Book excerpt: William Revelli stated that perhaps one of the greatest weaknesses of our school band programs is that, for the majority of the students, active participation ceases upon the day of graduation from our high schools. Music educators should strive to motivate all students, regardless of degree path, toward lifelong music making. After high school, many students do not pursue music as a major yet decide to participate in a collegiate ensemble. It seems relevant to investigate the influences behind these choices. The purpose of this study was to determine what factors contributed to a non-music major's decision to participate in their collegiate band(s). An email soliciting student participation was sent to college band directors through the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA). The 17-question electronic survey included an open-ended response, a 7-point Likert-type scale investigating factors that influenced their decision to participate in a collegiate ensemble, and demographic information. Participants (N = 2,933) were students enrolled at 95 colleges and universities from 37 states. The majority (56%) were enrolled in more than one type of band. Results from the open-ended response revealed that an overall love/enjoyment for music was the primary reason for continued music participation. Likert-type scale analysis showed a compilation of factors ultimately led to student participation. The factors with the highest mean scores, representing the strongest influences, were love/enjoyment for music, the overall high school band experience, self-pride of being a member of the college band, social aspects involved with the college band, and quality and reputation of the college band. Students enrolled in athletic bands (marching and pep bands) displayed higher motivation to continue playing from social influences whereas students enrolled in concert ensembles (concert and jazz bands) appeared to be more influenced by musical aspects. Findings from this study suggest that participants' intrinsically motivated desire to continue playing is largely due to the enjoyment started in beginning band, and continued throughout high school. Further research may investigate specific aspects related to the high school experience that promote continued music performance as well as techniques directors of all levels can utilize to encourage lifelong music making.

They also noted that only 14.6% of participants reported partaking in regular music-making activities.” Through interviews of non-music major students who participate in collegiate marching bands and collegiate marching band directors, this study will answer the following questions: What factors influence non-music majors’ participation in collegiate marching bands? What recruitment tools do collegiate marching band directors use to attract and retain non-music major students in their ensemble? By answering these questions, the importance of the non-music majors’ participation in collegiate marching bands will be made apparent, and tips to recruit and retain those students.

Book excerpt: Retention rates for college marching band participation show a considerable number of students choose to drop out every year, with a range of 17.6 % attrition at smaller universities and 42% in larger Division 1 Programs (“A recent series of studies”, 2014; Townsend, 2004). Unfortunately, most students leave after only participating for one year (Patzig, 1983; Fuller, 1995; Townsend, 2004) suggesting the transition from first to second year membership is especially consequential to the goal of improving retention. In this study, the University of Alabama's Million Dollar Band (MDB) was examined. The MDB is widely known regionally and arguably throughout the United States for its close involvement to its storied football program and for excellence in music performances across many decades. Unfortunately, at the time of this study, the first-year member retention rate for the MDB was only 66.4. To determine those factors that may improve retention, all first-year members of the MDB (N=144) in 2015 were invited to complete a survey two months before registering for fall 2017 classes. Participants' (n=78, 54.2%) provided basic demographic information (e.g., gender information, in-state/out-of-state status, instrument, degree/major, scholarship information), current participation in other band ensembles (e.g., pep band, concert band), and indicated their intention to re-audition for the MDB. The questionnaire included 22 items: evaluating each factor with a 5-point Likert-scale: (1) not influential, (2) somewhat not influential, (3) undecided, (4) somewhat influential, and (5) influential. Participants were also asked to share three items they enjoyed the most and least during the marching band season; these were read by independent evaluators and themes were identified. Additional questions asked whether first-year members would recommend joining the MDB to their peers and whether they agreed to participate in a concert band during the spring 2016 semester to “guarantee membership” and thereby avoid having to re-audition for the 2016 MDB. Participants' responses were classified into four factors that influenced their intended decision to return for a second year: time requirements, degree responsibilities, performance enjoyment and financial opportunities. Common ideas emerging from participants' open-ended responses to items enjoyed were social, travel, performance, pride, and game day, while items they did not enjoy were time-commitments, number of rehearsals, external factors, leadership, and musical selections. Recommendations for future research and implications for college marching bands were addressed.

