Book excerpt: The positive and negative experiences of the World Economic Crisis should be used for recomposing the world's economic map. For many countries it is a sign for changing the economic model if the country wants to keep up with the new world trends. Republic of Macedonia is one of those countries. The inherited conditions and the required development of the economy suggest the need to introduce a so called holistic approach in the creation of the future economic model. In its basis, this model deals with the macroeconomic and financial politics as well as with the process of creating new jobs. The main drivers of that model should be small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The research will show why and how SME's should become spine of the future sustainable economic development. The expected results of implementation of such model are increase of the number of employees, export and country's GDP.

Book excerpt: Since the end of the Kosovo war in 1999, increasing attention has been paid to the problems of economic development and reconstruction in South-East Europe. In a context of limited resources, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have a key role to play in creating jobs and building a dynamic entrepreneurial economy. Small Enterprise Development In South-East Europe presents important findings from recent empirical research on key factors, which hinder sustainable SME growth in South-East Europe. Finance is identified as a critical barrier to growth, and the role of commercial banks, micro-finance institutions and credit cooperatives in assisting growth is addressed. Yet finance alone is not enough. A rebuilding of social capital, a reduction of the unofficial or grey economy, and the promotion of inter-firm networks and clusters are also of vital importance in promoting sustainable growth. The book concludes with critical analyses of SME policies in Albania, Croatia, and Macedonia, countries which hitherto have received little attention in the literature. Small Enterprise Development in South-East Europe will be of great interest to policy makers, business consultants, and academics and post-graduate students working on economic development and reconstruction in South-East Europe.

Book excerpt: This book analyses the financing problems of Greek small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), within a liberalized financial system and within an economic environment of fiscal and monetary constraints. Using recent data covering a ten-year period, the main aim of the research is to explain the interdependence between the situation of the banking sector generally and that of small and medium enterprises. The author argues that the reluctance of banks to lend to Greek companies because of the strict financing constraints, due to the national debt crisis, serves to exacerbate the cycle of economic recession. This factor seriously undermines the efforts of Greek companies to develop growth opportunities, and negatively affects their competitiveness as well as their ability to strengthen their market position. The author examines the supply and demand aspect of the problem: there is lower demand for lending due to the decline of demand for goods and services as well as a tightening of banks’credit standards, whilst on the supply side, the deteriorating financial situation of banks and their willingness to avoid increasing risk are important contributing factors. Finally, the author presents the main conclusions of the analyses carried out in the previous sections of the book and discusses some relevant recommendations for future research. Building on the extant literature, this book analyses the problem from the point of view of both businesses and the banking sector. The study is useful for scholars, businesses and policy decision makers who are interested in the problem of small and medium-sized enterprises financing.

Book excerpt: "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic intensifies underlying structural obstacles and systemic inefficiencies. However, it also provokes the accelerated adoption of innovations made possible by the already growing technological development, before being accompanied by necessary institutional and systemic adjustments. This leads to multidimensional crises, while also opening new socio-economic challenges and prospects globally. The Handbook of Research on Socio-Economic Sustainability in the Post-Pandemic Era engages global aspects of the crisis by means of standard and innovative economic policies at the national and international level. It confronts the challenges facing businesses and reveals models of effective transformations and strategies in the present circumstances. The book further investigates individual and collective societal challenges in light of sustaining our constantly upgrading humanitarian values in the 21st century. Covering topics such as fiscal adjustment measures, sustainable marketing, and state-society relations, this major reference work is a dynamic resource for government officials, sociologists, economists, business leaders, human resource managers, libraries, students and faculty of higher education, researchers, and academicians.

