Book Synopsis The Other Half of Gender by : Ian Bannon
Download or read book The Other Half of Gender written by Ian Bannon and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to bring the gender and development debate full circle-from a much-needed focus on empowering women to a more comprehensive gender framework that considers gender as a system that affects both women and men. The chapters in this book explore definitions of masculinity and male identities in a variety of social contexts, drawing from experiences in Latin America, the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa. It draws on a slowly emerging realization that attaining the vision of gender equality will be difficult, if not impossible, without changing the ways in which masculinities are defined and acted upon. Although changing male gender norms will be a difficult and slow process, we must begin by understanding how versions of masculinities are defined and acted upon.
Download or read book Voice and Agency written by Jeni Klugman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent advances in important aspects of the lives of girls and women, pervasive challenges remain. These challenges reflect widespread deprivations and constraints and include epidemic levels of gender-based violence and discriminatory laws and norms that prevent women from owning property, being educated, and making meaningful decisions about their own lives--such as whether and when to marry or have children. These often violate their most basic rights and are magnified and multiplied by poverty and lack of education. This groundbreaking book distills vast data and hundreds of studies to shed new light on deprivations and constraints facing the voice and agency of women and girls worldwide, and on the associated costs for individuals, families, communities, and global development. The volume presents major new findings about the patterns of constraints and overlapping deprivations and focuses on several areas key to women s empowerment: freedom from violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights, ownership of land and housing, and voice and collective action. It highlights promising reforms and interventions from around the world and lays out an urgent agenda for governments, civil society, development agencies, and other stakeholders, including a call for greater investment in data and knowledge to benchmark progress.
Book Synopsis Changing Social Norms to Universalize Girls' Education in East Africa by : Auma Okwany
Download or read book Changing Social Norms to Universalize Girls' Education in East Africa written by Auma Okwany and published by Maklu. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The educational experience reproduces gender ideologies and social norms, which interact with schooling for girls in very particular ways and are implicated in their persistent gendered exclusion and marginalization. The authors in this volume focus on this link by taking a social norms approach to profile the processes, strategies of and research on community-led interventions. The chapters are paced around a pilot project that critically adapted a successful model in India to develop context-appropriate integrated approaches to universalizing secondary education for girls in purposively selected rural and urban poor contexts in Kenya and Uganda. The analyses provide reflexive documentation of the successes and challenges of project implementation activities that have successfully contested girls’ exclusion and marginalization in education. This requires a sustained focus on the link between social and educational institutions and policies and working in an integrated manner with a range of policy actors including young people and targeted communities to bring about significant and sustainable change.

Book excerpt: The most innovative introduction to Sociology in a generation presents a coherent essay that inspires students to develop their sociological imaginations: to see the world and personal events from a new perspective, and to confront sociological issues on a day-to-day basis. This engaging text introduces the discipline of sociology to the contemporary student and provides an integrated, comprehensible framework from which to view the world. In each chapter, authors Jeanne H. Ballantine and Keith A. Roberts provide an organizing theme that is not exclusively tied to one theoretical paradigm to help students see relationships between topics. Book Synopsis The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child by : Virginia Paola Lalli
Download or read book The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child written by Virginia Paola Lalli and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-11-21 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1989 International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the 1990 African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC) are two major international treaties protecting minors. Each treaty gives rise to new perspectives on children’s rights, and enshrine the principles of the best interests of the child and of children’s ownership of rights. The ACRWC incorporates the CRC’s rights while taking into consideration the specificity of the African context, striving to balance the rule of law with local customs. This book seeks to illustrate the rights and duties enshrined in the ACRWC, as well as the responsibilities established therein regarding the protection of minors. The role of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) will also be examined, in particular its activity of monitoring the States Parties’ implementation of the ACRWC and its institutional powers in exercising its powers. Finally, the book will analyse the progress made by the States Parties to the treaties. The focus will be both on the formal aspect of harmonizing national legal systems and the international rights, and on the substantive “steps required” of States Parties to reach the “opinion of law or necessity” that the ACRWC’s provisions should be perceived, first and foremost, as necessary and socially useful, as well as legally binding.
