Book Synopsis Space Mankind's Fourth Environment by : L. G. Napolitano
Download or read book Space Mankind's Fourth Environment written by L. G. Napolitano and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space: Mankind's Fourth Environment focuses on the emerging trends in astronomy, taking into consideration space transportation and exploration. Along with this topic are various technological developments that are widely used and considered with space, referred to in this book as humankind's ""fourth environment"", as another potential destination of man. Divided into four parts, the book points at different challenges and problems related to the consideration of space as another environment for humankind, which is observed in the manned space flight programs of the United States and Russia. The book gives emphasis on the improvement of space technology, particularly the use of satellites in communication, emphasizing the use of Intelsat 5 and European L-sat in broadcast system. Studies on active and passive microwave sensors are discussed and a discussion on the medical results of a manned space flight is also presented. The book will surely boost the interest of astronomers and those interested in space technology and exploration.

Book Synopsis Applications of Ground-based Remote Sensing Techniques by : Donald R. Fitzgerald
Download or read book Applications of Ground-based Remote Sensing Techniques written by Donald R. Fitzgerald and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of selected techniques for the remote measurement of winds, shear, turbulence, aerosols, and temperature and moisture profiles has been outlined in some detail. Emphasis has been placed on techniques that may provide high-resolution data in the vicinity of airbases. A representative and fairly extensive list of references to the evolution of the various techniques has been prepared. The FM-CW radar and CO2 pulse Doppler laser have been identified as valuable for low-level wind and shear measurements. Strong downdraft conditions may be identified through use of infrared thermal anomaly detectors. Temperature and moisture profiles may be obtained through a combination of active sounding for profile inflection points and thermal or microwave multichannel radiometry.

Book Synopsis Clouds Their Formation, Optical Properties, And Effects by : Peter Hobbs
Download or read book Clouds Their Formation, Optical Properties, And Effects written by Peter Hobbs and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clouds: Their Formation, Optical Properties, and Effects deals with the formation of clouds as well as the theoretical and experimental aspects of their microphysical and optical properties. Discussions are grouped under the headings of structure of clouds, interaction of passive radiation with clouds, and interaction of active radiation with clouds. This book is organized into three sections and has 11 chapters. After analyzing the spatial and temporal scales involved in the formation and organization of clouds and precipitation, this text examines the microphysical measurement techniques used in probing the microstructure of clouds. The reader is then methodically introduced to the microstructure of atmospheric clouds and precipitation; the formation and structure of fog; and basic shortwave characteristics of “ideal clouds. The temporal behavior of clouds and their interaction with the radiation field are considered, along with the possible effects of cloud models in general circulation studies. The remaining chapters explore the light scattering properties of ice crystals and the radiative characteristics of ice clouds; the laser measurements in clouds; the transmission and reflectivity of ice clouds by active probing; and the theory of multiple scattering of laser beams in clouds. The book concludes by presenting the measurements of the temporal and spatial spreading of a blue-green pulse through clouds and fogs as a function of optical thickness and receiver field-of-view. This text will be helpful to advanced researchers and program managers in terms of reviewing the state of the art and identifying those areas requiring further research efforts.
