Book Synopsis Introduction to Religious Philosophy by : Y. Masih
Download or read book Introduction to Religious Philosophy written by Y. Masih and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1991 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book with a clearly visible theme of Advaita. That is not to say, that Masih has not spoken of other things. However, this book is not an introduction to philosophy of religion, but an introduction to religious philosophy. Thus it escapes the narrow confines of being a mere introduction to religious philosophy, as there are plenty of insights on philosophy of religion as well. A striking aspect of this book is that the author not only believes, but also calculates logically, as to how the various insights of different religions must crossfertilise the visions of one another. This exercise obviously demands a great deal of understanding of the various religious commitments. The author quotes the example of Ramakrishna Paramahansa who suggested that there is something like religious unity and that one is capable of extending oneself beyond the limited confines of a single religion, of the Supreme Spirit. Thus, understanding the Supreme Spirit as a concept is useful, because it is in the nature of a concept that is shareable and comm-unicable. One appreciable part of the book is the sweep it has over the subject... from Galloway and Martinieu to J.N. Findlay, Hare Blik, Kant, Hastings, Rashdall to McCloskey and Radhakrishnan, the author has drawn from various thinkers.

Book Synopsis The Trinity in the New Testament by : Arthur W. Wainwright
Download or read book The Trinity in the New Testament written by Arthur W. Wainwright and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2001-08-13 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often said that the doctrine of the Trinity was implicit in the religion of the New Testament Christians but only received theological formulation when their successors reflected on the faith by which they were living. Mr. Wainwright sets out to discover how far the writers of the New Testament were conscious of the problem involved in their faith which led to the working out of the doctrine by their successors. His conclusion, based upon a meticulous examination of the evidence, is that, although they made no formal statement of the doctrine, the problem was present in their minds and that they were seeking to answer it. So, in so far as doctrine is an answer to a problem, the doctrine of the Trinity emerges in the New Testament, and is far from being a speculation inessential to the Christian message.

Book Synopsis Negativism of Revelation? by : Edward van't Slot
Download or read book Negativism of Revelation? written by Edward van't Slot and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do those who believe 'have' when they 'have faith'? What traces does the experience of faith leave in the believer's existence? And can theologians assure that their studies will genuinely have something to do with 'the wholly Other'? Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945), operating within the framework of Karl Barth's (1886-1968) theology, addressed those questions in order to complete this framework. The ensuing dialogue between those great theologians affords us a deeper insight in fundamental concepts such as 'revelation', 'faith', 'christological concentration', 'analogy', 'church' and 'discipleship'. In this study, Edward van 't Slot reads this dialogue with regard to both its historical and its theological significance. He shows what Bonhoeffer means when he attacks Barth's 'positivism of revelation', and compares it with Barth's earlier 'negativism of revelation'.
Book Synopsis Jesus and the Forgiveness of Sins by : Tobias Hägerland
Download or read book Jesus and the Forgiveness of Sins written by Tobias Hägerland and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-10 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospels record that Jesus purported to forgive sins. What significance would such a claim have had for his contemporaries and what would the implications have been for his identity as a first-century popular prophet? Tobias Hägerland answers these questions and more as he investigates the forgiveness of sins in the mission of the historical Jesus. The Gospels are interpreted within the context of first-century Judaism as part of a broader reconstruction of Jesus' career as a healer and prophet, and rhetorical criticism is introduced as a tool for explaining how the gospel tradition about Jesus and forgiveness developed. Hägerland combines detailed exegesis and rigorous methodology with a holistic view of the historical Jesus, evaluating recent scholarship about first-century Jewish prophets and utilizing previously neglected textual evidence to present a thorough investigation of the theology of forgiveness in early Judaism and primitive Christianity.

Book Synopsis A History of Early Christian Creeds by : Wolfram Kinzig
Download or read book A History of Early Christian Creeds written by Wolfram Kinzig and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 881 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of early Christian creeds contains an up-to-date account of their origin and development from the credal texts in the New Testament to the fully fledged classical formulae of the 4th century. It includes the creeds’ use and alteration in subsequent periods until the time of Charlemagne and the beginnings of the filioque controversy. In addition, the author provides a scholarly commentary on the most common ancient confessions: the Nicene Creed and the Apostles’ Creed. Going beyond previous studies, the book contains chapters dedicated to the use of creeds in law, art, music, everyday life and even magic. Recently discovered source texts, such as a new Ethiopic version of the Roman Creed and a short recension of the Creed of Nicaea-Constantinople, receive extensive treatment. Credal developments in the eastern churches beyond the borders of the Roman Empire complete this comprehensive overview. This volume is intended both as a textbook for advanced students of theology and cognate disciplines and as a reference book on the creeds in a wide range of contexts. All source texts are accompanied by modern English translations.
