The shift from the multilateral WTO negotiations to bilateral and regional Free Trade Agreements has been going on for some time, but it is bound to accelerate after the WTO Doha round of negotiations is now widely regarded as a failure. However, there is a particular regional angle to this topic as well. After concluding that further progress in the Doha round was unlikely, Pacific Rim nations recently have progressed with the negotiations of a greatly expanded Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement that includes industrialised economies and developed countries such as the United States, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, recently emerged economies such as Singapore, but also several developing countries in Asia and Latin America such as Malaysia and Vietnam. US and EU led efforts to conclude FTAs with Asia-Pacific nations are also bound to accelerate again, after a temporary slowdown in the negotiations following the change of government in the United States and the expiry of the US President’s fast-track negotiation authority. The book will provide an assessment of these dynamics in the world’s fastest growing region. It will look at the IP chapters from a legal perspective, but also put the developments into a socio-economic and political context. Many agreements in fact are concluded because of this context rather than for purely economic reasons or to achieve progress in fields like IP law. The structure of the book follows an outline that groups countries into interest alliances according to their respective IP priorities. This ranges from the driving forces of the EU, US and Japan, via Asia-Pacific resource-rich but IP poor economies such as Australia and New Zealand, recently emerged economies with strong IP systems such as Singapore and Korea to leading developing countries such as China and India and ‘second tier industrializing economies’ such as Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prisoners are in a grey area regarding library services. Prison libraries violate many tenets of librarianship, with the justification of maintaining order. The field is de-professionalized--many positions are filled by persons without degrees in library science, and corrections administrators often write policy for services. Critics cite the need to implement public library service models despite practical difficulties. This book investigates state, national and international policies on prison libraries, reviews literature on the topic and describes partnerships between prisons and public libraries. Results from a national survey and follow-up interviews are included, providing a full narrative of policy outcomes in U.S. prisons.

Book excerpt: "One of the best texts, if not the best text, for teaching undergraduate administration and management of criminal justice organizations. Its service quality approach is remarkable." —Emmanuel Amadi, Mississippi Valley State University Rethink management in criminal justice. Administration and Management in Criminal Justice: A Service Quality Approach, Third Edition emphasizes the proactive techniques for administration professionals by using a service quality lens to address administration and management concepts in all areas of the criminal justice system. Authors Jennifer M. Allen and Rajeev Sawhney encourage readers to consider the importance of providing high-quality and effective criminal justice services. Readers will develop skills for responding to their customers—other criminal justice professionals, offenders, victims, and the community—and learn how to respond to changing environmental factors. Readers will also learn to critique their own views of what constitutes management in this service sector, all with the goal of improving the effectiveness of the criminal justice system. New to the Third Edition: Examinations of current concerns and management trends in criminal justice agencies make readers aware of the types of issues they may face, such as workplace bullying, formal and informal leadership, inmate-staff relationships, fatal police shootings, and more. Increased discussions of a variety of important topics spark classroom debate around areas such as homeland security–era policing, procedural justice, key court personnel, and private security changes. Expanded coverage of technology in criminal justice helps readers see how technology such as cybercrime, electronic monitoring and other uses of technology in probation and parole, body-worn cameras, and police drones have had an impact on the discipline. Updated Career Highlight boxes demonstrate the latest data for each career presented. More than half the book has been updated with new case studies to offer readers current examples of theory being put into practice. Nine new In the News articles include topics such as Recent terrorist attacks Police shootings Funding for criminal justice agencies New technology, such as police drones and the use of GPS monitoring devices on sex offenders Cybercrime, cyberattacks, and identity theft Updated references, statistics, and data present readers with the latest trends in criminal justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published with the support of The New Zealand Law Foundation. As collapses and crises involving ecological systems, economic and financial management and international governance increase, the need for bold alternatives to traditional economic and legal responses has never been more urgent. Property concepts are an important element in the interaction between humans and the natural environment. An important driver of ecological harm, property concepts can also become a powerful tool for responding to ecological problems in ways that have so far eluded both government regulators and markets. Going beyond the traditional critiques of liberal property theories, Property Rights and Sustainability takes on the challenge of fundamentally reconceptualising property rights and systems. It makes a significant contribution to rebalancing the legal framework in a way that recognises humanity as a member of a larger ecological order, the health and integrity of which is of primary importance to the long-term viability of our planet. Property Rights and Sustainability will be an indispensable resource for those interested in the relationship between property law and the environment, and the ways in which property law can be reshaped to respond to the ecological challenges of our time.
