Book excerpt: This study focused on the barriers implied towards Black women when they pursue leadership opportunities in the finance industry, because the demographic is obtaining secondary level degrees at a high level rate, they remain underrepresented in leadership roles. The organizational standards that may disqualify Black women from achieving promotional opportunities in the workplace were explored for insight into the workplace experiences of Black women to determine the barriers present in the work structure that may cause promotional obstacles for the demographic. Through conducting interviews, the experiences of Black women that have been promoted to leadership roles along with those who aspire were analyzed to determine in which ways the demographic encounters in the workplace implies a hindrance. The findings of this study were decoded into a set of recommendations that will be established for the use of Black women in the workplace so that they could manage to break through barricades to inclusion. The conceptual frameworks that worked to organize data into categories of work are the Black feminist theory, the expectation states theory, and the glass ceiling theory. The findings may help to advance the careers of Black women, because the recommendations provided to the demographic and organizational leaders propose strategies to promote inclusion, diversity, and advocacy for Black women in the workplace. The results of the study will contribute to addressing the need for social change within the employers and policy makers to eliminate the exclusion of Black women from leadership positions. Business practices may be improved through the recognition of any unethical strategies within the recruitment, hiring, and promotional standards of corporations that causes the remiss to a large pool of talent.

The implications from this study encourage organizations to decrease barriers in a coordinated manner to help Black women leaders achieve their highest levels of success.

The gender preference for senior level management, such as chief executive officers, vice presidents, senior vice presidents, and directors, has been that of men, with perceptions, biases, and stereotypes hindering advancement. The purpose of this study was to understand the reasons behind the underrepresentation of women as senior level leaders in the financial industry, as well as create or increase awareness for those within financial institutions that are responsible for the hiring and promotion of talent into these senior level positions.This study was conducted using a qualitative case study and a flexible research design. A total of 18 participants were interviewed, with each interview being one-on-one, semi-structured, consisting of 12 questions, and recorded utilizing a 32GB Voice Activated Recorder. These recordings were then transcribed and analyzed by NVivo Pro 12. The themes discovered were perception and its impact on leadership abilities, obstacles and methods to overcome them, the importance of networking and mentorship, and preventing gender inequality in the workplace. The findings revealed that gender impacts how one is perceived as a leader, with negative stereotypes and biases contributing to the barriers that women trying to ascend into senior leadership face. It was also revealed that women do not have access to the same networking and mentoring that men do and that organizations are contributing to workplace gender inequality when they fail to encourage growth opportunities for women. Firms can utilized these findings to create better inclusion standards in their policies, as well as hiring and promoting practices.

Book excerpt: There is a shortage of research examining the workplace experiences of African American millennial women and understanding the challenges faced in the advancement of their careers. This study investigated the role of age, race, and gender in the career advancement of African American millennial women (AAMW) and identified barriers affecting their career growth by using a qualitative phenomenological approach. The study used Intersectionality, Self-Efficacy, and Critical Race theories to examine the perspectives of AAMW and systemic barriers faced when seeking to advance their careers. The research questions of this phenomenological research study were focused on the lived experiences of African American millennial women in their childhood, educational, and workplace experiences. Data were collected from nine African American women, who identify as millennials born between 1980 and 1995, employed in the private sector in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. The study findings revealed that most participants believed that they were viewed in a negative light by their own peers and managers and cite their childhood experiences--in particular, the influence of observed female leadership during their upbringing--as having an impact on how they navigate the workplace. Practical recommendations include ensuring managers and supervisors of AAMW create opportunities for feedback and skill development for them to advance in the workplace, creating mentoring programs within organizations, and developing diversity and equity programming to improve workplace culture. Recommendations for African American millennial women include taking more ownership over their careers and seeking to learn what is required for promotion and advancement to ensure they are better positioned for career growth. Recommendations for further study include conducting a study with larger sample size of African American millennial women to understand the lived experiences of this workforce generation across employment industries and geographic location.
