Book excerpt: Black students continue to be underrepresented at Predominantly White Institutions and persist at lower rates than their White counterparts. Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) member institutions with evangelical missions continue to struggle more than other private institutions with racial inequality as it relates to retention and graduation rates. The overall purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand the experiences of Black students at a CCCU institution. Specific objectives were to better understand how Black students experience campus, academic, and religious life at a CCCU institution. Using a descriptive case-study approach, I interviewed 22 participants at Private Christian University (PCU) and analyzed the data using In Vivo Coding, constant comparison, and thematic analysis. The findings indicate that Black students at PCU face a number of academic and social challenges. They rely on relationships with peers, faculty, and staff to help navigate those challenges and in many cases are able to look back on them in constructive and positive ways. Findings also suggest formal religious activities that are required and presumed by the institution to be nurturing are having the opposite effect for some Black students at PCU. I also found that Black students are turned off by the style of worship and in particular the type of music that is central to the religious services. Many of them cope with disliking the campus convocations by seeking other religious outlets on campus and in the local community. Understanding the experiences of Black students at an individual CCCU institution may provide insights for improving retention and graduation rates for Black. A better understanding of how Black students experience this CCCU institution can also help practitioners create programs and initiatives that improve their experience. Educating faculty and staff regarding the importance of relationships with Black students should be a priority.

First, they must respond to the changing demographics of the nation. The minority population will most likely be in the majority by the next U.S. census (Humes, Jones, & Ramirez, 2011). According to information from the U.S. Census in 2010, 308.7 million people reside in the United States (Humes et al., 2011). This is an increase of 9.7% since 2000, and this increase is attributed to the growing population of those who do not identify as White (Humes et al., 2011). With this change, there will be an increase in diverse students in our schools and postsecondary institutions.While Christian colleges should have made more progress on diversity-related efforts, such as enrolling more diverse students and increasing faculty diversity, the fact is that most have not--many have failed to recognize how diversity benefits students and the institution. This starts with an awareness of diversity and diversity objectives. The problems are many, but one key element may be that they do not have a ready-made roadmap to follow to make diversity an explicit part of their mission and focus. This study will highlight two institutions within the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities that have made an explicit commitment to diversity. The study will focus on the processes employed and challenges faced by two universities that have been successful in establishing a commitment to diversity. The study followed a qualitative approach, and interviews were conducted with participants from two different institutions. The focus of the interviews was on the diversity statement, the roles of leaders in the change process, and the obstacles the institutions faced in becoming a more diverse community. Impacts of the diversity statement on faculty, curriculum, and leadership were also analyzed. The major themes in the findings of the study included: (a) the link between institutional mission and values in diversity efforts, (b) the roles leaders played in the change process, and (c) the role of diversity champions in creating change. The results offer recommendations to college presidents and chief diversity officers for how to create change in diversity efforts on campus.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study sought to explore the experiences of Black students enrolled at predominantly White Christian institutions and what they believe enabled them to graduate. The focus was on alumni who graduated from PWCIs within the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities network. This phenomenological study allowed eleven participants to share their experiences during their time as students enrolled at PWCIs and what they believe enabled them to successfully graduate. Through an analysis of the data, the researcher identified the following themes: faith, identity, race, faculty support, family support, and peer support. Findings in the data suggest graduates felt relationships with faculty, Black friends, family, faith, and self-preservation contributed to their graduation success. Participants described experiences with microaggressions, racism, isolation, and felt no sense of belonging to the Christian institutions they attended. To enhance Black student experiences, recommendations in this study include the need for PWCIs to reexamine their mission statements and commitments to all students as Christian institutions, increase hiring of Black faculty, and implement culturally responsive teaching methods. Additionally, recommendations include the need for PWCIs to administer institutional diversity climate surveys, create safe spaces for Black students, implement programs to support Black student identity development, and include Black students in planning programs designed to support their experiences. Ultimately, recommendations in this study require PWCIs to create an institutional culture of inclusion.

The average gap at CCCU institutions between "overall and Black graduation rates is more than 19%. This is greater than the gap at other private institutions" (Smith, 2009, p.80). While the six-year graduation rate for African-American students at private universities averages 51%, colleges and universities in the CCCU average only 36%. CCCU graduation rates are 9.5% lower than other private institutions due to CCCU affiliation alone. CCCU affiliation was the only variable to have a significantly more negative association with Black graduation rates than with overall graduation rates" (Smith, 2009, p.x). This study examined the experiences of African-American students within the context of Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) institutions. While previous research explored African-American graduation rates, the unique spiritual context of Christian colleges and institutions in the CCCU had not been adequately studied. The purpose of this research was to explore the perceptions of African-American students regarding their experiences at CCCU institutions in order to identify the barriers and hindrances encountered by these students in their pursuit of a degree. A qualitative, case-study methodology was utilized to conduct nine focus groups with African-American students at three CCCU institutions in the Western region. The sample was comprised of 51 African-American students who had completed at least four semesters at the institution. Themes unique to each school were identified and a cross-case analysis was conducted. The findings indicated the experiences of African-American students at CCCU institutions were similar to other predominantly White institutions without a spiritual affiliation. The unique context of the spiritual environment did not create an environment that promoted African-American student success and did not positively impact African-American students according to their expectations. The findings indicated there are aspects of the environment at CCCU institutions which can be improved to enhance the experiences of African-American students.
