Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigration is even more hotly debated in Europe than in the United States. In this pivotal work of action and discourse analysis, Riva Kastoryano draws on extensive fieldwork--including interviews with politicians, immigrant leaders, and militants--to analyze interactions between states and immigrants in France and Germany. Making frequent comparisons to the United States, she delineates the role of states in constructing group identities and measures the impact of immigrant organization and mobilization on national identity. Kastoryano argues that states contribute directly and indirectly to the elaboration of immigrants' identity, in part by articulating the grounds on which their groups are granted legitimacy. Conversely, immigrant organizations demanding recognition often redefine national identity by reinforcing or modifying traditional sentiments. They use culture--national references in Germany and religion in France--to negotiate new political identities in ways that alter state composition and lead the state to negotiate its identity as well. Despite their different histories, Kastoryano finds that Germany, France, and the United States are converging in their policies toward immigration control and integration. All three have adopted similar tactics and made similar institutional adjustments in their efforts to reconcile differences while tending national integrity. The author builds her observations into a model of ''negotiations of identities'' useful to a broad cross-section of social scientists and policy specialists. She extends her analysis to consider how the European Union and transnational networks affect identities still negotiated at the national level. The result is a forward-thinking book that illuminates immigration from a new angle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is a scholarly biography of one of France's foremost political leaders. In a career which ran from the 1880s to the 1930s, one of the most formative periods of modern French history, Poincaré held the principal offices of state. He played crucial roles in France's entry into the Great War, the organisation of the war effort, the peace settlement, the reparations question, the occupation of the Ruhr and the reorganisation of French finances in the 1920s. His life and work is surrounded by controversy and myth, from 'Poincaré-la-guerre' to 'Poincaré-le-franc', which this book dissects. Using a host of new archival material, Professor Keiger explores the historiography of the man and his times and reveals, somewhat surprisingly, how animal rights and feminism could be as important to him as party politics and public finance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with some aspects of the future shape of the socio-economic order which would be founded on sustainability principles and the role of law therein, instead of on the prevailing capitalist economic order. The volume elaborates in particular on how innovation, a crucial aspect of free-market capitalism and its laws which constitute the current socio-economic order, could result in a more sustainable economy which, in turn, could lead to a more sustainable society. Moreover, the book analyses current developments in financial and economic law and evaluates their perks, risks and sustainability levels. The book contains no less than 11 chapters in which a variety of experts share their state-of-the-art insights regarding specific domains of socio-economic life. As such, the book deals with topics that are at present fully under debate in societies, such as student credit and the dangers it entails, cryptocurrencies and how the law tries to regulate this basically private law instrument, groups of companies under Belgian (company) law, a proposal for improving the international monetary system, and seeds and intellectual property rights, besides various other similar themes. The book forms the latest volume of the book series Economic and Financial Law & Policy – Shifting Insights & Values, and fully complies with the series’ goal of critically examining the legal methods and mechanisms that shape the global free markets and proposing alternatives to them. The book will hereby prove a valuable instrument for all researchers investigating these matters, besides policymakers and their advisers as well as all lawyers active in the field of economic law who look for a new perspective on the subject matters dealt with.

This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 924 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second revised edition of "Basic Documents on International" "Migration Law" brings together in a single volume the principal international conventions, declarations and instruments governing international migration in the form in which they stood as of early 1997. It contains the texts of these materials (or, where appropriate, extracts from the texts) together with information on the current state of ratification of each instrument and indications of any reservations, interpretative declarations or other statements made by the States parties. The book begins with excerpts from general multilateral texts, ranging from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to the Vienna Declaration of 1993. This is followed by instruments governing nationality and statelessness; materials relating to refugees; and texts emanating from the Council of Europe, the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, the European Community and Union and the International Labour Organization. The selection ends with a miscellany of texts of general significance, from the Inter-American Convention on Territorial Asylum of 1954 to the Convention of Human Rights concluded by the Commonwealth of Independent States in 1995. This publication is not intended for scholars alone, but also for practitioners in migration law. The texts are of practical significance for those concerned with the administration of the laws affecting migration and for representatives of those affected by these laws. It also serves as a companion to Richard Plender's monograph, "International Migration Law."

Book excerpt: This book examines the development of social democratic parties in Western Europe and suggests that instead of viewing a single model, in the past it was more accurate to consider a Northern and Southern European version. Each model varied in its characteristics, yet each retained an adherence to the same core values. But now a 'new' version of social democracy is emerging that is characterised by an advocacy of the tenets of neo-liberalism.