An ex post facto design was employed to determine the effects of recruitment and retention practices within middle school, high school, and collegiate instrumental ensembles. I surveyed students currently participating in college band ensembles who had participated in middle and high school band as part of their past school musical training. A survey was developed and distributed to four instrumental music ensembles: Buckeye Philharmonic, Symphonic Band, University Band, and Marching Band. The survey focused on the reasons for initial participation, participation in middle school, high school, and college, as well as why these participants considered dropping out of their respective ensembles. Data suggests that participation or non-participation in musical ensembles were influenced by factors such as (a) music major/non-music major participation, (b) current ensemble, (c) family support, (d) social reasons and (e) competence beliefs. Findings imply that competence beliefs are fragile in the early stages, but participants, particularly music majors, may center parts of their identity around music. Music majors valued musical and social factors more than non-music majors. In addition, there were significant differences in reasons for participation based on ensemble, particularly the Buckeye Philharmonic and Marching Band.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purposes of this study were to describe the ethos of individual performance development (EIPD) for music majors in selected American colleges and universities who played wind and percussion instruments, to compare the EIPD between small and large academic institutions, and to compare the EIPD between students who projected that their primary professional activity would be performing on their instrument and other music majors. EIPD was a researcher-designed multivariate construct, adapted from a variable set for an individual learning ethos at institutions of higher education (Jørgensen, 2002). EIPD included the categories of Practice Quantity, Self-Regulated Learning Characteristics, Motivation Factors, Ancillary Music Activities, and Non-Music Effects. EIPD variables were measured with student ratings on a researcher-designed questionnaire, which was distributed to music majors enrolled in concert wind bands at 31 American colleges/universities. There were 291 participants.Data were first analyzed to determine means and other descriptive data for the variables of EIPD. Second, a binomial logistic regression analysis compared the variables of EIPD between small (100 music majors) and large (200 music majors) institutions. Even though large institutions had higher percentages of bachelor of music degree-seeking students and students who believed that achievement on their primary instrument was more important than any other college learning, only 5 out of 44 variables returned significant differences. Also, music majors at small institutions felt a stronger presence from friendly encouragement than they felt from peer competition [t(52) = -2.45, p = .02]. As a follow-up to these results, an alternate binomial logistic regression was run to see if the students who projected that their careers would primarily be in instrumental performance exhibited different results than the other music majors. Only 4 out of 44 variables returned significant differences, including 3 motivation variables that were more likely to occur in the "professional instrumental performance" group.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to identify and examine factors which influence freshmen at Pacific-10 Athletic Conference universities not to participate in their college band program after having actively participated in their high school band. The scope of this study was developed in order to investigate the problem of college band nonparticipation by first-year students at universities with undergraduate enrollments greater than 10,000. A questionnaire was developed and subsequently administered through band department contacts at eight Pacific-10 Conference institutions. Questionnaires were distributed during the academic years 1997-1998 and 1998-1999. Data was collected at the various campuses from courses which were determined to have a large number of freshmen. Contacts at each university were responsible for the disbursement and collection of all survey questionnaires. Descriptive statistics were developed in the examination of the data. The total sample population for the study was 296. The most significant finding of the study was that 93.6% of the sample population (n=277) responded that they had made the decision not to participate in a college band while still in high school or before entering college. Data also suggests that a university freshman's decision regarding nonparticipation was notably influenced by factors such as: (a) college course load, (b) declining interest in band, (c) course scheduling conflicts, and (d) work schedule conflicts. Findings further suggest that more than 60% of the subjects felt the possibility existed that they might still participate in a band at a later point in their undergraduate schooling. An insignificant degree of influence was found to exist regarding the following factors: (a) social activities such as participation in intramural sports or the Greek system, (b) instrument availability, and (c) the advice of students' parents or high school band director. Findings imply that high school and college band directors should work together to facilitate the perception among high school band members that continued musical growth through participation in a college or university band should be a natural and logical progression from high school and an essential facet of their collegiate experience.
