Book Synopsis Admission Factors Used to Determine Entry Into a Nursing Program Based on Student Success Indicators at a Public University by : Peter Tofani

This book was released on 2016 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study compared application data for an undergraduate nursing program at a public health science center university in the southeast. The study covered five years of application cohorts from 2009 to 2014 from admission through graduation. The application data analyzed two dependent variables to predict students likely to achieve success in the nursing program. These two variables to measures success were: the ability of the admitted student to successfully achieve graduation requirements; and those graduates that were able to pass the national nursing certification exam on the first attempt. The application data was assessed to determine if a relationship existed between the data used to select students for admission and the success outcomes from an undergraduate nursing program. The application data was analyzed using a logistic regression and decision tree model to explore the relationship between the variables. The scores provided by the faculty members' overall assessment of the entire application file was significant in three of the four logistic regression models and race was significant in the national certification logistic regression model. A similar finding resulted with scores provided by the faculty members' overall assessment of the entire application file placed as the first node in three of the four decision tree models, and race placed as the first node in the national certification exam decision tree model. The study found that the data provided by faculty members in the admission process yielded results with the highest predictability related to student success in a nursing program.
Book Synopsis Academic Factors that Contribute to Pre-licensure Nursing Student Persistence by : Cecilia Flores
Download or read book Academic Factors that Contribute to Pre-licensure Nursing Student Persistence written by Cecilia Flores and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for registered nurses is expected to grow exponentially in the next decade. As nurses retire and more Americans access the healthcare system, more than 400,000 nurses will be needed nationally (Auerbach, Buerhaus, &Staiger, 2011). Based on projections, by 2020, approximately 25,000 nursing students will need to graduate to the meet the state's need for nurses; in 2013, slightly more than 11, 000 candidates took NCLEX after successfully completing their nursing program (Texas Board of Nursing, 2014). Currently 70% of students admitted to a nursing program in Texas do not persist and graduate (Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board [THECB], 2006). To meet the increasing demand for nurses, identifying the essential academic supports that nursing students need to persist and graduate may increase the number of practicing nurses. A 14-item academic support tool was created to examine the association of academic support and pre-licensure nursing student persistence. Texas program deans and directors self-reported the academic support available to nursing students and their persistence rate in this descriptive correlational study. A persistence benchmark of 85% was set by the THECB (2006). Three types of support were evaluated: institutional support, pre-program support, and program support. Introductory courses that taught study skills and critical thinking skills, specialized lab that assisted with math skills, and the use of academic advisors prior to nursing school admission, as well as nursing faculty whose workload was student persistence in nursing school were associated with persistence. Conversely, when programs offered courses that taught test taking skills prior to nursing school and provided test prep sessions during nursing school, students were less likely to persist and graduate. Academic support contributed to nursing student persistence; interpretation of findings; implications for nursing education; and recommendations for future studies were reported.
Book Synopsis Admission Variables as a Predictor of First Semester Student Success by : Linda Lisa Esper
Download or read book Admission Variables as a Predictor of First Semester Student Success written by Linda Lisa Esper and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current national shortage of practicing registered nurses is exacerbated by an accompanying shortage of nurse educators, which limits program enrollments in Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) programs. Relatively low available enrollment in nursing programs is coupled with a national first year retention rate of 64% (National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission [NLNAC], 2008), which leaves ADN educational leaders struggling to find improved ways to increase graduation rates through better identification of qualified applicants. This exploratory, action research study examined commonly used ADN admission criteria in order to identify those indicators which best predict students' first semester success at a small private northeastern United States college. The predictive ability of common ADN admission variables (TEAS scores in the areas of math, science, and English; overall TEAS score; age; gender; and math, science, and English course grades) was determined with regard to student success outcome variables (medication/math exam grade, Nurse Fundamental course grade, Nurse Health Assessment course grade, and Assessment Technology Institute [ATI] Nursing I Fundamental Content Mastery Series scores). Using an exploratory, action research design, data from 120 freshman nursing students were examined to assess the relative contributions of each of the predictor variables on forecasting students' first semester success. The study's methodology involved a simple correlation and regression analysis of the data. Selected Admission's variables were shown to be correlated to certain outcome variables. These Admission's variables included, the TEAS overall score, the last science course grade on admission (ACGs), the TEAS score in English, and the student's last earned English course on admission (ACGe). Only the TEAS total score showed correlation with success over a broad range of success score, i.e. ATIs, FUNg, and HAg. Overall, it was concluded that the ability of the admission variables to predict a specific score on student outcome assessment was weak. As a result of this study, the college's Admission office and nursing department will use the information to modify Admission's policies, develop pre-admission workshops, and continue to implement program initiatives to further support student success in an ADN nursing program. Further studies are warranted in order to assist other colleges in determining the level of academic qualifications most desirable in selecting students capable of success in their ADN nursing program.

Book Synopsis Exploring Education by : Alan R. Sadovnik
Download or read book Exploring Education written by Alan R. Sadovnik and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This much-anticipated fifth edition of Exploring Education offers an alternative to traditional foundations texts by combining a point-of-view analysis with primary source readings. Pre- and in-service teachers will find a solid introduction to the foundations disciplines -- history, philosophy, politics, and sociology of education -- and their application to educational issues, including school organization and teaching, curriculum and pedagogic practices, education and inequality, and school reform and improvement. This edition features substantive updates, including additions to the discussion of neo-liberal educational policy, recent debates about teacher diversity, updated data and research, and new selections of historical and contemporary readings. At a time when foundations of education are marginalized in many teacher education programs and teacher education reform pushes scripted approaches to curriculum and instruction, Exploring Education helps teachers to think critically about the "what" and "why" behind the most pressing issues in contemporary education.
