Book Synopsis Flexible Working by : Birte Christensen-Dalsgaard
Download or read book Flexible Working written by Birte Christensen-Dalsgaard and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile working and remote working from home or a small office, using phone, PC, fax and narrowband Internet is a rapidly increasing practice. The many well-documented benefits of working this way include higher productivity, more time spent with the family and local community and less time wasted commuting. At a community level they include benefits to the environment through substituting physical transport by telecommunications, and re-vitalisation of ruiral communities. Yet, people who work mainly this way face severe problems: a loss of contact with the office grapevine, the out of sight, out of mind syndrome, and exclusion from vital ad-hoc meetings and tutorials. Another major problem is slow speed of communication. This volume summarizes how technologies can revolutionise flexible working practices and go a long way towards solving the isolation problems of flexible workers.
Book Synopsis Intelligence in Networks by : Thongchai Yongchareon
Download or read book Intelligence in Networks written by Thongchai Yongchareon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligence in Networks is a concept, the meaning of which is highly related to the time-period when it is used. In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, it was mainly related to the teleservice repertoire `an sich'. In the 1990s, it is more related to efficient flexibility in the introduction of new teleservices and teleservice repertoire. This state-of-the-art text sets out to identify and study issues related to solutions for increasing intelligence in networks. As examples, intelligence networks (IN), telecommunication information networking architecture (TINA) and mobile agents and active networks are different solutions for improving the grade of network intelligence. The areas under discussion include research and development within various closely related fields such as: Teleservices, service architecture and service creation; Middleware and specification languages; Mobile agents, active networks, plug-and-play issues; and Quality of service and performance.£/LIST£ Intelligence in Networks contains the proceedings of SMARTNET'99, the fifth in a series of conferences on intelligence in networks sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), at the Asian Institute of Technology, Pathumthani, Thailand in November 1999.

Book Synopsis Hunting the 1918 Flu by : Kirsty E. Duncan
Download or read book Hunting the 1918 Flu written by Kirsty E. Duncan and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-08-19 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1918 the Spanish flu epidemic swept the world and killed an estimated 20 to 40 million people in just one year, more than the number that died during the four years of the First World War. To this day medical science has been at a loss to explain the Spanish flu's origin. Most virologists are convinced that sooner or later a similarly deadly flu virus will return with a vengeance; thus anything we can learn from the 1918 flu may save lives in a new epidemic. Responding to sustained interest in this medical mystery, Hunting the 1918 Flu presents a detailed account of Kirsty Duncan's experiences as she organized an international, multi-discipline scientific expedition to exhume the bodies of a group of Norwegian miners buried in Svalbard, all victims of the flu virus. Constant throughout is her determination to honour the Norwegian laws and the Svalbard customs that treat the dead and the living with respect - especially when a live virus, if unearthed, could kill millions. Another theme of the book is the author's growing love for Svalbard and its people. Duncan's narrative describes a large-scale medical project to uncover genetic material from the Spanish flu; it also reveals the turbulent politics of a group moving towards a goal where the egos were as strong as the stakes were high. The author, herself a medical geographer, is very frank about her bruising emotional, financial, and professional experiences on the 'dark side of science.' Duncan raises questions not only about public health, epidemiology, the ethics of science, and the rights of subjects, but also about the role of age, gender, and privilege in science. While her search for the virus has shown promising results, it has also revealed the dangers of science itself being subsumed in the rush for personal acclaim.
