Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to integrated optical waveguides for information technology and data communications. Integrated coverage ranges from advanced materials, fabrication, and characterization techniques to guidelines for design and simulation. A concluding chapter offers perspectives on likely future trends and challenges. The dramatic scaling down of feature sizes has driven exponential improvements in semiconductor productivity and performance in the past several decades. However, with the potential of gigascale integration, size reduction is approaching a physical limitation due to the negative impact on resistance and inductance of metal interconnects with current copper-trace based technology. Integrated optics provides a potentially lower-cost, higher performance alternative to electronics in optical communication systems. Optical interconnects, in which light can be generated, guided, modulated, amplified, and detected, can provide greater bandwidth, lower power consumption, decreased interconnect delays, resistance to electromagnetic interference, and reduced crosstalk when integrated into standard electronic circuits. Integrated waveguide optics represents a truly multidisciplinary field of science and engineering, with continued growth requiring new developments in modeling, further advances in materials science, and innovations in integration platforms. In addition, the processing and fabrication of these new devices must be optimized in conjunction with the development of accurate and precise characterization and testing methods. Students and professionals in materials science and engineering will find Advanced Materials for Integrated Optical Waveguides to be an invaluable reference for meeting these research and development goals.

Book excerpt: This research was an investigation into the suitability of a recently developed polymer, polyphenylene, as a material for integrated optical circuits (IOCs). Polymers show great promise in the area of IOCs because of material processing advantages, compatibility with most existing integrated circuit technology, and relatively strong nonlinear optical characteristics. This thesis contains an overview of: dielectric waveguides, linear and nonlinear directional coupler theory; various models useful in the design and analysis of optical waveguides; the fabrication of three different waveguide designs; the experimental apparatus and procedure used to optically characterize the waveguides; and the experimental results of the characterization. Waveguiding of near infrared light through polyphenylene, in both a slab waveguide and strip-loaded guides, was observed for the first time in this polymer. Coupling of light between guides of a multi-channel directional coupler was also observed. No definitive conclusions concerning nonlinear effects are possible due to the non-identical, multi-channel nature of the fabricated waveguides. The results of this research indicate that polyphenylene is a candidate for use in IOCs and that the polymer should be the topic of further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the principles of non-linear integrated optics. The first objective is to provide the reader with a thorough understanding of integrated optics so that they may be able to develop the theoretical and experimental tools to study and control the linear and non-linear optical properties of waveguides. The potential use of these structures can then be determined in order to realize integrated optical components for light modulation and generation. The theoretical models are accompanied by experimental tools and their setting in order to characterize the studied phenomenon. The passage from theory to practice makes the comprehension of the physical phenomena simple and didactic. The book also gives a presentation of the industrial applications of the integrated optical components. The studied topics range from the theory of waveguides and the linear and non-linear optical characterization techniques to photonic crystals. This last field constitutes a major challenge of photonic technologies of the 21st century.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The optical properties of an ion-exchanged KTP wave guide depend on several important parameters. These include the refractive index difference of the substrate (KTiOPO4) and the wave guide (Rb(x)K(1-x)TiOP04), and the geometry of the wave guide, such as depth and width. In an ion-exchange wave guide, the depth is very different along different axes of the crystal. The Rb depth profiles in KTP have been studied in rubidium nitrate (RbNO3) melts with small concentrations of Ba(NO3) in the melt by using Rutherford Backscattering Spectrum (RBS). The data indicates that small Ba concentrations have a major effect on the incorporation of Rb and its distribution in the KTP. The results also show the effect of the Ba impurity in Rb ion-exchange is a function of the duration of exchange and varies substantially as the impurity concentration increase. An intense laser light in conjunction with a strong localized field is used to reverse the polarity of the ferroelectric domain at the location of a laser beam. The focused beam from an argon laser raises the temperature of a moving z-cut LiXbO3 plate close to the Curie point when a bipolar square wave electric field is applied. This technique has been used to construct a nonlinear periodic optical wave guide structure. This wave guide can be used for quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the detailed investigation of stress-induced birefringence in polymer optical waveguides and demonstrates an approach for the potential design of polarization-insensitive waveguide devices considering such stress-effects. To estimate the stresses accurately, it presents a process-modeling framework in the Finite Element analysis, which can incorporate important stress build-up processes, such as polymerization shrinkage, stress relaxation, and etching, over the entire history of the waveguide fabrication process. It also presents the characterization of the stress-optic and thermo-optic coefficients of polymers in thin film waveguide. Being generic in nature, the described approach enables the optimized design of various integrated optical devices from the standpoint of material systems, waveguide geometry, and process parameters. This book is expected to lay the groundwork for the researchers on the management of stress related problems in integrated optical devices and photonic packaging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light signals in optical waveguides can be used to transmit very large amounts of data quickly and largely without interference. In the industrial and infrastructural sectors, e.g. in the automotive and aerospace industries, the demand to further exploit this potential is therefore increasing. Which technologies can be used to effectively integrate systems that transmit data by means of light into existing components? This is a central question for current research. So far, there have been some technical limitations in this regard. For example, it is difficult to couple the signal of an optical waveguide to other optical waveguides without interruption. There is also a lack of suitable fabrication technologies for three-dimensional waveguides, as well as design and simulation environments for 3D opto-MID. This book addresses these and other challenges.

Book excerpt: Micromachining is used to fabricate three-dimensional microstructures and it is the foundation of a technology called Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS). Bulk micromachining and surface micromachining are two major categories (among others) in this field. This book presents advances in micromachining technology. For this, we have gathered review articles related to various techniques and methods of micro/nano fabrications, like focused ion beams, laser ablation, and several other specialized techniques, from esteemed researchers and scientists around the world. Each chapter gives a complete description of a specific micromachining method, design, associate analytical works, experimental set-up, and the final fabricated devices, followed by many references related to this field of research available in other literature. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of this technology, the collection of articles presented here can be used by scientists and researchers in the disciplines of engineering, materials sciences, physics, and chemistry.
