Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States female crime has grown at a faster rate than male crime over the past couple of decades. Despite this, only limited research has been done by criminologists, psychologists and sociologists on this growing problem. This study examines female criminals; who they are, where they come from, what crimes they commit, why they commit criminal and delinquent acts, and how they are incarcerated. Part One discusses the extent and nature of female crime in the United States, and compares it to male crime. Part Two looks at early theories on the topic. Part Three explores the criminality and deviance of women offenders, while Part Four concentrates on the crimes and delinquency of juveniles. The work concludes with a discussion of female offenders in the custody of correctional authorities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few empirical studies have focused on women in prison. In the last few years, though, a number of studies have demonstrated that there are fundamental differences between male and female prisoners in an ever-changing penal system. Consequently, there has been a need for more comprehensive studies of female offenders for three primary reasons: (1) imperative research gaps remain to be bridged; (2) the female prison experience is not constant; and (3) prison rates for female offenders, especially minority offenders, have increased considerably in the last few years. A central goal of this book, then, is to provide a balance to the existing literature and research on female prisoners in the United States and, to an extent, abroad, focusing primarily on female offenders and using data gathered from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. The book utilizes a comprehensive investigative approach by equating the experience of female offenders by the totality of circumstances within an historical, institutional, political, and ideological context. The critical objective is to offer an inclusive analysis of the things that are considered by female inmates to be the most significant before, during, and after their incarceration, as a way of better understanding the reasons that lead to their first incarceration as well as subsequent incarcerations. By reading this book, the reader will have a greater understanding of the many challenges facing female inmates, as well as the relationship between inmates, correctional officers and, by extension, society in general. Also provided is a series of policy recommendations throughout the book, particularly in the concluding chapter and epilogue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States alone, millions of men, women and children use drugs, alcohol, or both. Drugs and alcohol are closely related to poor school performance, poor health, work-related stresses, crime and delinquency. Drugs and alcohol have been shown to be prominent factors in exposure to HIV infection--whether through intravenous drug use or unprotected, high-risk sexual relations. Regardless of all the known hazards, the incidence of drug and alcohol use continues to rise in the United States. This book reveals the nature and magnitude of drug and alcohol use in American society, and public opinion on drugs, alcohol, and substance abuse. It examines the illicit drug trade, the war on drugs, and law enforcement. The connection between substance abuse and criminality is addressed, with special studies on prisoners, teenagers, minorities, women, and college campuses. Accompanied by numerous tables and figures.

Less evident, however, is how gender differences shape those policies, and how gender identity and roles shape women's adaptation and resistance to prison culture and control. The papers in this collection explore how the gender-based attitudes that women bring to prison frame how they respond to the prison environment -- and how gender stereotypes continue to affect the treatment and opportunities of incarcerated women today. It looks particularly at how the personal and social problems imported into the prison setting become part of the intricate web of prison culture and how extensively women's prison experience reflects the control and domination they experienced in the outside world.

The problem is particularly acute in the lower socioeconomic sectors of the population, including teen runaways, drug addicts, and victims of abuse. This survey focuses first on defining prostitution and then on the motivations of those who became prostitutes. In Part II the overall scope of the problem is examined, along with the various subcultures (e.g., street walkers and call girls) and the prevalence of drugs, crime and victimization. Part III covers teenage prostitution and the issues of child sexual abuse. Part IV details other dimensions of the sex trade industry, such as pornography, male prostitutes, customers, laws, and the effects of decriminalization and legalization. Female prostitution outside the United States is discussed in Part V.

Book excerpt: The known or suspected dimensions of officially acted-upon involvement of women and girls in crime and delinquency should be reviewed, in order to sense whether the available information offers guidelines for a realistic policy in handling the female offender throughout the length and breadth of the legal and correctional process. The outstanding research studies on the female offender, although extremely scarce, should also be reviewed to see whether they contain any guidelines for policy. In developing a rationale for effective, justifiable handling of the officially acted-upon female offender, it is important to develop a totally integrated policy all the way along the line of the leg-correction procedures from arrest to parole, which policy is just not concentrated on the terminal phases of these procedures, such as probation, institutionalization, and release.

Book excerpt: This book is a welcome addition to the literature on women and criminality. It should be of particular interest to the general reader as a concise, well-organized and clearly written review of important aspects of this social problem. It would be excellent as a supplementary text in criminal justice, criminology, victimology, and women's studies courses. In addition to a selected bibliography, scholars will appreciate the excellent bibliographical essay which provides a basis for further research. Criminal Justice Policy Review The study of women in relation to crime and the justice system remains neglected by most criminologists and justice officials--until now. This remarkable volume breaks new ground by presenting a three-part examination of women as victims of crime, as criminals, and as professionals working in criminal justice. Within this scope, the author offers significant perspectives through empirical studies, as well as experts in the fields of criminology and criminal justice. The multi-faceted roles of women with respect to crime and the justice system are explored individually and collectively, as well as in relation to the roles of men. The significance of the historical treatment of women is also examined, in addition to the women's movement, the rise in women's crime and victimization, theoretical and statistical approaches, and prominent literature in the field. In addition, pertinent social and legal questions for the future are addressed.
