Book excerpt: The present study observed the use of educational code-switching to the L1 (Arabic) among six Arabic EFL teachers at Majmaah University, in Saudi Arabia. It used an a priori set of purposes based on Creswell (2003) and derived categories to examine the linguistic, social, and class management purposes behind code-switching. The instrument consisted of two parts: a demographic questionnaire and an audio recorder used in conjunction with a classroom observation sheet. Although some studies have suggested that educational code-switching to the L1 in EFL classrooms is an unconscious act (e.g., Moghadam, Abdul Samad, & Shahraki, 2012), the present study's results concluded the reverse: that the use of educational code-switching could be interpreted as an intentional practice among teachers in EFL classrooms. The results provided a more in-depth understanding of the use of educational code-switching to the L1 (Arabic). They agreed with previous studies that have found such code-switching to be very common among EFL teachers. Although participants displayed different linguistic, social, and class management purposes, analysis of the data revealed that certain purposes were more common than others, with linguistic purposes being far more common than social, class management, or other purposes. The most common linguistic purpose was to explain new words, and for class management was to clarify activities/exercises. Only two purposes, to engage in small talk with students and to connect between sentences, could not be categorized into one of the three main types.

The present study investigated the beliefs and instructional practices with respect to the use of L1 by Iranian EFL high school teachers. In general, the findings showed that there existed no correlation between the teachers' beliefs and their instructional practices. However, this study found that in certain areas of teacher talk, there was a relationship between the stated beliefs and practices. Furthermore, there was a consistency between some micro- and macro- functions of language and the use of L1 by teachers. Reading this book can help non-native English teachers to reflect on their practices and beliefs regarding code-switching and the use of their learners' mother tongue in their English classes.

The chapters in the book use a variety of methods to address questions of power within educational institutions, from classrooms to the ministries of education. All the contributors are, or have been, teachers in the Middle East, from Egypt to Iran. Their nationalities range from Egyptian, to American, Canadian, British, Tunisian and Iranian. Ten of the contributors are women. All have conducted research and/or invited participation from among students and fellow teachers to explore issues of Critical Pedagogy from various perspectives. The question of physical space relates to power but is also related to linguistic space; student choice is not only related to linguistic space but also to motivation and thus empowerment. Changing teachersâ (TM) beliefs leads to empowerment for teachers, but also empowerment for students. Educational policy that recognizes social and personal identity reflects back to personal motivation. These studies meet and mesh, complement and sometimes take different viewpoints. To achieve the goals of the study, the researcher used two instruments after checking their validity and reliability and they were: classroom observations of four classes and students' questionnaire. The sample included 71 students at the Modern American School. The study focused on the following questions: 1) What are the functions of code switching used by secondary students in English classes at the Modern American School? 2) How does code switching affect the linguistic aspects of language varieties among secondary students in English classes at the Modern American School? Statistical analysis was conducted for the collected data. The percentages and means were calculated for the questionnaires, and the lesson observations were described in words. Results of the study revealed that some of the students use code switching in order to add a comic sense to his/her utterances, and therefore attract the interlocutors attention. Despite the fact that they study at an international school, they switch codes as it is hard to find proper equivalents especially to culturally loaded terms. Also, students switch codes in order to avoid misunderstanding. Students feel comfortable and confident in using more than one language within the same discourse. However, students believe that code switching is used haphazardly and unconsciously without paying attention to the syntactic rules that govern each language. The results elucidated different topics on which code switching takes place. The most prominent topics were religion and emotional issues. As shown in the results, there are a variety of functions of code switching in grade 12 classes that teach English. The most dominant function was using code switching"

Code-switching has brought considerable controversy over time, while students and teachers are among those affected by the outcome. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the opinions of educators on the use of code-switching in the classroom, based on the hypothesis that, teachers believe that student learning will improve in a classroom where code-switching is allowed. Furthermore, the study is designed to outline the psychosocial, and academic benefits of code-switching. A 26-question survey was administered where 121 Utah teacher responses were gathered and analyzed. Specifically, the survey inquired about the use of code-switching in a classroom among students or between students and their teachers. Results found a positive correlation between teachers’ belief that code-switching improves learning and their willingness to allow the use of code-switching in their classrooms.
