Book Synopsis Lug's Forgotten Donegal Kingdom by : Brian Lacey
Download or read book Lug's Forgotten Donegal Kingdom written by Brian Lacey and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using archaeology, history, place-names, mythology, and folklore, this book examines one of the smallest territorial units in Ireland from the beginning of history c.600, and traces its development to c.1100. It argues that these people from a remote area of Donegal constituted a tiny kingdom that had an ongoing association with the pagan god Lug - Lugh Lamhfhada. The book demonstrates how the people's original devotion to Lug was transmuted through conversion to Christianity, reconstituted in aspects of the cult of St. Colum Cille and of a probably invented local saint - Beaglaoch. From c.725, their territory and influence were expanding - eventually giving rise to the powerful O'Donnell and O'Doherty families. Although relatively large in contemporary European terms, there is still only limited documentary evidence. However, this study makes the Donegal landscape itself speak in a revealing manner and offers a unique insight into wider early medieval history and religious culture.

Book excerpt: This illustrated, well indexed book, was created exclusively to help you find your family in County Longford, Ireland. Focusing specifically on families within the county, it includes an introduction to research and sources in Longford. The most numerous families from birth records are given, as well as rather rare Longford families found in heraldic records. Included you will find a full page county map from the Atlas of Ireland, along with a listing of modern parishes and old townlands, along with the address and location of records for more research. Published by the Irish Genealogical Foundation, this book was originally made for members researching in Longford. What this book does. This work includes copies of actual records (some worn, torn and faded), from the IGF Library. It also includes rough sketches of family coats of arms and notes from centuries past - seldom found elsewhere. The resources provided here will help research any family in the county, including old Irish families, and settler families from England, Scotland, Wales and the continent. This book is a hands on guide for finding your family in Longford - some family history is included - but it is not a gigantic collection of family histories . (For that see 'The Book of Irish Families, great & small', the first book in the Irish Families series by O'Laughlin.)
