Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: .69, Uganda Management Institute (Uganda Management Institute), course: Masters in Business Administration Degree, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine factors affecting the performance of microfinance institutions in Uganda. Hofokam Limited (Ltd) was used as a case study. The objectives of the study were: to assess the effect of governance mechanisms on the performance of Hofokam Ltd, to establish the effect of management information systems on the performance of Hofokam ltd and to find out the extent to which finding affects the performance of it. The study sample was 48 and the findings showed that the selection criteria of the board members was not based on related experience and management remuneration was not competitive enough to attract and retain talent. The Management Information System didn't support real time reporting for decision making and branches were not networked with head office with the MIS, the microfinance institution had struggled to access reasonable capital with affordable terms since the donor funding stopped. The study drew conclusions that governance mechanisms greatly affected the performance of microfinance as they determine the direction of the MFI, MIS in its state had a relatively low impact on the performance of Hofokam Limited and that funding was not a critical success factor for MFI performance as compared to other factors. The study recommends that the selection of the Board should be to a large extent based on ones' professional experience, the MFI shouldn't commit all efforts to be regulated as it has not proved a success factor for many other MFIs, the MIS in use should be upgraded to enable linkage across the branches and head office rather than invest in a totally new software, the MFI should look at increasing the level of operational efficiency e

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 3.89, language: English, abstract: Microfinance promises to reduce poverty. To achieve this amazing objective Microfinance institutions have to become strong enough in financial performance because donor constancy is not a given. Thus the question is: In what extent the OCCSCO -specific, industry-specific (MFI) and macroeconomic factors that determine OCCSCO's financial performance from the period 2013-2017, By using OLS estimation method to measure the effect of internal and external factors that affect financial performance in terms of return on asset. The researcher used SPSS 20.0 version to analyze the data that was obtained from secondary sources. The study was based on a five years secondary data obtained from AEMFI Financial performance analysis report and MOFEC economic forum report for10 selected OCCSCO in Eastern Hararghe branch. Beside this the study used primary data analysis to solicit managers, accountants and customer service officers perception towards factors affecting financial performance of Oromia credit and saving share company in Eastern Hararghe Branch. Regarding the explanatory variables, operational efficiency, GDP and size which affect OCCSCO financial performance significantly. The outcome of the study shows that Age of microfinance institutions has a positive but statistically insignificant effect on their financial performance. The other explanatory variables which is Portfolio at risk>30, Gearing ratio, capital to asset ratio and Market concentration affect negatively and not significant. The Oromia regional state MFIs policy makers and managers should give high concern to the credit risk management, expense management and large MFIs size management and also the government and policy makers should work combining both poverty reduction and financial self- sufficiency of OCCSCO.

Book excerpt: This book examines the determinants of financial performance of microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Ghana and Uganda, against the backdrop of the public and academic debate over the financial and social implications of microfinance. In the absence of a conceptual model, the study chooses an inductive research approach with the objective of defining and developing a conceptual model with the capacity to explain, quantify, and compare the performance of MFIs. The research is particularly relevant in the African context where microloan interest rates regularly exceed 100% per annum and where the microfinance industry is lacking behind its global peers in regard to financial and social performance. Book excerpt: Microfinance contracts have proven able to secure high rates of loan repayment in the face of limited liability and information asymmetries, but high repayment rates have not translated easily into profits for most microbanks. Profitability, though, is at the heart of the promise that microfinance can deliver poverty reduction while not relying on ongoing subsidy. The authors examine why this promise remains unmet for most institutions. Using a data set with unusually high quality financial information on 124 institutions in 49 countries, they explore the patterns of profitability, loan repayment, and cost reduction. The authors find that institutional design and orientation matter substantially. Lenders that do not use group-based methods to overcome incentive problems experience weaker portfolio quality and lower profit rates when interest rates are raised substantially. For these individual-based lenders, one key to achieving profitability is investing more heavily in staff costs-a finding consistent with the economics of information but contrary to the conventional wisdom that profitability is largely a function of minimizing cost.

