Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Family Income: Its Distribution and Relation to Nonfarm Income A concentration of State economic areas in the highest median rural farm family income group occurs in the diagonal that extends from the southwestern corner of Minnesota to northeastern Ohio. Twenty-one of 38 areas in this in come group are found here. The remaining 17 areas are widely dispersed-in locations that extend from central Connecticut to Puget Sound and southern California. This highest median income group of areas comprises almost 11 percent of all State economic areas, and, in 19h9, these areas contained 11 percent of all rural farm families and unrelated individuals. The estimated median incomes for each State economic area are shown in appendix table 111. Perhaps, however, a somewhat more detailed accounting is needed of the geography of area median rural farm family incomes for the lowest and the highest median income groups. It is in these two groups that greatest possibilities for variation occur. Among the 51 areas with median incomes of less than 6 had less than $600 (2 under and the lowest was $h56. An additional 6 of these areas had median incomes that ranged between $600 and $7119, while in 13 areas the median incomes ranged between $750 and $899. In a little more than half (26) of these lowest income areas, the median incomes fell beween $900 and $999. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: The central aim of the Common Agricultural Policy is to support the incomes of farmers, yet reliable information on the overall incomes of farmers and their households is scarce. In general, farmers in the EU are not a low-income or poor sector of society and much of the present CAP income support goes to those that are relatively well-off. This book, the 3rd edition to address these issues, has been updated and expanded to include: updated coverage of statistics and references; the major changes in methodology of income measurement flowing from the 1995 revision of the European System of Accounts; a critical examination of wealth and balance sheets for the agricultural industry as currently calculated; incorporation of material from Japan and countries in Central and Eastern Europe that are candidates for EU membership.

Book excerpt: Policymakers interested in reducing poverty and improving income distribution in rural Egypt should focus on nonfarm income, which not only accounts for almost 60 percent of total income for the rural poor but also favorably affects income distribution. Nonfarm income is an inequality-reducing source of income in a land-scarce setting such as rural Egypt because inadequate land "pushes" poorer households out of agriculture and into the nonfarm sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to conventional wisdom that equates rural economies with agriculture, rural residents in developing countries often rely heavily on activities other than farming for their income. Indeed, nonfarm work accounts for between one-third and one-half of rural incomes in the developing world. In recent years, accelerating globalization, increasing competition from large businesses, expanding urban markets for rural goods and services, and greater availability of information and communication technology have combined to expose rural nonfarm businesses to new opportunities as well as new risks. By examining these rapid changes in the rural nonfarm economy, international experts explore how the rural nonfarm economy can contribute to overall economic growth in developing countries and how the poor can participate in this rapidly evolving segment of the economy. The authors review an array of recent studies of the rural nonfarm economy in order to summarize existing empirical evidence, explore policy implications, and identify future research priorities. They examine the varied scale, structure, and composition of the rural nonfarm economy, as well as its relationship with agricultural and urban enterprises. And they address key questions about the role of public intervention in the rural nonfarm economy and how the rural poor can participate in and navigate the rapid transition underway in rural areas. The contributors offer new insights to specialists in rural development and to others interested in overall economic development.
