Book excerpt: This study investigates the factors of farm success, determines the profile of small successful farmers and also explores the factors affecting farmers' perception of success. Farm size was measured in terms of gross sales and a profit index (equal to ratio of gross profit over gross profit minus management return) was used as a measure of financial efficiency and also as a proxy for farmers' profitability. A sample of seventy-three farmers, further divided in four groups based on a combination of farm size and profit levels, was used in the analyses. Means comparisons using t-tests to identify success factors, a multiple regression estimating the effects of main success factors identified through t-tests and a logistic regression estimating the contribution of profitability and other factors on farmers' success perception were based on data from Farm Business Association (1991-1996 period) and from survey. Results indicate that farms' profitability is affected negatively by farmer's age but positively by farmer's education, crop yields, machinery and labor efficiency, percent of rented acres and percent of revenue from livestock.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Smallholder farmers are the stewards of more than 80 percent of the world's farms. These small family businesses produce about one-third of the world's food. In Africa and Asia, smallholders dominate the production of food crops, as well as export commodities such as cocoa, coffee, and cotton. However, smallholders and farm workers remain among the poorest segments of the population, and they are on the frontline of climate change. Smallholder farmers face constraints in accessing inputs, finance, knowledge, technology, labor, and markets. Raising farm-level productivity in a sustainable way is a key development priority. Agribusinesses are increasingly working with smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries to secure agricultural commodities. More productive smallholders boost rural incomes and economic growth, as well as reduce poverty. Smallholders also represent a growing underserved market for farm inputs, information, and financial services. Working with Smallholders: A Handbook for Firms Building Sustainable Supply Chains (third edition) shows agribusinesses how to engage more effectively with smallholders and to develop sustainable, resilient, and productive supply chains. The book compiles practical solutions and cutting-edge ideas to overcome the challenges facing smallholders. This third edition is substantially revised from the second edition and incorporates new material on the potential for digital technologies and sustainable farming. This handbook is written principally to outline opportunities for the private sector. The content may also be useful to the staffs of governmental or nongovernmental development programs working with smallholders, as well as to academic and research institutions."--

Book excerpt: This study uses ordered logistic regression models with data collected from eighty-six online surveys completed by small-scale producers in Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, and Wyoming to assess factors which most contribute to the overall success and profitability of small-scale diversified farms. Results indicate success and profitability may be partially explained by the number of acres owned/leased, use of wholesale outlets, farming as a primary occupation, years of experience, and use of outside business related services. Results may be useful as they indicate producer and operation characteristics that are lead to more profitable and successful operations and thus indicate areas in which a producer may most improve his or her business.