When employment levels are less than their maximum possible an economy is experiencing unemployment. If labour is employed, but not effectively used, the situation is called underemployment. The main problem when measuring unemployment accurately is that it is a difficult procedure because of the imperfect knowledge. Not all instances of unemployment are recorded, and records of unemployment may be inaccurate. Republic of Macedonia, as well as the other transitional economies, is facing the problem of unemployment and this is one of the main social problems that need to be resolved in future. Additionally, the recent global economic and financial crisis caused significant problems to the Macedonian economy in general, having an impact to the level of unemployment, as well. One of the main issues for sustainable economic growth and development is the reduction of unemployment, which leads to social equality and reduction of poverty. This paper is aimed to discuss the problem of the unemployed and to suggest management strategies and policies for overcoming this issue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macedonia is a small, landlocked Balkan country that bears the heavy weight of being a crossroad between the West and the East, ultimately becoming a melting pot with fragile national identity; a nascent and, at times breakable, democracy; and brittle political and economic systems, diversity of cultures and ethnicities. This book is about the place of Macedonian identity within the globalised world; it is about the weakened Macedonian political culture, often times influenced by ethnic identity; it is about telling the story of the Ottoman influence and cultural heritage; it is about basic human rights, such as abortion rights and their limits by law and tradition in Macedonian society; and it is about the modern kitsch brought about by the ruling elites, who erect statues of modern warriors and try to recreate the past identity of the nation. This book begins with an essay on the Republic of Macedonia and its recognition in the international community (1991-2015), written by Dr Ivanka Dodovska and Jana Ilieva. It then continues with a chapter on how the changes in society bring about changes in the personality by Dr Marijana Markovik and Dr Eleonora Serafimovska. Dr Ivo Slaus writes about the two simultaneous challenges faced by Macedonia in the globalised world. Dr Maria Pandevska illuminates the cultural history in Borders and Boundaries of an Urban Space: Kurshumli - Han in Üskup/Skopje. Dr Vesna Stankovic Pejnovic gives a critical analysis of Macedonias identity crisis. Dr Dragica Popovska focuses on the discursive forms of memory and on the visual forms of memory manifested in the public sphere, through publicly available symbols. Dr Vera Dimitrievska presents the results of a qualitative study of professionalism on abortion and contraceptive practices among healthcare professionals in Macedonia. Dr Tijana Peric Diligenski writes about the anti-corruption paradigm in Macedonia in light of the European Union accession process. Dr Emilija Stoimenova Canevska gives an overview of the latest developments in psychology and psychotherapy in Macedonia, and links them to the overall social development of the country. Last, but not least, Dr Goran Basic writes a provocative chapter called Macedonia An Unfinished State.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic and social progress requires a diverse ecosystem of firms that play complementary roles. Making It Big: Why Developing Countries Need More Large Firms constitutes one of the most up-to-date assessments of how large firms are created in low- and middle-income countries and their role in development. It argues that large firms advance a range of development objectives in ways that other firms do not: large firms are more likely to innovate, export, and offer training and are more likely to adopt international standards of quality, among other contributions. Their particularities are closely associated with productivity advantages and translate into improved outcomes not only for their owners but also for their workers and for smaller enterprises in their value chains. The challenge for economic development, however, is that production does not reach economic scale in low- and middle-income countries. Why are large firms scarcer in developing countries? Drawing on a rare set of data from public and private sources, as well as proprietary data from the International Finance Corporation and case studies, this book shows that large firms are often born large—or with the attributes of largeness. In other words, what is distinct about them is often in place from day one of their operations. To fill the “missing top†? of the firm-size distribution with additional large firms, governments should support the creation of such firms by opening markets to greater competition. In low-income countries, this objective can be achieved through simple policy reorientation, such as breaking oligopolies, removing unnecessary restrictions to international trade and investment, and establishing strong rules to prevent the abuse of market power. Governments should also strive to ensure that private actors have the skills, technology, intelligence, infrastructure, and finance they need to create large ventures. Additionally, they should actively work to spread the benefits from production at scale across the largest possible number of market participants. This book seeks to bring frontier thinking and evidence on the role and origins of large firms to a wide range of readers, including academics, development practitioners and policy makers.

Book excerpt: “The crisis has deeply impacted virtually every economy in the world, and although growth has returned, much progress in the fight against poverty has been lost. More difficult international conditions in the years to come will mean that developing countries will have to place even more emphasis on improving domestic economic conditions to achieve the kind of growth that can durably eradicate poverty. —Justin Yifu Lin, Chief Economist and Senior Vice President The World Bank 'Global Economic Prospects 2010: Crisis, Finance, and Growth' explores both the short- and medium-term impacts of the financial crisis on developing countries. Although global growth has resumed, the recovery is fragile, and unless business and consumer demand strengthen, the world economy could slow down again. Even if, as appears likely, a double-dip recession is avoided, the recovery is expected to be slow. High unemployment and widespread restructuring will continue to characterize the global economy for the next several years. Already, the crisis has provoked large-scale human suffering. Some 64 million more people around the world are expected to be living on less than a $1.25 per day by the end of 2010, and between 30,000 and 50,000 more infants may have died of malnutrition in 2009 in Sub-Saharan Africa, than would have been the case if the crisis had not occurred. Over the medium term, economic growth is expected to recover. But increased risk aversion, a necessary and desirable tightening of financial regulations in high-income countries, and measures to reduce the exposure of developing economies to external shocks are likely to make finance scarcer and more costly than it was during the boom period. As a result, just as the ample liquidity of the early 2000s prompted an investment boom and an acceleration in developing-country potential output, higher costs will likely yield a slowing in developing-country potential growth rates of between 0.2 and 0.7 percentage points, and as much as an 8 percent decline in potential output over the medium term. In the longer term, however, developing countries can more than offset the implications of more expensive international finance by reducing the cost of capital channeled through their domestic financial markets.
