Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, grade: 10, course: M.Tech-ECE, language: English, abstract: Images containing faces are essential to intelligent vision-based human computer interaction, and research efforts in face processing include face recognition, face tracking, pose estimation, and expression recognition. The rapidly expanding research in face processing is based on the premise that information about a user's identity, state, and intent can be extracted from images and that computers can then react accordingly, e.g., by knowing person's identity, person may be authenticated to utilize a particular service or not. A first step of any face processing system is registering the locations in images where faces are present. The local binary pattern is a simple yet very efficient texture operator which labels the pixels of an image by thresholding the neighborhood of each pixel and considers the result as a binary number. The LBP method can be seen as a unifying approach to the traditionally divergent statistical and structural models of texture analysis. Perhaps the most important property of the LBP operator in real-world applications is its invariance against monotonic gray level changes caused, e.g., by illumination variations. Another equally important is its computational simplicity, which makes it possible to analyze images in challenging real-time settings. The success of LBP in face description is due to the discriminative power and computational simplicity of the LBP operator, and the robustness of LBP to mono-tonic gray scale changes caused by, for example, illumination variations. The use of histograms as features also makes the LBP approach robust to face misalignment and pose variations. For these reasons, the LBP methodology has already attained an established position in face analysis research. Because finding an efficient spatiotemporal representation for face analysis from videos is challenging,

Book excerpt: Face recognition become very interesting topic of research because of lot of unsolved parameters. From past few decades number of researchers work on the topic to solve the problem of face recognition but still successful face recognition system is not yet implemented hence we proposed face recognition algorithm that match face matrix. As discuss face is nothing but a matrix so using MATLAB software we do matrix manipulation and try to find best possible features for face recognition. In law enforcement and lot of commercial applications, such as in the area of access control systems, national identity, video surveillance, user authentication and retrieval of identity from a data base for criminal investigations face recognition play very important roll but due to challenging problem in real time applications it is not so user friendly. We take look on many unsolved parameters, such as face illumination, expression, pose, scale, low resolution, partial face (occlusion) and other environmental conditions, night video footage and day video footage. However, different pose and occlusion remains as major challenges in face recognition and these two problems affect the performance of face recognition in access control, authentication, and surveillance applications. To meet these challenges, the present study proposed a face recognition system using the analytical approach in which centre of two eye i.e. forehead used for feature extraction. In existing methods of analytical face recognition systems, features like eyes, nose, mouth where used as feature point but in proposed system we used forehead region maximum face recognition rate is 80% using Lab view software. In proposed analytical approach of face recognition, no any work has been done using above mention features but by using different features very little work had done.In literature study maximum recognition rate of analytical, holistic and hybrid approach is below 84% using different face database. In proposed SKM forehead feature work enhancement in recognition rates to 86% and require less time and also solve two big challenges half occlusion and different pose.Facial recognition system is a most useful computer application or device that can identify individuals based on their unique facial characteristics. Unlike many other biometric identification methods (e.g., fingerprints, voiceprint, speech), this can be advantageous in clean environments, for surveillance or tracking, and in automation systems. Because the system keeps a reference model of the individual, and captures their image for identification. They may also be more error-prone when identifying individuals, due to the fairly recent development of the technology. As we know lot of literature available on websites, books, journal etc, we consider international and national paper survey for primary source of data. Various algorithm studies is done from this information collected analysis will be done using various parameters to achieve the basic objective. Study of most popular appearance based face recognition projection methods and detailed descriptions of each module are studied. Our ID cards, passwords can be lost but face is connected part of our body so he/she can be verified with the help of their face. Recently face recognition is attracting much attention in the society of network multimedia information access & also for security purpose. We are providing an up-to-date critical survey of image - and video-based face recognition research. There are two things for us to write this thesis first is to provide an up-to-date review of the existing literature available on net, and the second is to offer some insights into the studies of machine recognition of faces using software. We conclude the thesis with proposed KSM algorithm that helps the government and private sector for security purpose.

