This book was released on 2005 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naming deficits are a major difficulty among patients with aphasia. The question has been raised whether treatment focusing on semantic cueing techniques better facilitates word retrieval, specifically noun versus verb retrieval, as compared to phonological cueing techniques. Verbs may be more difficult than nouns to retrieve because verb meanings vary more in context than do the meanings of nouns and rely more heavily on semantic contexts. The current investigation was designed to study the effects of two lexical retrieval treatments--semantic cueing techniques and phonological cueing techniques--on the retrieval of nouns and verbs for people with word retrieval difficulties secondary to aphasia. The levels in semantic cueing treatment theoretically strengthen semantic associations, whereas the levels in phonological cueing treatment facilitate phonological associations as they relate to noun and verb retrieval. Since evidence supports the theory that verbs are more dependent on semantic contexts than are nouns, it is hypothesized that semantic cueing techniques will have a greater increase of verb retrieval as compared to phonological cueing techniques. This relationship between noun and verb retrieval was investigated by having subjects with aphasia name 30 pictures (both nouns and verbs) with semantic cueing, phonological cueing, and no cueing. Results indicated that nouns were retrieved more than verbs. Verbs, however, had a greater increase in retrieval when given a cue. Semantic cueing did not significantly increase verb retrieval.

Book Synopsis The Facilitative Effects of Drawing and Gesturing on Word Retrieval for People with Aphasia by : Morgan Elaine Enright
Download or read book The Facilitative Effects of Drawing and Gesturing on Word Retrieval for People with Aphasia written by Morgan Elaine Enright and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to verbally communicate successfully, people need the ability to retrieve a desired word. However, the inability to do this, called "anomia," is a common impairment for people with aphasia, and frequently persists into the chronic stage of recovery. Strategies that facilitate verbal expression may reduce or compensate for instances of anomia. Verbal strategies, such as Semantic Feature Analysis (SFA) have been researched extensively and shown to be effective. Nonverbal strategies, such as drawing and gesture, have research on their effects as a substitution for verbalization, but less on their facilitative effects. However, the research suggests they may work in a similar manner to verbal approaches, by activating semantic networks. Thus, the facilitative effects of nonverbal strategies should be explored further. The aim of this experiment was to determine the facilitative effects of drawing and gesturing during a picture naming task in one participant with chronic aphasia. Results revealed that all conditions evaluated, drawing, gesture, and wait (control), produced improvements in the picture naming task. However, contrary to expectations, the facilitated conditions (i.e. drawing and gesture) did not create more effects than the unfacilitated condition (i.e. wait). This finding may indicate the benefits of a factor common to all conditions. Further results of this study and directions for future research are discussed.
Download or read book Anomia written by Matti Laine and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naming is a fundamental aspect of language. Word-finding deficit, anomia, is the most common symptom of language dysfunction occurring after brain damage. Besides its practical importance, anomia gives a fascinating view on the inner workings of language in the brain. There has been significant progress in the study of anomia in recent years, including advances in neuroimaging research and in psycholinguistic modelling. Written by two internationally known researchers in the field, this book provides a broad, integrated overview of current research on anomia. Beginning with an overview of psycholinguistic research on normal word retrieval as well as the influential cognitive models of naming, the book goes on to review the major forms of anomia. Neuroanatomical aspects, clinical assessment, and therapeutic approaches are reviewed and evaluated. Anomia: Theoretical and Clinical Aspects gives a thorough and up-to-date examination of the research and treatment of naming disorders in neurological patients. It covers both theory and practice and provides invaluable reading for researchers and practitioners in speech and language disorders, neuropsychology and neurology, as well for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students in the field.

Book Synopsis Connecting Language and Art by : Adrienne Yorinks
Download or read book Connecting Language and Art written by Adrienne Yorinks and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Connecting Language and Art" is an important tool for adults who need to work speech and language skills due to stroke or other brain traumas. It is a functional speech and language workbook created for individuals to use alone or with a caregiver. Aphasia, a language disorder caused by injury or deterioration to the brain's language center, can have a devastating impact on an individual. The loss of effective communication makes many daily tasks difficult. Incorporating art and creativity with specific speech and language tasks is a sophisticated approach for increasing word retrieval and functional communication. It also taps into different areas of the brain which allows the individual or the individual and caretaker to see where there are strengths and weaknesses. Strengths can be built on and weaknesses can be improved building confidence. This book was created to fill a void in the marketplace. Connie Guarneri, a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and Adrienne Yorinks, an award-winning artist met in 2013 when Adrienne's mom was afflicted with Aphasia due to a stroke. This workbook was designed specifically to address this important problem. Their collaboration, "Connecting Language and Art" seeks to provide an interesting and fun workbook while facilitating speech and language recovery. Each task presented is in conjunction with standard speech therapy practices. The unique incorporation of art allows individuals with Aphasia to be creative while stimulating the brain for recovery.