Book excerpt: In response to a clear need by low-income people to gain access to the full range of financial services including savings, a growing number of microfinance NGOs are seeking guidelines to transform from credit-focused microfinance organizations to regulated deposit-taking financial intermediaries. In response to this trend, this book presents a practical 'how-to' manual for MFIs to develop the capacity to become licensed and regulated to mobilize deposits from the public. 'Transforming Microfinance Institutions' provides guidelines for regulators to license and regulate microfinance providers, and for transforming MFIs to meet the demands of two major new stakeholders regulators and shareholders. As such, it focuses on developing the capacity of NGO MFIs to mobilize and intermediate voluntary savings. Drawing from worldwide experience, it outlines how to manage the transformation process and address major strategic and operational issues inherent in transformation including competitive positioning, business planning, accessing capital and shareholders, and how to 'transform' the MFI's human resources, financial management, MIS, internal controls, and branch operations. Case studies then provide examples of developing a new regulatory tier for microfinance, and how a Ugandan NGO transformed to become a licensed financial intermediary. This book will be invaluable to regulators and microfinance NGOs contemplating institutional transformation and will be of tremendous use to donors and technical support agencies supporting MFIs in their transformation.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Customer Relationship Management, CRM, grade: Commended, Bharathiar University (Tamil Nadu Institute of Urban Studies), course: Ph.D, language: English, abstract: The consumer attitude towards the various financial services products in the past was very passive and attracted less interest. But after the advent of technology and new forms of internet-based Banking, have had a great impact on consumer's attitudes and how they purchase financial products and services. The financial services providers are not certain of retaining their customers and have resorted to the traditional technique of the relationships building and loyalty practices. This makes it all the more important for financial services providers to understand the attitudes of customers and influence their decision-making and behavioral patterns. Consumers tend to search for product information either explicitly or implicitly depend on the attention, perception and other environmental cues related to information on the product. In literature, the choice of a mortgage is conceptualized as a function of value, prepayment, points, type of mortgage sought, etc. A prerequisite for consumers to make good decisions is to have all the relevant information therefore Banks must adopt a mandatory disclosure policy to facilitate this information search.

Book excerpt: Modern companies are subject to increasing pressures to conduct their business in an environmentally responsible manner due to social and environmental problems. Management of sustainable performance is one of the phenomena faced by the current business environment and, in particular, management corporations. The focus of management on profitability remains the main objective of any company, but it must also take into account the sustainability of social, economic, and environmental aspects. Under these circumstances, managerial decisions need to be adjusted and strongly substantiated, considering the information required by internal and external stakeholders, including financial reporting. The information requirements of customers and other stakeholders are steadily increasing, and some companies face certain problems in implementing the concept of sustainability and environmental reporting. CSR and Management Accounting Challenges in a Time of Global Crises is a comprehensive reference source that explores various theoretical and practical approaches of management accounting and its impact in the 21st century and investigates new accounting and financial approaches where economic and social aspects become mutually supportive to enhance their impact on community development. Covering topics such as CSR reporting, sustainability, and greenwashing, this book is an essential resource for academicians, specialty organizations, chief financial officers (CFOs), financial controllers, business analysts, financial planning and analysis (FP&A) analysts, budgeting managers, students, researchers, and business environment managers and specialists.

This book was released on 2010-12-29 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies have shown that the negative effects of credit market inefficiencies are most felt by smaller firms. Therefore, in countries such as Uganda, where micro enterprises are at the bottom of the economic pyramid, moral hazard and adverse selection severely affect their ability to access formal credit hence limiting their growth potential. Microfinance has been heralded for its use of innovative lending methods to improve access to credit. The last decade has witnessed an unprecedented increase in the outreach of micro lending institutions and the development of financial products suited to the needs of the economically active poor, who often, are unable to obtain credit from mainstream financial institutions. This book analyzes the law and economics theories on access to credit and enterprise finance and based on case studies in Uganda, presents empirical findings of the promise and limits of contractual innovations in micro credit.
