Sexual orientation is a controversial topic; thus it is often difficult for schools to establish and implement policies for this population. Issues faced by sexual minority adolescents in school, include bullying, physical and emotional abuse, issues with acceptance, and dealing with the stress of coming to terms with their own sexual identity. Eight college students identifying as sexual minorities were interviewed in a focus group format to reflect on their K-12 school experience. The information provided in the current study illuminates difficulties, dangers and mistreatment of sexual minority youth in the K-12 school setting. The participants discussed experiences such as bullying and negative school climate. The pervasive heteronormative view present in many school settings often promotes anxiety and adversity for adolescents identifying as sexual minorities. Suggestions for improving school climate, including educating staff and students on issues related to sexual and gender identity, promoting a positive school climate for all students and providing interventions for students who are impacted by negativity within the school setting, are discussed.

The effects of school climate and anti-bullying policy that seek to specifically provide protections for LGBTQ adolescents on the health outcomes of obesity and school violence have rarely been examined, and especially in tandem. Decreasing disparities in both these outcomes would help improve quality of life and decrease morbidity. Therefore, the overall objective of this dissertation is to help fill several gaps in the literature related to obesity, school violence, school climate, and state-level anti-bullying policy with SGM identity enumeration.

Book excerpt: For 20 years, GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) has worked to ensure safe schools for all students, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. For 10 of those years, GLSEN has been documenting the school experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth: the prevalence of anti-LGBT language and victimization, the effect that these experiences have on LGBT students' achievement and the utility of interventions to both lessen the negative effects of a hostile climate and promote a positive educational experience. In its 2009 survey, GLSEN's researchers examine the experiences of LGBT students with regard to indicators of negative school climate: (1) hearing biased remarks, including homophobic remarks, in school; (2) feeling unsafe in school because of personal characteristics, such as sexual orientation, gender expression or race/ethnicity; (3) missing classes or days of school because of safety reasons; and (4) experiences of harassment and assault in school. They also examine the possible negative effects of a hostile school climate on LGBT students' academic achievement, educational aspirations and psychological well-being. They explore the diverse nature of LGBT students' experiences by reporting on how these differ by students' personal and community characteristics. They also examine whether or not students report experiences of victimization to school officials or to family members and how these adults address the problem. In addition, they demonstrate the degree to which LGBT students have access to supportive resources in school, and they explore the possible benefits of these resources, including Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs), school harassment/assault policies, supportive school staff and curriculum that is inclusive of LGBT-related topics. Given that they now have 10 years of data, they examine changes over the past decade on both indicator. Results from the 2009 National School Climate Survey demonstrate the ways in which school-based supports, such as supportive staff, school harassment/assault policies and GSAs can positively affect LGBT students' school experiences. Furthermore, results show how comprehensive anti-bullying/harassment state laws can positively affect school climate for these students. Therefore, GLSEN's researchers recommend the following measures: (1) Advocate for comprehensive bullying/harassment legislation at the state and federal levels that specifically enumerates sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression as protected categories alongside others such as race, religion and disability; (2) Adopt and implement comprehensive bullying/harassment policies that specifically enumerate sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression in individual schools and districts, with clear and effective systems for reporting and addressing incidents that students experience; (3) Support student clubs, such as Gay-Straight Alliances, that provide support for LGBT students and address LGBT issues in education; (4) Provide training for school staff to improve rates of intervention and increase the number of supportive teachers and other staff available to students; and (5) Increase student access to appropriate and accurate information regarding LGBT people, history and events through inclusive curriculum and library and Internet resources. This is especially true for LGBTQ youth, who may be vulnerable as they grow and develop their sexual and gender identities while in schools. As such, specific school-based supports that mitigate the risks associated with discrimination and victimization have been shown to prevent negative outcomes for LGBTQ youth. LGBTQ-supportive policies, LGBTQ-inclusive curricula, and student-led clubs such as gender and sexuality alliances (GSAs) are particularly promising system-level interventions. However, existing research identifies several gaps in the application of these school-based supports, especially in middle schools. Primarily, many middle schools simply do not have any such supports in place or have only partial support available. Further, LGBTQ students often encounter barriers in using such supports, including stigma from peers and lack of knowledge about support availability. Thus, the present study examined the extent to which LGBTQ-supportive policies and LGBTQ-inclusive curricula were predictive of the presence of GSAs in New York State middle schools and what factors middle school administrators identified as supports and barriers to GSAs. Results of a logistic regression found that policy and curricula scores failed to predict the presence of a GSA at a statistically significant level. Administrators identified several factors influencing the presence of a GSA in their school, with a particular emphasis on student and faculty-related factors. Further analyses found inconsistent applications of supportive practices within the present sample. Such information may be useful in implementing systems change efforts to improve school climate and provide further resources for LGBTQ students."--Abstract

Book excerpt: The high prevalence of anti-LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning) bullying in U.S. schools is extreme and commonplace. LGBTQ students - and heterosexual students who are perceived to be gay - routinely experience discrimination and sexual prejudice. This mixed method study examined student perceptions of school climate, psychological sense of community (PSOC), and Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) in U.S. high schools. Data was analyzed to explore whether students from high schools with GSAs report a more positive general school climate, less homophobic school climate, and higher PSOC than students from high schools without GSAs, regardless of their sexual orientation. Quantitative findings of mean differences between participants from high schools with and without GSAs were nonsignificant, however, meaningful qualitative themes emerged that helped to contextualize these results. Qualitative analysis yielded themes related to geographical factors, values of those in power, GSA effectiveness, multiple PSOC, covert and overt homophobia, and bystander intervention. The mixed method findings provided a nuanced understanding of students' perceptions and experiences.
