Book excerpt: Aligned with the American Association of Community College's 21st Century Initiative for community college completion, coaching has emerged in higher education as a promising practice in student support services, credited with increasing student progress, retention, and completion. Though a relatively new service compared to such student support services as counseling and advising, hundreds of colleges and universities have implemented coaching programs. However, little is known about the practice of coaching, including the frequency, nature, and modes of contact as they relate to student perseverance and degree or certificate completion. This study fills this gap in the literature using data analysis from 5,808 students from 15 Ohio-based community colleges engaged in the Ohio Association of Community Colleges Coaches Program and framed by Astin's Theory of Involvement and Bourdieu's Social Capital Theory. Results of the study found 17 of 52 variables influenced the study's criterion variable, credit-hour completion. The large sample population and multi-campus nature of this study contributes to the literature and adds significantly to the discussion on the impact of academic success coaching in higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although research shows the utilization of advising services can impact academic performance and provide students with a point of connection to postsecondary institutions, the effect of advising services in the experiences of traditional-aged college student attending community colleges has only recently been explored. This causal-comparative research study was designed to address the gap in literature concerning the use and effectiveness of academic advising services in community colleges. The study included a convenience sample of 99 community college students, between the ages of 18 and 24 years, from a small community college. Participants completed an online version of the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) and data were collected from March 2019 through November 2019. A Hotelling’s T2 test was conducted to determine if the utilization of academic advising services significantly impacted participant grade point averages (GPAs), number of semesters enrolled, and level of student engagement. The results of the Hotelling’s T2 test were statistically significant; therefore, post-hoc testing in the form of three independent samples t-tests was conducted. The study found that there was only a statistically significant difference in the GPAs of participants who utilized academic advising services when compared to those who did not. There were no statistically significant differences for number of semesters enrolled or level of student engagement between the two groups. Further research is recommended to determine if these results can be generalized to the overall population or if a longitudinal design may provide a clearer perspective of the effect of advising services over time.
Book Synopsis Success Factors Among Community College Students in an Online Learning Environment by : Paula B. Doherty

This book was released on 2000-08-16 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little is known about student success in online learning environments, especially how the predisposing characteristics that the learner brings to the learning environment may differentially affect student outcomes. This study explored the question of whether a student's "readiness" to be a self-directed learner is a predictor of student success in an online community college curriculum. The specific goal of this investigation was to determine whether there was a significant relationship between self-directed learning readiness-as measured by Guglielmino's (1977) Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS)- and student success-as measured by course completion, grade point average (GPA) and student satisfaction, the latter assessed by student responses to an opinion poll. The subjects of this study were community college students in the state of Washington, enrolled in one or more transfer-level online courses delivered via WashingtonONLINE (WAOL) during fall quarter 1999. Students who voluntarily chose to respond to two elective surveys comprised the study sample. A correlational research design was used to test the explanatory power of self-directed learning readiness and to describe the relationships between variables. Since this study was designed to test hypothesized relationships, the resulting correlation coefficients were interpreted in terms of their statistical significance. The expected outcome of this study was to confirm or disconfirm a statistically significant relationship between self-directed learning readiness and student success in an online community college curriculum. The findings of this study failed to achieve this outcome due to (1) the lack of statistical reliability of the SDLRS among the subject population; (2) the resulting lack of validity of the SDLRS among the study sample; (3) a nonresponse effect; and (4) a self-selection effect. The unanticipated outcome of this study was evidence that student perception of student/instructor interactions is a single variable predictor of student success among community college students in an online learning environment. Recommendations for further study include Web-specific research methodologies that address the potentially deleterious effects of nonresponse and self-selection in cyber-research environments and continued exploration of the multiple facets of student success in asynchronous learning domains.

Book Synopsis The Role of Academic Advising in Working with Underprepared Community College Students by : Beth D. Bents
Download or read book The Role of Academic Advising in Working with Underprepared Community College Students written by Beth D. Bents and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community colleges face many unique challenges when working with students, and the number of students testing into remedial level college courses is one of them. It has been suggested the relationship students have with their advisor can help these students to be successful at the college. The purpose of this study was to determine if students observed a connection between their success and the relationship they have with their advisor. This qualitative study focused on the view of current community college students who had been or were currently enrolled in a remedial course in a Midwestern community college. Students were asked to participate in an online survey that consisted of 12 questions. Once the survey results were collected, the responses were analyzed for common responses and trends. The results showed that the majority of students felt their advisor did play a role in their overall success, thoughts about how this happens still vary.
