Book Synopsis F. W. Ferling's 48 Studies for Oboe Op. 31 by : Kostis Hassiotis
Download or read book F. W. Ferling's 48 Studies for Oboe Op. 31 written by Kostis Hassiotis and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first full-length scholarly study of F. W. Ferling's (1796-1874) 48 Studies for Oboe. It includes information concerning Ferling as a performer and composer, a detailed description of his known compositions and reference to the importance of the 48 Studies in modern instrumental training. The author views the piece in the context of the historical evolution of nineteenth-century didactic works, examines its most important editions, and identifies its first publisher and the date of its original publication. The critical edition and report are followed by a discussion on several performance practice issues based on both modern scholarship and nineteenth-century pedagogical material. This is a book intended for performers, teachers, students and scholars. By combining a scholarly editorial approach with a performer's insight, the author offers a fascinating critical perspective on the Studies. Most intriguing are the questions posed about whether (and which) didactic material might be performed, and about the tensions that may arise between a historically-informed approach to performance practice and the pedagogic value of such compositions.

Book Synopsis The Oboe by : Geoffrey Vernon Burgess
Download or read book The Oboe written by Geoffrey Vernon Burgess and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oboe, including its earlier forms the shawm and the hautboy, is an instrument with a long and rich history. In this book two distinguished oboist-musicologists trace that history from its beginnings to the present time, discussing how and why the oboe evolved, what music was written for it, and which players were prominent. Geoffrey Burgess and Bruce Haynes begin by describing the oboe’s prehistory and subsequent development out of the shawm in the mid-seventeenth century. They then examine later stages of the instrument, from the classical hautboy to the transition to a keyed oboe and eventually the Conservatoire-system oboe. The authors consider the instrument’s place in Romantic and Modernist music and analyze traditional and avant-garde developments after World War II. Noting the oboe’s appearance in paintings and other iconography, as well as in distinctive musical contexts, they examine what this reveals about the instrument’s social function in different eras. Throughout the book they discuss the great performers, from the pioneers of the seventeenth century to the traveling virtuosi of the eighteenth, the masters of the romantic period and the legends of the twentieth century such as Gillet, Goossens, Tabuteau, and Holliger. With its extensive illustrations, useful technical appendices, and discography, this is a comprehensive and authoritative volume that will be the essential companion for every woodwind student and performer.

Download or read book Human Security written by W.E. Blatz and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1966-12-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his lifetime, W.E. Blatz was so much occupied with the development of the University of Toronto’s Institute of Child Study that he was able to devote little time to writing. This is his first book to appear in twenty-one years, and his first complete exposition of his famous Theory of Security. The Theory of Security is radically different from the theories promulgated by Freudian psychologists. Whereas Freudian personality theory is based on the notion of “unconscious,” an entity that is only indirectly observable, the Theory of Security derives from the observation of the conscious state in all its manifestations. Dr. Blatz thus makes use of both empirical observations and the results of introspection, and, as might be expected, some of his conclusions run counter to those reached in much current psychological discussion. But proof of the forcible influence of the theory and its author may be found in the impressive number of books and articles already published by Dr. Blatz’s associates at the Institute of Child Study, applying the theory to the practical problems of psychological observation and therapy. It is fitting that the man whose work has generated so much fruitful research by others in this field should at last have set down in book form the fundamental principles that guided them.
