We first find the T-matrix interaction parameters in pure 3He and 3He- 4He mixture films by fitting the zero-polarization experimental data of specific heat and spin susceptibility. We can then use these T -matrix interaction parameters to evaluate the Landau parameters in 2D Fermi liquid films at arbitrary polarization. We then evaluate the thermodynamic quantities, i.e. the effective masses, specific heat, spin susceptibility, compressibility, and normal sound speed, at arbitrary polarization. We develope a method to find exact numerical solutions to the Landau kinetic equation(KE) for the speed of zero sound in a 2D Fermi liquid, and calculate its dependence on film density and polarization. We further calculate, both analytically and numerically, the speed and attenuation of the collective excitations in a 2D Fermi liquid within the relaxation time approximation. We derive the analytic expressions for the quasiparticle lifetime at arbitrary polarization, and discuss its polarization dependence. We study the transition from normal sound to zero sound as the temperature is lowered in thin 3He films. Finallywe compare an alternative method to solve the Landau KE for collective exciatations in 2D Fermi liquid with the standard method introduced by Khalatnikov and Abrikosov(AK), and point out some of its advantages compared with the AK method.

Book excerpt: The condensed phases of helium three provide an exciting laboratory for many fundamental questions in condensed matter physics. Due to its light mass and weak interatomic potential, the condensed phases of helium display quantum effects more dramatically than any other atomic system. Intuitionbased on classical experience is often misleading in these phases: the solid phase for instance is less ordered at low temperature than the liquid phase. The present book is unique in covering all the low temperature properties of helium three as liquid, superfluid, and solid. It provides anintroduction to the extensive literature on helium three from the point of view of an experimentalist, and includes the analogy of its properties with the cosmological 'big bang'. Graduate students, researchers, and professionals in condensed matter physics and low temperature physics will findthis the standard reference work for the decade to come.

Book excerpt: The present volume contains the texts of the invited talks delivered at the Sev enth International Conference on Recent Progress in Many-Body Theories held at the University of Minnesota during the period August 26-31, 1991. The proceedings of the Fourth Conference (Oulu, Finland, 1987) and Fifth Conference (Arad, Israel, 1989) have been published by Plenum as the first two volumes of this series. Papers from the First Conference (Trieste, 1978) comprise Nuclear Physics volume A328, Nos. 1, 2. The Second Conference (Oaxtepec, Mexico, 1989) was published by Springer-Verlag as volume 142 of "Lecture Notes in Physics," entitled "Recent Progress in Many Body Theories." Volume 198 of the same series contains the papers from the Third Conference (Altenberg, Germany, 1983). These volumes are intended to cover a broad spectrum of current research topics in physics that benefit from the application of many-body theories for their elucidation. At the same time there is a focus on the development and refinement of many-body methods. One of the major aims of the conference series has been to foster the ex change of ideas among physicists working in such diverse areas as nucleon-nucleon in teractions, nuclear physics, astronomy, atomic and molecular physics, quantum chem istry, quantum fluids, and condensed matter physics. The present volume contains contributions from all of these areas.

Book excerpt: The spin-dynamics of Fermi-liquid helium-3 in pure form and in itsmixtures with helium-4 are considered in this thesis. A linearisedmodel of the spin dynamics is developed from Leggett s equation ofmotion, including spin-diffusion, the Leggett-Rice spin-rotationeffect and cylindrical boundary conditions . The equations aresolved using a matrix formalism, allowing simulation of FIDs, NMRspectra and spin-echoes. The boundary conditions are shown tocause deviations of spin-echo amplitude and phase from thepredictions of Leggett and Rice, for realistic experiments. Themodel is extended to include the demagnetising field (dipolarfield) due to the magnetisation of the sample itself. Simulationsshow that, when the demagnetising field is strong, spectralclustering is present and sharp peaks are observed in the NMRspectrum. Data from NMR experiments on 3He and 3He-4He mixtures inan 11.3T magnetic field, performed in Nottingham in 1999/2000, areanalysed. The analysis of 6.2% 3He mixture is predominantly byleast-squares fitting of the model (excluding demagnetising field)to spin-echo data, yielding the transverse spin-diffusioncoefficient and spin-rotation parameter as functions oftemperature down to 3.4mK. Parameters are seen to deviate from the1/Ta 2 characteristic of Fermi-liquid transport parameters, witha 1/(T 2+Ta 2) form, indicative of spin-transport anisotropy. The anisotropy temperature scale Ta is found to be 6+-1 mK. Analysis of pure 3He experiments is by qualitative comparisonof spectroscopic data with the model (including demagnetisingfield): many observed features are reproduced by the simulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concisely presents the latest trends in the physics of superconductivity and superfluidity and magnetism in novel systems, as well as the problem of BCS-BEC crossover in ultracold quantum gases and high-Tc superconductors. It further illuminates the intensive exchange of ideas between these closely related fields of condensed matter physics over the last 30 years of their dynamic development. The content is based on the author’s original findings obtained at the Kapitza Institute, as well as advanced lecture courses he held at the Moscow Engineering Physical Institute, Amsterdam University, Loughborough University and LPTMS Orsay between 1994 and 2011. In addition to the findings of his group, the author discusses the most recent concepts in these fields, obtained both in Russia and in the West. The book consists of 16 chapters which are divided into four parts. The first part describes recent developments in superfluid hydrodynamics of quantum fluids and solids, including the fashionable subject of possible supersolidity in quantum crystals of 4He, while the second describes BCS-BEC crossover in quantum Fermi-Bose gases and mixtures, as well as in the underdoped states of cuprates. The third part is devoted to non-phonon mechanisms of superconductivity in unconventional (anomalous) superconductors, including some important aspects of the theory of high-Tc superconductivity. |The last part considers the anomalous normal state of novel superconductive materials and materials with colossal magnetoresistance (CMR). The book offers a valuable guide for senior-level undergraduate students and graduate students, postdoctoral and other researchers specializing in solid-state and low-temperature physics.

Book excerpt: This essential offers a compact introduction to the theory of Fermi-liquids for physics students in their main studies. It forms the basis for an understanding of theoretical solid state physics and is part of every introductory lecture on this topic. After a brief overview of the Sommerfeld model of metals, the concept of the quasiparticle is introduced. Important properties characterizing a Fermi liquid are derived in detailed calculations. The essential concludes with an overview of the microscopic theory of a Fermi-liquid. This Springer essential is a translation of the original German 1st edition essentials, Theorie der Fermiflüssigkeit in Metallen by Michael Kinza, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2018. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unconventional superconductivity (or superconductivity with a nontrivial Cooper pairing) is believed to exist in many heavy-fermion materials as well as in high temperature superconductors, and is a subject of great theoretical and experimental interest. The remarkable progress achieved in this field has not been reflected in published monographs and textbooks, and there is a gap between current research and the standard education of solid state physicists in the theory of superconductivity. This book is intended to meet this information need and includes the authors' original results.
