Book Synopsis Everyday Media Culture in Africa by : Wendy Willems
Download or read book Everyday Media Culture in Africa written by Wendy Willems and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African audiences and users are rapidly gaining in importance and increasingly targeted by global media companies, social media platforms and mobile phone operators. This is the first edited volume that addresses the everyday lived experiences of Africans in their interaction with different kinds of media: old and new, state and private, elite and popular, global and national, material and virtual. So far, the bulk of academic research on media and communication in Africa has studied media through the lens of media-state relations, thereby adopting liberal democracy as the normative ideal and examining the potential contribution of African media to development and democratization. Focusing instead on everyday media culture in a range of African countries, this volume contributes to the broader project of provincializing and decolonizing audience and internet studies.

Volume One of this landmark series on African cinema draws together foundational scholarship on its history and evolution. Beginning with the ideological project of colonial film to legitimize the economic exploitation and cultural hegemony of the African continent during imperial rule to its counter-historical formation and theorization. It comprises essays by film scholars and filmmakers alike, among them Roy Armes, Med Hondo, Fèrid Boughedir, Haile Gerima, Oliver Barlet, Teshome Gabriel, and David Murphy, including three distinct dossiers: a timeline of key dates in the history of African cinema; a comprehensive chronicle and account of the contributions by African women in cinema; and a homage and overview of Ousmane Sembène, the "Father" of African cinema.
Book Synopsis Elections and the Media in Post-Conflict Africa by : Marie-Soleil Frere
Download or read book Elections and the Media in Post-Conflict Africa written by Marie-Soleil Frere and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past ten years, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Chad, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo and Rwanda all organized pluralist elections in a post conflict context, having experienced an armed conflict which either interrupted or prevented democratization processes. These polls were organized with the support of the international community, which viewed them as a crucial step in the peace-building process. The local media's role throughout was supposed to be to ensure that an electoral process is actually 'free and fair' - a role that becomes even more crucial in countries where the media have previously being perceived as warmongers or peace-builders in the conflicts. Giving a voice to African journalists and analysing the work they have been publishing or broadcasting during these elections, African media specialist Marie-Soleil Frere explores if and how the local media fulfilled their duties. In doing so, the book reveals journalists' professional challenges at a time when much is expected from the media, as well as the intense political pressure faced that can make their work particularly difficult. Insightful and comprehensive, Elections and the Media in Post-Conflict Africa underlines both the importance and the fragility of the role of the media in a democratic system.

Book Synopsis Shifting Perceptions of Migration in Senegalese Literature, Film, and Social Media by : Mahriana Rofheart
Download or read book Shifting Perceptions of Migration in Senegalese Literature, Film, and Social Media written by Mahriana Rofheart and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Shifting Perceptions of Migration in Senegalese Literature, Film, and Social Media, MahrianaRofheart proposes a revised understanding of Senegalese migration narratives by asserting the importance of both local and global connections in recent novels, hip-hop songs, and documentary videos. Much previous research on migration narratives in French from Africa has suggested that contemporary authors often do not consider their countries of origin upon departure and instead focus on life abroad or favor a global perspective. Rofheart instead demonstrates that today’s Senegalese novelists and hip-hop artists, whether living in France or Senegal, express connections to communities both in Senegal and abroad to cope with the traumatic experience of emigration and return. Ultimately, Rofheart asserts that Senegalese national identity remains significant to the way these authors and artists respond to migration. In her examination of novels in French, hip-hop songs in French and Wolof, and online documentaries, as well as the social and economic currents that influence the texts’ production and circulation, Rofheart engages with scholarship on transnationalism, postcolonialism, popular culture, and new media studies. The study’s initial chapters address well-known works from the mid-twentieth century, including Cheikh Hamidou Kane’s Ambiguous Adventure, as well as the films of Ousmane Sembène, and Djibril Diop Mambéty. This bookthen demonstrates how novelists such as Aminata Sow Fall and Fatou Diome, as well as hip-hop artists including Simon and Awadi, break with previous tragic depictions of migration in novels and films to present successful responses to the contemporary context of frequent emigration from Senegal.
Book Synopsis Collective Mobilisations in Africa / Mobilisations collectives en Afrique by :
Download or read book Collective Mobilisations in Africa / Mobilisations collectives en Afrique written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses empirical research to bring together a broad range of protest contexts in twelve chapters. From the formation of Maroon societies in the early colonial period, to female mobilisation in authoritarian contexts, via urban youth culture, women or mineworkers in trade unionism, as well as pro- and anti- gay rights activists, the protagonists here all insist upon their rights to protest in a variety of ways. Sometimes popular protest is expressed through religion, often (and sometimes violently) by young people, exasperated by their long wait for social achievement. Electoral wars and the formation of militias reveal a geography of violence in urban areas, which, in some sectarian excesses, can be displaced to rural areas, as described in the study on Boko Haram. Book Synopsis Femmes, Sport et Médiatisation en Europe/Women, Sport and Media Coverage in Europe by :
Download or read book Femmes, Sport et Médiatisation en Europe/Women, Sport and Media Coverage in Europe written by and published by Think tank Sport et citoyenneté. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. About 37% of European women admit they do not practise a sport at least once a week. It is very close to the men's percentage (43%), however, only 7% of broadcasted sport event on TV concern female competitions. This draws attention to and illustrates the general lack of media coverage of women's sport. This is why, in 2010, Sport and Citizenship decided to gather a panel of European experts on the media coverage of women's sport. This book is thus the outcome of three years of exchanges and brainstorming. It provides avenues for reflection aiming to improve women's sport exposure. Among them, it seems that adding more female competitions to the list of major sport events would be particularly pertinent. Indeed, this action would foster free-to-air broadcasting of women's sport and inspire the new generations

Book Synopsis Politics and Journalism in Francophone Africa by : Marie-Soleil Frère
Download or read book Politics and Journalism in Francophone Africa written by Marie-Soleil Frère and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive approach of the media, journalism and politics in Sub-Saharan Francophone Africa. The author argues that there are common features that the media and journalism share in the seventeen countries of Francophone Africa and these make the local media systems different from what they are in neighboring English-speaking African countries, and in the rest of the world. The approach of the media in French-speaking Africa has not only to be “de-Westernized”, but also to step out of general overviews considering “African media." This project shows the historical, political, economic and sociological characteristics of the media systems of seventeen French-speaking countries of Africa.
