Book excerpt: Examining Lean processes in the context of the authors’ academic research in-progress, People, Process, & Culture: Lean Manufacturing in the Real World illustrates the impact of culture on the implementation of Lean Manufacturing (LM) across various geographic and cultural areas. It identifies cultural values, as examined against Lean manufacturing disciplines, and derives culturally based Lean Manufacturing (LM) values. It then assesses these cultural values in light of specific LM components, such as PULL systems and TPM, to demonstrate varying perspectives and applications. Illustrates global cultural influences on Lean implementation Uses academic research as the foundation of the material Examines the many Lean components currently in use around the world Building on the continued prominence of LM as the preferred operational approach, the book supplies time-tested advice to help you sort through the flood of information on Lean techniques and culture. It examines the numerous Lean components currently being deployed successfully around the world and identifies the limitations that can result from the varying interpretations and applications of Lean systems. Lean culture is all about Lean vision, mission, and values. This book not only identifies the Lean values required, but also supplies the understanding to integrate these values across all levels of your organization. The book will be especially helpful to international corporate managers working to demystify the sometimes hard-to-understand characteristics of Lean transformation.

Book excerpt: This book reports four structural equation models (SEM) for quantifying the relationship between the most important lean manufacturing (LM) practices applied to the manufacturing industry. The SEMs are evaluated using 220 responses to a survey applied to manufacturing companies applying LM principles in the production system and are related to: distribution and maintenance, production process and quality system, supply chain and quality, and an integrator model. The findings identify the most important activities for every LM practices and how they are related. These relationship' values will help administrators, managers, engineers to focus their efforts on these most important activities, facilitating the decision-making process.

Book excerpt: The paradigm of manufacturing is undergoing a major evolution throughout the world. The use of computers, the Internet and new challenges related to the Industry 4.0 have changed the way we engineer and manufacture products. Improving production with Lean Thinking is an evolution of a traditional approach in order to improve its processes to remain competitive in the global market. Lean Manufacturing is a multidimensional approach that embraces a wide variety of management practices in a unified system. These practices contain, quality systems, team work, and supplier management, among others. Nowadays, other practices have been adopted such as human factors and ergonomics. This book presents contributions of Lean Manufacturing applications in the world development and is intended to provide a comprehensive view of issues related to this area, with a specific focus on lean engineering principles; it is full of practical production examples of how Lean Thinking can be applied effectively to production systems. This work was conceptualized for an audience of graduate students mainly; however, it can also be consulted by engineers and company managers who seek state-of-the-art applications on Lean Manufacturing within a wide diversity of scenarios and conditions. The book, organized into 17 chapters, is intended to be an excellent source for dissemination of applied researches, lean concepts, and practices that have been successfully applied in the developing world domain. The book is also an excellent example of academy purpose with collaboration between different institutions from different countries that provide a global approach. Book excerpt: This book explains the implementation of just in time (JIT) production in an industrial context, while also highlighting the application of various, vital lean production tools. Shifting the trade-off between productivity and quality, the book discusses the preparation stages needed before implementing a JIT system. After an introduction to lean manufacturing and JIT, it introduces readers to the fundamentals and practice of Kaizen, paying special attention to lean manufacturing tools. The book demonstrates how to use the 5S approach (with the stages of Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke), Standardized Work, Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) and the Kanban system. In brief, the book provides an understanding of the processes associated with the application of these tools and highlights the benefits attained by companies that have implemented JIT systems. Throughout the book, a real-world case study is used to deepen readers' understanding of how lean manufacturing tools can be implemented. The book is ideally suited for executive courses in industrial engineering and management, but can also be used for upper undergraduate and graduate courses at universities.

Book excerpt: Subtractive precision manufacturing produces components for many industries: aerospace, astrospace, defense, biotech, medical device, and more. This paper discusses the effects of applying lean principles enhanced by digital archiving to subtractive precision manufacturing. An analysis of the subtractive manufacturing process and relevant subprocesses was conducted. Two opportunities for intervention, fixturing and cut plans, were identified. The introduction of lean, supported by a digital archive, at a representative company, led to significant efficiency gains. The paper concludes with discussing additional opportunities for future efficiency gains and/or research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic growth and rising levels of consumption in developing and developed countries has been observed as being deeply coupled with natural resource usage and material consumption. The increasing need for natural resources has raised concerns regarding issues such as resource scarcity, undesirable environmental impacts due to material extraction, primary production, and suboptimal product disposal, and social or political tensions. Product End-of-Life (EoL) options, such as reusing or recycling, attempt to limit or reduce the amount of waste sent to a landfill, providing strategic means to decouple the link between economic growth and resource usage. These EoL options have the potential to close material loops, further utilizing wastes as resources, reducing environmental impacts, conserving natural resources, reducing material prices, and providing job opportunities in developing countries. Remanufacturing, on the other hand, is a unique EoL option due to increasing the number of life cycles of a product before final disposal. First, recurring environmental benefits, such as emission and raw material extraction avoidance are obtained with each additional product life cycle. Second, individual resource efficiency yields increase through product remanufacture. Resource efficiency or, using more with less will continue to compound with each additional life cycle. Third, recirculating products decreases the demand and dependency for primary resource production, further closing the material loop and creating a more circular economy. In addition, remanufacturing can initiate more preferable EoL options such as recovery, recycling, and waste reduction. While remanufacturing offers numerous benefits, there is significant lack of literature and books covering the fundamentals of operations, technologies and business models. The proposed book will provide in-depth coverage of remanufacturing fundamentals and its strong link to circular economy and resource efficiency.

Book excerpt: Since 2003, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has changed its arrangements for providing logistics support for its Harrier and Tornado fast jet aircraft by rationalising the activity and location of its maintenance and repair services. The NAO report finds that these changes have reduced costs by a cumulative saving of £1.4 billion, and although availability of the aircraft temporarily declined during the transition period, availability targets for these fast jet aircraft are now being met. The MoD has applied new techniques, including introducing pulse lines, similar to a production line used in the motor car industry, which has led to improved productivity with fewer man-hours and less workspace and spares holdings. The MoD has also entered into new partnerships with industry which are managed by teams made up of contractors and military personnel situated at main RAF bases. The new arrangements are based on industry making available a specified number of aircraft or engines, rather than on the number of repairs they carry out or the number of spare parts they provide. The report identifies two significant risks that still remain, relating to: the provision of sufficient trained personnel to man the pulse lines for both jets; and the supply chain to ensure the timely supply of spare parts for both types of aircraft.
