Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XVII. SOME GAS ENGINE TROUBLES AND HOW TO LOCATE THEM. FAILURE TO START. If an engine has run once it will again, provided everything is right. Failure to start means that something is not right, and the quickest method is to look for the trouble in a systematic way. Either one of two things is probably the trouble--the lack of a spark or fuel. Ignition Troubles: Switch not on. Batteries weak or dead. Platinum points pitted. Platinum points stuck together. Platinum points dirty or wet. Spark plug fouled. Spark plug points too far apart. Spark plug points too close together. Porcelain cracked. Mica oil-soaked. Wire poorly insulated. Engine not properly timed. Timer does not make contact. Timer wires loose or broken. Coil broken down. Wet wires. Carbureter or Mixing Valve: No fuel. Fuel not turned on. Float stuck. No vent in fuel tank. Needle valve closed. Needle valve too far open. Water in carbureter. Auxiliary air spring: Too stiff, Too weak. Intake air spring too stiff. Exhaust valve spring too weak. Rich mixture. Lean mixture. Carbureter flooded. Carbureter leaking. Valves leak. Valves not properly timed. Loose manifold connections. No compression. FUEL TANK. No fuel in the tank is often the cause of failure to start, or stopping after the engine has run for a time. Don't guess-- see for yourself and be certain. The fuel tank should be placed so that the bottom of it is higher than the carbureter unless a pump or air pressure is used. It is necessary to have a vent either in the tank or the cap to the filling tube. Try flooding the carbureter to see whether fuel has entered the bowl of the carbureter. BATTERIES RUN DOWN QUICKLY. If the switch is left 'on' when engine is not running, and the circuit is not broken in the timer, ..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1913, Clarence Floyd Hirshfield's book Gas Engines for the Farm was likely unique upon its release. The book is intended to be a buyer's manual to be used by farmer's considering the purchases of a gas engine. As mechanical power would have been a relatively new advantage for a farmer in 1913, literature on the subject was presumably scarce, and thus this book was intended to fill that gap. Early chapters cover the basics of a gas-powered engine, including appropriate fuels and the operational principles and design of an internal combustion engine. Comparisons are made between the steam engine and the gas-powered engine in order to illuminate some of the important differences. Later chapters wade more deeply into the specifics of an engine's operation and upkeep, presenting information on the cooling system, carburetors, the ignition apparatus, mufflers, and more. This volume is truly a treasure chest of early information on gas-powered farm equipment. The final chapters of the book are essentially the buyer's guide. Hirshfeld identifies desirable features of construction, the brands that one should consider, and finally examines how to best balance power, speed, and price. There is no doubt that one would be better prepared to make a large purchase after reading this manual. Read today, this book is primarily a pleasant trip back in time. While the fundamentals of the internal combustion engine have not changed in 100 years, the advancements in power and speed have been significant. The early chapters of this book are thus still relevant today; however, the latter chapters are most definitely out of date. Gas Engines for the Farm is recommended for all rural historians, or anybody simply looking to take a trip back in time to when gas powered engines were first making their presence felt on the farms across America.
