Book excerpt: Excerpt from Familiar Animals and Their Wild Kindred: For the Third Reader Grade By dispensing with lists of words for spelling, diacriticals definitions, and paragraph numbers, and by developing a real and apparent unity in the subjects treated, they introduce the child at once into the form, style, and method of the litera ture of books. By a natural link of association, they conduct the reader from the more familiar to the less familiar facts about ani mals, thus awakening his attention, stimulating his powers of observation, and leading him to discern, compare, and think for himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Familiar Life in Field and Forest: The Animals, Birds, Frogs, and Salamanders One can never tell at what moment some surpris ing demonstration of wild life will occur at one's very doorstep. What with two deer, nine weasels, and a performing bear, all of which appeared in one day last summer close to my studio, I concluded that our tame mountain retreat had relapsed again to the wild and happy conditions of the primitive forest. But I was forced to change my mind a few days after, when an Italian with his organ ground out Johnny, get your gun within forty feet of the spot where the wild deer had stood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Animals at Home My travels in search of light on the "Animals at Home" have taken me up and down the Rocky Mountains for nearly thirty years. In the canyons from British Columbia to Mexico, I have lighted my campfire, far beyond the bounds of law and order, at times, and yet I have found no place more rewarding than the Yellowstone Park, the great mountain haven of wild life. Whenever travellers penetrate into remote regions where human hunters are unknown, they find the wild things half tame, little afraid of man, and inclined to stare curiously from a distance of a few paces. But very soon they learn that man is their most dangerous enemy, and fly from him as soon as he is seen. It takes a long time and much restraint to win back their confidence. In the early days of the West, when game abounded and when fifty yards was the extreme deadly range of the hunters weapons, wild creatures were comparatively tame. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Habits and Characters of Various Wild Animals It is, of course, impossible to write from personal observation and study all the data that are neces sary for the completion of a book of this kind. One may be tolerably familiar with the life-habits and customs of a certain beast, may indeed regard it as an intimate friend; but life is too short for one to learn from practical observation all the details concerning it that are necessary its changes of coat, length of life, and so on. If one could devote all one's studies to one particular species, it might be possible; but in dealing with several there comes a point when inaccuracy must be risked or extensive references made. Realising this, my method has been first to write all I know concerning the animal dealt with, and, this done, to apply to outside authority for such supple mentary evidence as might prove necessary. If my original notes have appeared sufficient, they have been left untouched; and in every case my own data, when sufficiently wide, have been given, whether or not they happen to coincide with the notes of other, and probably far better qualified, naturalists. On other occasions, personal data on a certain point have either been entirely lacking or insufficiently substantial, in which case the best authorities have been sought and quoted. A final reading of the finished chapters has brought home very forcibly the realisation that at least half the information contained in this volume is the result of the studies of my boyhood. It dates back from my ninth year, and a very large number of the incidents quoted occurred during the succeeding seven years. In those days the study of wild birds and animals, particularly animals, combined with an intense love for angling, led me to explore many lonely mountain lochs and forests, and was so absorbing an attraction that it is to be feared it excluded studies of a more important kind. I had no books on British animals so far as the school library was concerned, no one seemed to have written any, and during holidays a reference library was not within hailing distance. The natural history books annually presented by kindly relatives were given over to such curiosities of the African veldt and the Indian jungle as best lent themselves to illus tration, and contained nothing concerning the creatures I knew and loved. Gamekeepers, stone breakers, and water-bailiffs were the only references available; and I very soon learnt that the sole way to acquire accurate knowledge was to find out for one's self - a state of affairs for which I to-day thank my lucky star! Although I have left the strict line of historical truth in many places, the animals in this book were all real characters. They lived the lives I have depicted, and showed the stamp of heroism and personality more strongly by far than it has been in the power of my pen to tell. The great horned owls and the goshawks got most of the rabbits before Swiftfoot and his pack could round them up. The pack grew lean. They closed in around the trail over which the two-legged animals came, driving dog sledges. When the dogs smelled the wolf pack they barked and snarled and became ridiculously excited, and the men animals got out their black sticks. Every addition to the wonderful collection I studied for days, and sometimes weeks, before capturing it successfully with my camera.
