Book excerpt: Prompt gamma-ray and x-ray spectroscopy techniques are being employed to study fast-neutron-induced fission of actinides to determine independent (pre-beta-decay) yields for a wide range of product nuclides. Data are acquired using the GEANIE high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometer at the LANSCE/WNR unmoderated spallation neutron source providing neutrons with energies from below 1 MeV to over 400 MeV. Three different techniques (identification by characteristic gamma rays, by gamma-gamma coincidences, and by fission-gamma coincidences) are being used to gather complementary data sets from which detailed fission yields can be extracted. From these data, mass and charge distributions are determined over a wide incident-neutron energy range. The phenomena of interest include the transition from asymmetric to symmetric fission, the competition between neutron and gamma-ray emission, nuclear structure effects in fission and the angular momentum imparted to the fission products. Results for 238U and 236U are presented.

This book was released on 1966 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental measurements of the gamma-ray pulse height distributions due to the products of fast-neutron-induced fission of Uranium-235 and Uranium-238 are presented. The measurements were made at nine selected times after fission from 15 minutes to 3 days. Irradiation times and counting intervals were chosen to minimize saturation and decay effects. The experimental data were used to calculate 100 energy bin distributions of the absolute number of photons/fission-sec. by means of absolute calibrations of the collimated NaI(T1) detector. The number of fissions in each sample was determined radiochemically. Machine computation was used extensively.

Book Synopsis Materials and Configuration from NMIS Type Neutron Imaging and Gamma Spectroscopy by : Alicia Lauren Swift
Download or read book Materials and Configuration from NMIS Type Neutron Imaging and Gamma Spectroscopy written by Alicia Lauren Swift and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nuclear Material Identification System (NMIS) was first developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) by the US Department of Energy (DOE) in 1984 for nuclear material control and accountability, and for possible future treaty verification applications by the Office of Nuclear Verification since the mid-1990s. NMIS is being developed into a fieldable form (designated FNMIS) and will incorporate gamma spectroscopy and an information barrier. This project, supported by the US DOE at ORNL, tested a previously developed procedure to determine the configuration of an object with unknown geometry and composition from neutron imaging, induced fission radiation detection, and passive and active gamma spectroscopy data. Using this procedure and simulated data from MCNP-PoliMi and MCNPX version 2.6.0, the problem was for one without knowledge of the object to determine its configuration and materials. Gamma spectroscopy showed that polyethylene was on the outside with depleted uranium (DU) metal inside of the polyethylene. Analysis of fast neutron imaging data determined estimates of the radii, heights of the materials, and the presence of a central void. Analysis of the fission mapping data showed that highly enriched uranium (HEU) metal was inside the DU. Since transmission imaging cannot distinguish DU from HEU metal, fission mapping was used to determine the boundary between HEU and DU. Models created from the simulated data were iterated upon by varying the enrichment of the HEU until the calculated time distribution of coincidences agreed with the simulations. The best approximation of the unknown object was concentric cylinders composed of an inner void inside of HEU (84.7 wt% 235U), surrounded by DU, surrounded by polyethylene. The final estimation had the correct materials and geometry, with error in the radii estimates of material regions varying from 1.58% at best and -4.25% at worst; error in the height estimates varied from -2% to 12%. The error in the HEU enrichment estimate was 5.9 wt%, or within 2.5 [sigma] of the true value. The accuracies of these determinations could be adequate for arms control applications. Future work will apply this iterative reconstructive procedure to other unknown objects to further test and refine it.
Book Synopsis Neutron Capture Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy by : R. E. Chrien
Download or read book Neutron Capture Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy written by R. E. Chrien and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-12-29 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post World War II era witnessed a tremendous growth in the research carried out in neutron-induced reactions and especially in neutron capture y-ray studies. This growth was stimulated by the availability of neutron sources, such as reactors and accelerators, and by the development of high resolution y-ray and conversion electron detectors. Today the combination of high flux reactors and precise instrumentation has produced spectral data of exceptional quality, as the pages of these proceedings illustrate. The world-wide community of the practioners of the art of cap ture y-ray spectroscopy has met three times in the last decade: the first international symposium on this subject was held at Studsvik, Sweden in 1969, and the second at Petten, The Netherlands in 1974. A smaller meeting, of mostly u. S. and some European parti cipation, was held at Argonne National Laboratory in 1966. A perusal of the proceedings of these meetings shows the striking ad vances in this now mature field of physics over the last dozen years. Each meeting has seen a small but perceptible increase in the number of papers presented and the number of laboratories repre sented. More importantly, each meeting has documented the increasing impact of (n,y) reasearch, not only on other areas of basic physics, but also on commercial and medical applications of this technology. A total of 29 invited papers and 97 contributed papers were presented at this symposium.
Book Synopsis Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes by : International Atomic Energy Agency
Download or read book Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA Radiation Technology Repo. This book was released on 2012 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication addresses recent developments in neutron generator (NG) technology. It presents information on compact instruments with high neutron yield to be used for neutron activation analysis (NAA) and prompt gamma neutron activation analysis in combination with high count rate spectrometers. Traditional NGs have been shown to be effective for applications including borehole logging, homeland security, nuclear medicine and the on-line analysis of aluminium, coal and cement. Pulsed fast thermal neutron analysis, as well as tagged and timed neutron analysis, are additional techniques which can be applied using NG. Furthermore, NG can effectively be used for elemental analysis and is also effective for analysis of hidden materials by neutron radiography. Useful guidelines for developing NG based research laboratories are also provided in this publication.
