Book Synopsis Latin American Debt and Adjustment by : Philip Brock
Download or read book Latin American Debt and Adjustment written by Philip Brock and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1989-04-04 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourteen papers presented in this volume are thought-provoking studies of the economic adjustment of Latin America to the difficult external environment of the 1980s. The debt problems of Latin America form the background for the analyses undertaken in this book. The articles go beyond description of the debt problems to offer insights on the more fundamental long-range problems facing policymakers in the region. Positive analyses into the nature of the adjustment process and insights into future institutional changes that could improve the functioning of the Latin American economies highlight the book.

Book Synopsis External Finance and Adjustment by : Karel Jansen
Download or read book External Finance and Adjustment written by Karel Jansen and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-12-13 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the impact of different sources of external finance on growth and development in different country contexts. An important finding of the study is that 'success' or 'failure' in the productive use of external and domestic financial resources cannot be explained on the basis of single factors such as external shocks or 'bad' versus 'sound' policies. Rather, they are outcomes of complex interactions between changes in exogenous factors (such as fluctuations in external finance and trade shocks), existing economic structures and the responses to shocks by domestic public and private sector agents. This finding also implies that there are no recipes in economic policy-making which are generally applicable; the 'best' policy has to be designed specifically for each country.
Book Synopsis Growth, Debt, and Sovereign Risk in a Small, Open Economy by : Jagdeep S. Bhandari
Download or read book Growth, Debt, and Sovereign Risk in a Small, Open Economy written by Jagdeep S. Bhandari and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1989 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper develops a macroeconomic model for a small, open, developing economy that borrows abroad - to study the dynamic interaction between debt and growth and the impacts of various policies and exogenous shocks on the rate of capital accumulation, the current account, and debt. Adjustment policies that increase productivity and efficient use of capital increase both growth and the stock of external debt - but the new level of debt may be sustainable in the long run.

Book Synopsis Energy Shocks and the World Economy by : Hui-Liang Tsai
Download or read book Energy Shocks and the World Economy written by Hui-Liang Tsai and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1989-09-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second of two works resulting from the author's extensive study of energy and the world economy, this book examines the international macroeconomic aspects of energy adjustment. Specifically, the author analyzes the ways in which economies adjust to external shocks, particularly the oil price shock and other energy market changes of the 1970s and early 1980s. He seeks to put the recessions experienced by industrial countries during the last decade in historical and analytical perspective, arguing that with the increasing openness of the world economy, the effects of the domestic policies of the industrial economies are increasingly relevant to the economic prospects of developing countries. He argues further that the apparent problems of the global economy during the post-1973 era--stagnant growth, inflation, the international debt crisis, and rising protectionism--are in part the result of a deterioration in the economic performance of industrial countries. The author begins by examining the effects of energy supply disturbances on the world economy. Subsequent chapters explore such issues as challenges to economic stabilization policy; the impact of external shocks on the economies of less developed countries, especially with regard to inflation and balance of payments problems; the relationship between world payment imbalances and recycling problems; and the link between energy markets and the international debt crisis. Finally, the author provides a theoretical framework for the international adjustment to energy shocks, focusing on flexible exchange-rate policy responses to exogenous shocks in the 1970s and the contribution of exchange rate misalignment to the international debt crisis of the 1980s.

Download or read book Debt And Disorder written by John Loxley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important and controversial challenges feeing the international financial and trading system is the need for developing countries to meet their high and rapidly growing external debt obligations and foreign exchange requirements. Developing countries have suffered major shocks in the form of global recession, high real interest rates, weakened terms of trade, and rising protectionism against their exports. The International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, Western central banks, and private financial institutions are seeking to avoid a collapse of the international financial system, and developing countries are seeking to grow through increased trade and access to external financing. Yet the fragility of current international trade and monetary systems seriously threatens the achievement of both sets of objectives. Professor Loxley integrates the structural adjustment experience of Third World countries with the policies, practices, and relationships of external financial agents in his discussion of options for reforming policy and of the limitations inherent in implementing these reforms.
Book Synopsis Global Waves of Debt by : M. Ayhan Kose
Download or read book Global Waves of Debt written by M. Ayhan Kose and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-03-03 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global economy has experienced four waves of rapid debt accumulation over the past 50 years. The first three debt waves ended with financial crises in many emerging market and developing economies. During the current wave, which started in 2010, the increase in debt in these economies has already been larger, faster, and broader-based than in the previous three waves. Current low interest rates mitigate some of the risks associated with high debt. However, emerging market and developing economies are also confronted by weak growth prospects, mounting vulnerabilities, and elevated global risks. A menu of policy options is available to reduce the likelihood that the current debt wave will end in crisis and, if crises do take place, will alleviate their impact.
