Book Synopsis Congregational Hermeneutics by : Andrew P. Rogers
Download or read book Congregational Hermeneutics written by Andrew P. Rogers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite many churches claiming that the Bible is highly significant for their doctrine and practice, questions about how we read the Bible are rarely made explicit. Based on ethnographic research in English churches, Congregational Hermeneutics explores this dissonance and moves beyond descriptions to propose ways of enriching hermeneutical practices in congregations. Characterised as hermeneutical apprenticeship, this is not just a matter of learning certain skills, but of cultivating hermeneutical virtues such as faithfulness, community, humility, confidence and courage. These virtues are given substance through looking at four broad themes that emerge from the analysis of congregational hermeneutics - tradition, practices, epistemology and mediation. Concluding with what hermeneutical apprenticeship might look like in practice, this book is constructively theological about what churches actually do with the Bible, and will be of interest to scholars, students and practitioners.

Book Synopsis Can We Still Believe in God? by : Craig L. Blomberg
Download or read book Can We Still Believe in God? written by Craig L. Blomberg and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People regularly give certain reasons for not believing in God, but they are much less aware of what the New Testament actually teaches. Although challenges to Christianity are perennial and have frequently been addressed, they are noticeably more common today and are currently of particular interest among evangelicals. Skeptics of Christianity often ask highly regarded biblical scholar and popular speaker Craig Blomberg how he can believe in a faith that seems so problematic. How can God allow evil and suffering? Isn't the Bible anti-women, anti-gay, and pro-slavery? Isn't the New Testament riddled with contradictions? What about the nature of hell, violence in Scripture, and prayer and predestination? Following the author's successful Can We Still Believe the Bible?, this succinct and readable book focuses on what the New Testament teaches about 10 key reasons people give for not believing in God.

The themes are diverse - from the renewal of Christology and the ecumenical dimensions of ecclesiology to human rights and emancipatory theology. Particular theologians, from Schleiermacher and Juengel in continental Europe, to Baillie and Lampe in the UK, are discussed. The preface and epilogue underline the urgent need for new and viable contemporary liberal theological voices to re-imagine the doctrinal, ethical and political implications of the Christian gospel. The final piece offers a progressive perspective on the sexuality debate in the churches.

Download or read book Belief in Media written by Mary E. Hess and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most works on media developments and Christianity approach the subject from the perspective of the implications of new media technologies for traditional Christian practices or how churches can use new media to further their goals. The common framework of analysis is a 'given reality' of traditional institutional Christianity and how it interacts with, affects and is affected by media. Media are treated as a separate cultural reality. This book presents, in an accessible form, the new directions that approach the interaction of media and religion from a cultural perspective, and illustrates these new directions by a number of international and intercultural case studies and explorations. Looking at how global media are constructing cultural forms, structures and processes, the authors show how these have become the life out of which individual and social meaning is created and practised. Examining how individuals create religious meaning by interacting with media of various kinds, crossing boundaries of traditional religious cultures and contemporary media cultures, this book reveals how Christian institutions are also defined in the process of living culturally within their broader media context.
