Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Falstaff Johnson scoffed at his friend Morgann's innovation, and critics since have been disposed to pay him back in his coin. But they would hardly have been so quick to do it to Dryden, though twice explicitly and without qualification he calls Falstaff liar, coward, glutton, and buf'foon.2 And Thomas Fuller, Oldmixon, and all the seventeenth century with them take it for granted that he is nothing else.3 Since then the world had moved on a bit;' yet a critical opinion on the drama propounded amid all the vagaries of the hey day oi Romanticism, by one neither a dramatist nor a student of the drama, is on the face of it quite as questionable as the contrary opinion which till then had stood unimpeached. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Falstaff and His Companions Crown Prince, in order to divert from himself the jealousy of his suspicious father, he had played a part like Brutus, spending his time idly and among loose companions; and that after he had ascended the throne they were ban ished from his presence. History knows nothing of this; but shows us the Prince in the service of his father, and performing his part as a good soldier, doing his best in slaughter and devas tation, like all the other heroes of his time. He had also as a friend in his youth a person seriously disposed, whose very presence repelled all frivolity. This man was Sir John Oldcastle, who is known to us as having afterwards suffered martyrdom as a follower of the reformed doctrine of Wycliffe. The Prince, after he had become king, fell outwith him on this account; and Sir John was handed over by the Church to suffer the cruelest death of a heretic. Book Synopsis On the Character of Sir John Falstaff by : James Orchard Halliwell
Download or read book On the Character of Sir John Falstaff written by James Orchard Halliwell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Character of Sir John Falstaff: As Originally Exhibited by Shakespeare in the Two Parts of King Henry IV The object of the following pages is to endeavour to place in a clearer light a question which has been frequently discussed, but still left in considerable obscurity. In the earlier ages of Shakespearian criticism, it appears to have been taken for granted that the character of Falstaff was intended to represent a person equally historical with the other dramatis person; and the absurd notion that its prototype was Sir John Fastolf appears to be hardly yet exploded. In the present tract I have endeavoured to establish what appears to me an important fact connected with this subject, and I have fortunately been enabled to illustrate it with several documents and passages from rare books, which have escaped the researches of former critics. I have taken the opportunity of publishing a few notes relating to Shakespeare, but not immediately connected with the subject of this essay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Falstaff's Letters It would seem to be the fate of some books to be born into the world out of their due time, and thus to miss the meed of praise and fame to their merit entitles them, and which under more fortunate auspices they would doubtless have obtained.
