Book excerpt: Crime and Victimization of the Elderly provides a "state-of-the-art" review of the social scientific literature relating to the crime problems of older persons. Building upon a broad interdisciplinary base, the volume addresses a wide range of issues that will prove to be of interest and value to criminology and gerontology students and to practicing professionals. The book is divided into two major sections. The first focuses upon elderly offenders and the second is devoted to a discussion of elderly victims. All of the major topics normally covered in the criminology and victimology courses are given detailed consideration. These include: the nature and types of crimes committed by the elderly, theories of elderly crime, criminal justice reactions to the older offender, patterns of elderly victimization, explanations of elderly victimization patterns, fear of crime among older persons and the abuse of the elderly in domestic settings. The chapters provide a critical assessment of the formative as well as the most recent empirical research conducted in the United States, Canada and elsewhere. Each chapter includes lists of suggested readings and each major section includes an extensive list of bibliographic references. This book is an invaluable resource to criminologists, gerontologists and social service professionals as it raises questions and defines issues vital to an understanding of the elderly and their association with various aspects of crime.

Book excerpt: This book will help to advance understanding among policymakers, practitioners, and educators and prepare them to limit the negative consequences associated with victimization of older adults. This second edition builds on the earlier edition in five ways. First, new research has been added into each chapter. Second, the tables and figures have been updated, with applied critical thinking questions now included in order to make the tables and figures more interactive with readers. Third, various sections have been added in different chapters. Fourth, chapters 2-7 now include box inserts which include brief overviews written by professionals who are discussing some aspect of elder abuse. Finally, chapter 7 has been added. This new edition will help shed some light on what can be done to prevent elderly persons from being victimized, or at least minimize the consequences of victimization when abuse does occur. It will be of interest to those in several different disciplines, including criminology, gerontology, social work, social welfare, sociology, psychology, victimology, medicine and other social sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines and analyses the experiences of older people as both victims and perpetrators of crime. Drawing upon a wealth of research from British and North American sources, the authors detail the historical experience of the elderly as victims, the extent of present-day criminal victimisation in the home and institutions, the social theories which attempt to explain that experience, and the types of resolution available. The book also addresses the experiences of elderly people in the criminal justice process - the offences to which they are prone, and the implications for penal policy of an increase in the elderly penal population. Crime, Abuse and the Elderly breaks new ground in its focus on the experiences of elderly people as criminal victims in private space, its insistence on a proper engagement of criminology with crimes involving older people, and in its argument that much so-called abuse can be explained criminologically and should be dealt with by the criminal justice system rather than by treatment and welfare agencies. It will be essential reading for students, academics and professionals concerned with the experiences of the elderly.

Book excerpt: Studies of the fear of crime have constituted what is undeniably the fastest growing research area within criminology in the last decade and this shows no sign of diminishing. The editors have a distinguished record of innovative research in the field, being responsible for a number of seminal empirical and theoretical articles. In this volume, they have collected together and for the first time, all the most significant contributions to the field. The collection includes an introductory essay by the editors and articles reflecting: an overview of the field; the causes of vulnerability; the sources of information on victimisation; the methods used to survey fear; the theoretical models employed to explain it; and the nature of policies designed to reduce fear.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Security challenges pose significant hardship for citizens of Caribbean nations. Public safety is threatened by high rates of crime – especially violent crime – in much of the region, the plague of the illicit drug trade, transnational organized crime, gangs, the current global proliferation of crimes of terrorism and related violent extremism and radicalization. The situation diminishes morale among the youth, their education and their future, and operates as a major push factor. Yet, surprisingly, there has been a scarcity of scholarly work that addresses these conditions. This interdisciplinary volume succinctly responds to the gap in criminological and security studies on the Caribbean by drawing attention to the understudied nexus of crime, violence, and security that is so pervasive in the region, and the ways in which underdevelopment re/creates environments for insecurity. The book is organized in three parts: Part one encompasses conceptualizations of crime, violence and punishment. Part two takes up country cases on crime and security. Part three addresses issues of regional security, both public and private. This timely volume will be valuable reading for scholars, students, practitioners and policy makers who share a critical interest in the scope, impact, and inter-relationality of crime, violence, and in/security in the region.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Law - Criminal process, Criminology, Law Enforcement, grade: 17 Punkte (sehr gut), University of Tubingen (Institut f r Kriminologie), course: XII. Post Graduate Course of Victimology, Victim Assistance and Criminal Justice, May 2006, Inter University Centre Dubrovnik, Croatia, 42 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: I. Introduction Regarding the fear of victimization, researchers soon found a disproportional high fear among women and elderly people. In this paper I do not only want to describe the different attempts of explanations dealing with these findings. I also want to test if and to what extend the single explanations fit to the fear of victimization among young German law students... II. Description of the Paradox First of all, the Fear of Victimization - Paradox is in the literature more commonly known as the Fear of Crime - Paradox. But this is inexact: Speaking about the fear of crime, you have to distinguish between a person's perception of his own chances of victimization and the individual estimation of the seriousness of criminal activity in society. In this context the fear of crime is viewed just as fear of victimization. This is the cognitive dimension of fear of crime, the perception that one is vulnerable and exposed to victimization, and that victimization has serious consequences for oneself. That's why I prefer the term "Fear of Victimization - Paradox". Such fear is usually measured by the so called standard term. That is - with some formulation variants: "How safe do you feel when you walk alone in your community at night?" This question asks if the person is personally fearful of crime, and less if he or she is concerned about rising crime as a social issue. But the validity of this standard term is not undisputed: One the one hand, it does not contain the victimization as reference point of fear at all, on the other hand it is not able to cover public crime in

No city environment reflects the meaning of urban life better than a public place. A public place, whatever its nature—a park, a mall, a train platform or a street corner—is where people pass by, meet each other and at times become a victim of crime. With this book, we submit that crime and safety in public places are not issues that can be easily dealt with within the boundaries of a single discipline. The book aims to illustrate the complexity of patterns of crime and fear in public places with examples of studies on these topics contextualized in different cities and countries around the world. This is achieved by tackling five cross-cutting themes: the nature of the city’s environment as a backdrop for crime and fear; the dynamics of individuals’ daily routines and their transit safety; the safety perceptions experienced by those who are most in fear in public places; the metrics of crime and fear; and, finally, examples of current practices in promoting safety. All these original chapters contribute to our quest for safer, more inclusive, resilient, equitable and sustainable cities and human settlements aligned to the Global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
