Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Festivals, Holy Days, and Saints' Days: A Study in Origins and Survivals in Church Ceremonies Secular Customs The idea of this little book is not to dogmatize, but rather to note practices still existing, or but lately obsolete, to trace their probable connexion With those of the Middle Ages, and Where a pre Christian connexion can be traced, to mention it With due reserve. In some cases, bygone ceremonies Will be de scribed for the sake of the light they throw on many still surviving amongst us. English ceremonies will be first regarded, and then such Continental or Eastern rites as can be compared With those of the English people, indicating a similar origin. The endeavour will be to select those Which deserve note by their typical character, but not to attempt to cover such a huge field as the description of the Catholic ceremonies in all countries must necessarily involve. A little repetition may sometimes occur, and when this is so, it will be for the sake of com parison with other usages. Festivals can probably be traced to the feelings of joy and thankfulness common to mankind, when the great processes of Nature come in their annual, yet to the primitive mind, uncertain courses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honoring relatives by tending graves, building altars, and cooking festive meals has been an honored tradition among Latin Americans for centuries. The tribute, "el Dia de los Muertos," has enjoyed renewed popularity since the 1970s when Latino activists and artists in the United States began expanding "Day of the Dead" north of the border with celebrations of performance art, Aztec danza, art exhibits, and other public expressions. Focusing on the power of ritual to serve as a communication medium, Regina M. Marchi combines a mix of ethnography, historical research, oral history, and critical cultural analysis to explore the manifold and unexpected transformations that occur when the tradition is embraced by the mainstream. A testament to the complex nature of ethnic identity, Day of the Dead in the USA provides insight into the power of ritual to create community, transmit oppositional messages, and advance educational, political, and economic goals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 20 years ago Michael Brocken created from his doctoral research, what became both a seminal and contested volume concerning the social mores surrounding the British Folk Revival up to that point in time: The British Folk Revival 1944–2002. In this long-overdue second edition he revisits not only his own research, but also that of others from the 1990s and early 21st century. He then considers how a discourse of folkloric authenticity emerged in the closing years of the 19th century and how a worrying nationalistic immanence came to surround folk music and dance during the inter-war years. Brocken also proposes that the media: records, radio and TV in post-WWII folk revivalism can offer us important insights into how self-directed learning of the folk guitar emerged. Brocken moves on to consider the business structures of the contemporary folk scene and how relationships are formed between contemporary folk business and the digital and social media spheres. In his penultimate chapter he discusses the masculinisation of folk traditions and asks important questions about how our folk traditions are carried and are authorised. In the final chapter he also considers the rise of an exciting new folk live music built environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If, as David Guss argues, culture is a contested terrain with constantly changing contours, then festivals are its battlegrounds, where people come to fight and dispute in large acts of public display. Festive behavior, long seen by anthropologists and folklorists as the "uniform expression of a collective consciousness, is contentious and often subversive," and The Festive State is an eye-opening guide to its workings. Guss investigates "the ideology of tradition," combining four case studies in a radical multisite ethnography to demonstrate how in each instance concepts of race, ethnicity, history, gender, and nationhood are challenged and redefined. In a narrative as colorful as the events themselves, Guss presents the Afro-Venezuelan celebration of San Juan, the "neo-Indian" Day of the Monkey, the mestizo ritual of Tamunangue, and the cultural policies and products of a British multinational tobacco corporation. All these illustrate the remarkable fluidity of festive behavior as well as its importance in articulating different cultural interests.

Providing a worldwide perspective on celebration, entries on topics such as Dim Sum, La Quinceanera Parties, Deepavali, and Juneteenth cover many cultures. In addition, entries on Ancient Rome, Medieval entertaining, and others give an inside view as to what entertaining was like during those times, should readers want to recreate these themes for school projects or club banquets. Whether a student of history or world language class, or an adult planning a theme party, there is something in Entertaining from Ancient Rome to the Super Bowl for everyone.
