Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Engineering - Power Engineering, grade: A, Government Engineering College Thrissur, language: English, abstract: The study conducts a feasibility analysis on Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems (HRES) in Kerala for sustainable and efficient methods of energy production. Energy is a vital input in all sectors of any country's economy. It is crucial for human development index as human development is positively correlated to energy consumption. Until the late 1980's energy has been generated largely by burning coal, hydrocarbon oil and natural gas leading to huge carbon emissions. Hence, environmental crises have become a critical concern for the world today. Emission of greenhouse gases, limited coal availability, environment distortion, rising prices of fossil fuels and pressure on foreign exchange reserves have created hindrance in the prolongation of these resources. Therefore, a new energy economy is developing. This new energy economy generates energy from wind, sun and through heat within earth itself. Energy generated by burning fossil fuels damages the environment and causes climate change. However, energy based on renewable sources in general, wind and solar energy specifically, does not affect the environment that adversely, which conventional energy sources do.

Book excerpt: Renewable energy has the power to generate self-sufficiency in terms of electricity and the ability to be cost-effective and competitive in many areas. However, renewable energies are site specific. It is necessary to assess each case study separately to examine the available resources, environmental constraints and socio-economic factors. Site evaluations include resource categorization, technical practicability, financially viable feasibility and market conditions. The Proposed work focuses on generation of electricity by the help of integrated renewable energy system which includes PV-Wind-Diesel-Storage system for a village Badesatti, Sukma Chhattisgarh. The proposed work evaluates the techno-economic feasibility of a hybrid system generating power for a small community using wind turbine and PV along with grid connection to further ensure uninterrupted power flow. The feasibility of an integrated renewable energy system using wind, solar and DG has been studied by using the HOMER software. This study investigates the economic feasibility analysis of using hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) based electricity generation for a rural community in India. The variables used for the optimization are the solar PV, wind turbine, generator, and batteries. A simulation results representation is developed in Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewable (HOMER).

Book excerpt: POWER ELECTRONICS for GREEN ENERGY CONVERSION Written and edited by a team of renowned experts, this exciting new volume explores the concepts and practical applications of power electronics for green energy conversion, going into great detail with ample examples, for the engineer, scientist, or student. Power electronics has emerged as one of the most important technologies in the world and will play a big role in the conversion of the present power grid systems into smart grids. Applications like HVDC systems, FACTs devices, uninterruptible power systems, and renewable energy systems totally rely on advances in power electronic devices and control systems. Further, the need for renewable energy continues to grow, and the complete departure of fossil fuels and nuclear energy is not unrealistic thanks to power electronics. Therefore, the increasingly more important role of power electronics in the power sector industry remains paramount. This groundbreaking new volume aims to cover these topics and trends of power electronic converters, bridging the research gap on green energy conversion system architectures, controls, and protection challenges to enable their wide-scale implementation. Covering not only the concepts of all of these topics, the editors and contributors describe real-world implementation of these ideas and how they can be used for practical applications. Whether for the engineer, scientist, researcher, or student, this outstanding contribution to the science is a must-have for any library.

Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION 1.1 GLOBAL ENERGY SCENARIO Energy is an important building block in human development and, as such, acts as a key factor in determining the economic development of countries across the world. Nowadays, energy has become indispensable as it is consumed in one form or another almost every hour of the day. As a result, the total energy requirement is increasing rapidly to meet the rapid modernization of mankind as well as the increase in population. The International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts that world primary energy demand between 2008 and 2035 will increase by 1.2 % per year from just over 12,300 million tonnes of oil equivalent (MTOE) to 16,700 MTOE, an overall increase of 40% (World Energy Outlook 2010). This increase in demand is most pronounced in Asian countries followed by the Middle East. Population growth and increases in income per person are the key drivers behind the growing demand for energy

Book excerpt: This book contains the best papers of the International Conference on Advances in Power Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, PEIE 2010, organized by the Association of Computer Electronics and Electrical Engineers (ACEEE), during September 7–9, 2010 in Kochi, Kerala, India. PEIE is an international conference integrating two major areas of electrical en- neering – power electronics and instrumentation. Thus this conference reflects a c- tinuing effort to increase the dissemination of recent research results among prof- sionals who work in the areas of power electronics, instrumentation and electrical engineering The program of this joint conference included several outstanding keynote lectures presented by internationally renowned distinguished researchers who are experts in the various PEIE areas. Their keynote speeches have contributed to heightening the ov- all quality of the program and significance of the theme of the conference. I hope that you will find this collection of the best PEIE 2010 papers an excellent source of inspiration as well as a helpful reference for research in the aforementioned areas. Organizing a conference like this one is not possible without the assistance and continuous support of many people and institutions. I thank Stefan Goeller, Janahanlal Stephen, R Vijay Kumar, and Nessy Thankachan for their constant support and gu- ance. I would like to express my gratitude to Springer’s LNCS-CCIS editorial team, especially Leonie Kunz, for producing such a wonderful proceedings book.