We rapidly learn to identify, characterize and eventually distinguish those who are near and dear to us. We accept face recognition later as an everyday ability. We realize the complexity of the underlying problem only when we attempt to duplicate this skill in a computer vision system. This book is arranged around a number of clustered themes covering different aspects of face recognition. The first section on Statistical Face Models and Classifiers presents reviews and refinements of some well-known statistical models. The next section presents two articles exploring the use of Infrared imaging techniques and is followed by few articles devoted to refinements of classical methods. New approaches to improve the robustness of face analysis techniques are followed by two articles dealing with real-time challenges in video sequences. A final article explores human perceptual issues of face recognition.

Book excerpt: "Face recognition is a rapidly advancing research topic due to the large number of applications that can benefit from it. Face recognition consists of determining whether a known face is present in an image and is typically composed of four distinct steps. These steps are face detection, face alignment, feature extraction, and face classification. The leading application for face recognition is video surveillance. The majority of current research in face recognition has focused on determining if a face is present in an image, and if so, which subject in a known database is the closest match. This thesis deals with face matching, which is a subset of face recognition, focusing on face identification, yet it is an area where little research has been done. The objective of face matching is to determine, in real-time, the degree of confidence to which a live subject matches a facial image. Applications for face matching include video surveillance, determination of identification credentials, computer-human interfaces, and communications security. The method proposed here employs principal component analysis to create a method of face matching which is both computationally efficient and accurate. This method is integrated into a real time system that is based upon a two camera setup. it is able to scan the room, detect faces, and zoom in for a high quality capture of the facial features. The image capture is used in a face matching process to determine if the person found is the desired target. The performance of the system is analyzed based upon the matching accuracy for 10 unique subjects"--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Face detection, because of its vast array of applications, is one of the most active research areas in computer vision. In this book, we review various approaches to face detection developed in the past decade, with more emphasis on boosting-based learning algorithms. We then present a series of algorithms that are empowered by the statistical view of boosting and the concept of multiple instance learning. We start by describing a boosting learning framework that is capable to handle billions of training examples. It differs from traditional bootstrapping schemes in that no intermediate thresholds need to be set during training, yet the total number of negative examples used for feature selection remains constant and focused (on the poor performing ones). A multiple instance pruning scheme is then adopted to set the intermediate thresholds after boosting learning. This algorithm generates detectors that are both fast and accurate. We then present two multiple instance learning schemes for face detection, multiple instance learning boosting (MILBoost) and winner-take-all multiple category boosting (WTA-McBoost). MILBoost addresses the uncertainty in accurately pinpointing the location of the object being detected, while WTA-McBoost addresses the uncertainty in determining the most appropriate subcategory label for multiview object detection. Both schemes can resolve the ambiguity of the labeling process and reduce outliers during training, which leads to improved detector performances. In many applications, a detector trained with generic data sets may not perform optimally in a new environment. We propose detection adaption, which is a promising solution for this problem. We present an adaptation scheme based on the Taylor expansion of the boosting learning objective function, and we propose to store the second order statistics of the generic training data for future adaptation. We show that with a small amount of labeled data in the new environment, the detector's performance can be greatly improved. We also present two interesting applications where boosting learning was applied successfully. The first application is face verification for filtering and ranking image/video search results on celebrities. We present boosted multi-task learning (MTL), yet another boosting learning algorithm that extends MILBoost with a graphical model. Since the available number of training images for each celebrity may be limited, learning individual classifiers for each person may cause overfitting. MTL jointly learns classifiers for multiple people by sharing a few boosting classifiers in order to avoid overfitting. The second application addresses the need of speaker detection in conference rooms. The goal is to find who is speaking, given a microphone array and a panoramic video of the room. We show that by combining audio and visual features in a boosting framework, we can determine the speaker's position very accurately. Finally, we offer our thoughts on future directions for face detection.
