Book Synopsis Cultural-Linguistic Explorations into Spirituality, Emotionality, and Society by : Hans-Georg Wolf
Download or read book Cultural-Linguistic Explorations into Spirituality, Emotionality, and Society written by Hans-Georg Wolf and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers Cultural-Linguistic explorations into the diverse Lebenswelten of a wide range of cultural contexts, such as South Africa, Hungary, India, Nigeria, China, Romania, Iran, and Poland. The linguistic expedition sets out to explore three thematic segments that were, thus far, under-researched from a cultural linguistic perspective – spirituality, emotionality, and society. The analytical tools provided by Cultural Linguistics, such as cultural conceptualizations and cultural metaphors, are not only applied to various corpora and types of texts but also recalibrated and renegotiated. As a result, the studies in this collective volume showcase a rich body of work that contributes to the manifestation of Cultural Linguistics as an indispensable paradigm in modern language studies. Being a testament to the inseparability of language and culture, this book will enlighten academics, professionals and students working in the fields of Cultural Linguistics, sociology, gender studies, religious studies, and cultural studies.

Book excerpt: This unique collection of essays by leading international scholars gives a profound introduction into the great diversity and richness of facets forming the study of one of earth’s most exciting areas, the Iranian and Caucasian lands. Each of the 37 contributions sheds light on a very special topic, the range of which comprises historical, cultural, ethnographical, religious, political and last but not least literary and linguistic issues, beginning from the late antiquity up to current times. Especially during the last decennia these two regions gained greater interest worldwide due to several developments in politics and culture. This fact grants the book, intended as a festschrift for Prof. Garnik Asatrian, a special relevance. Contributors: Victoria Arakelova; Marco Bais; Uwe Bläsing; Vahe S. Boyajian; Claudia A. Download or read book Tajik Linguistics written by Shinji Ido and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-01-30 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is hardly an overstatement to say that Soviet linguists had a monopoly over Tajik linguistics before the dissolution of the Soviet Union, when most studies on the language were accessible exclusively through Russian and Tajik. Today, however, linguists dealing with Tajik are diverse not only in terms of their location but also in terms of their disciplinary orientation within linguistics, making it difficult for the general linguist to work out the state of the art of the linguistic study of Tajik. This volume aims to address this difficulty by collecting in a handbook format recent (post-Soviet) developments in the study of Tajik that now lie scattered in different subdisciplines of linguistics. The volume thus showcases the state of the art of post-Soviet Tajik linguistics and can be used as a guide for linguists interested in the language.

Book Synopsis Theory and Practice in the Music of the Islamic World by : Rachel Harris
Download or read book Theory and Practice in the Music of the Islamic World written by Rachel Harris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of original essays is dedicated to Owen Wright in recognition of his formative contribution to the study of music in the Islamic Middle East. Wright’s work, which comprises, at the time of writing, six field-defining volumes and countless articles, has reconfigured the relationship between historical musicology and ethnomusicology. No account of the transformation of these fields in recent years can afford to ignore his work. Ranging across the Middle East, Central Asia and North India, this volume brings together historical, philological and ethnographic approaches. The contributors focus on collections of musical notation and song texts, on commercial and ethnographic recordings, on travellers’ reports and descriptions of instruments, on musical institutions and other spaces of musical performance. An introduction provides an overview and critical discussion of Wright’s major publications. The central chapters cover the geographical regions and historical periods addressed in Wright’s publications, with particular emphasis on Ottoman and Timurid legacies. Others discuss music in Greece, Iraq and Iran. Each explores historical continuities and discontinuities, and the constantly changing relationships between music theory and practice. An edited interview with Owen Wright concludes the book and provides a personal assessment of his scholarship and his approach to the history of the music of the Islamic Middle East. Extending the implications of Wright’s own work, this volume argues for an ethnomusicology of the Islamic Middle East in which past and present, text and performance are systematically in dialogue.
Book Synopsis Perspectives on Academic Persian by : Abbas Aghdassi
Download or read book Perspectives on Academic Persian written by Abbas Aghdassi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-17 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the idea of Academic Persian in the growing competition of many Middle Eastern languages to produce and highlight their academic discourse. Similar to academic English, most West Asian languages including Persian, Turkish, and Arabic are developing new styles and genres to produce academic texts. The book addresses a major question: "What is academic Persian?" Intended for researchers, experts, analysts, policy-makers, and students in Persian, Iranian studies, and Islamic studies, as well as Near Eastern languages and Middle Eastern cultures and languages, the book includes numerous technical contributions on the emerging markets involving west Asian languages. Since indexing, abstracting, crawling, metrics, citations, and visibility are becoming hot issues for academics, service providers (e.g., publishers) and policy-makers (e.g., university heads), a knowledge of academic Persian will help readers to grasp what Persian, and other similar languages, require in academic markets.
