in most cases, the authors write, it is associated with trauma, stress, such conditions as lupus and hypothyroidism, and over forty microbes, from hepatitis to Epstein-Barr to Lyme disease. Drawing on actual cases to illustrate their points, the authors help break through the isolation that patients often feel when doctors misdiagnose or simply ignore their symptoms. All About Fibromyalgia addresses a desperate need for information on this disease and offers reassurance to patients and their families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an interesting survey amongst doctors, fibromyalgia was considered the least prestigious disease. Although this survey was done in a Scandinavian country and was done more than 13 years ago, the grim situation is still the same today all over the world. Patients suffering with fibromyalgia feel that they are not believed and they are not listened to. Despite knowledge being gathered on this disease for a few centuries, and having definite diagnostic criteria and management pathways, the healthcare system still fails many patients who are left without a diagnosis or treatment plan. Fibromyalgia is a disease that causes widespread pain in many areas of the body and has significant accompanying symptoms like fatigue, waking unrefreshed and cognitive symptoms. Fibromyalgia affects patients as a whole including their cognitive performance, physical skills, psychological status, ability to work and social life. It can present as a part of the spectrum of functional pain syndromes, often accompanied by other systemic conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, headaches and chronic fatigue. It is estimated that 1 in 20 can suffer with this debilitating condition. This ground-breaking textbook covers the condition in great detail and is written in an easy-to-understand style that is of great use to Doctors, nurses, medical students, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals. Patients who suffer from fibromyalgia also find it useful to understand their medical condition; the book helps to direct them to specific treatment strategies, explaining the benefit and risk in detail. As this is a common chronic pain presentation, it is of immense use to candidates preparing for examinations conducted by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, UK (FRCA), Faculty of Pain Medicine, UK (FFPMRCA), American Board of Anesthesiology (AB), College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland (FCAI), European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (EDAIC), Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZA), World Institute of Pain (FIPP/CIPS), Canadian Board exams, National Board of Examinations of India (Dip NB) and other competitive exams across the globe.
