Book excerpt: A Chemistry background prepares you for much more than just a laboratory career. The broad science education, analytical thinking, research methods, and other skills learned are of value to a wide variety of types of employers, and essential for a plethora of types of positions. Those who are interested in chemistry tend to have some similar personality traits and characteristics. By understanding your own personal values and interests, you can make informed decisions about what career paths to explore, and identify positions that match your needs. By expanding your options for not only what you will do, but also the environment in which you will do it, you can vastly increase the available employment opportunities, and increase the likelihood of finding enjoyable and lucrative employment. Each chapter in this book provides background information on a nontraditional field, including typical tasks, education or training requirements, and personal characteristics that make for a successful career in that field. Each chapter also contains detailed profiles of several chemists working in that field. The reader gets a true sense of what these people do on a daily basis, what in their background prepared them to move into this field, and what skills, personality, and knowledge are required to make a success of a career in this new field. Advice for people interested in moving into the field, and predictions for the future of that career, are also included from each person profiled. Career fields profiled include communication, chemical information, patents, sales and marketing, business development, regulatory affairs, public policy, safety, human resources, computers, and several others. Taken together, the career descriptions and real case histories provide a complete picture of each nontraditional career path, as well as valuable advice about how career transitions can be planned and successfully achieved by any chemist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women are making great strides regarding gender equality and equal pay in the workplace. But there are many high-paying, fast-growing fields that young women still may not be aware of as exciting career options. The U.S. Department of Labor classifies nontraditional careers for women as those in which 25 percent or less of the people working in that particular career are female. Educational requirements for these rewarding jobs range from apprenticeship training to graduate degrees. There are 22 nontraditional careers for women in the book, including Aircraft Pilots, Architects, Automotive Service Mechanics, Carpenters, Chief Executives, Chiropractors, Civil Engineers, Computer Software Engineers, Construction and Building Inspectors, Construction Managers, Cost Estimators, Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Electricians, Engineering Technicians, Firefighters, Industrial Engineers, Police Officers, Stone Workers, and Surveyors. There are also many rewarding careers that are not traditionally sought-after by male workers. This book features 9 fast-growing careers in which fewer than 20 percent of males are employed. They include Dental Hygienists, Elementary and Middle School Teachers, Health Information Management Specialists, Medical Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Paralegals, Registered Nurses, Special Education Teachers, and Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists. In each career article, we provide an overview of the career and typical work environments, recommended high school classes and activities, educational requirements, personal skills, methods of exploring the career while still in high school, tips on landing a job, typical employers, information on the employment outlook and hot specialties, and contact information for professional associations (including those for female or male workers). The book also features interviews with women and men who have excelled in these careers. They provide advice to young people who are contemplating careers in nontraditional fields. Other features include photographs and useful sidebars that feature books, websites, fun facts about the field, and other helpful information.

Book excerpt: Increasingly, physicians are leveraging their medical training and expertise to pursue careers in non-traditional arenas. Their goals are diverse: · Explore consulting as a way to improve patient care · Lay the foundation for a career in academic medicine · Provide leadership in healthcare · Strengthen ties between a clinic and the community · Broaden one’s experience as a medical student · As a journalist or writer, open a window onto medicine for non-experts Some physicians will pursue another degree, while others may not, in anticipation of moving into public service, business, education, law, or organized medicine. Their common ground is the desire to enhance their professional fulfillment. Drs. Urman and Ehrenfeld’s book features individual chapters on the wide array of non-traditional careers for physicians, each one written by an outstanding leader in medicine who him- or herself has successfully forged a unique career path. A final chapter brings together fascinating brief profiles – “case studies” – of physicians who have distinguished themselves professionally outside of traditional settings. Suitable for readers at any point in their medical career – practitioners, fellows, residents, and medical students – who want to explore possibilities beyond traditional medical practice, the book also sets out common-sense advice on topics such as work-life balance, mentorship, and the relationship between personality and job satisfaction.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of 5 individuals in nontraditional career roles in order to understand what may be done to diminish the obstacles and biases faced by those who pursue nontraditional careers. Of particular interest in this study was highlighting the adjustments these individuals have made or considered as they adapted to their roles. The researcher drew upon the essence of the lived experiences of men and women currently in nontraditional careers to determine how gender bias has created obstacles for those people pursuing a career in a nontraditional field. This phenomenological study's primary research question was, how do people in nontraditional careers characterize their experiences? To further guide the research, the researcher posed the following questions: 1. What are the lived experiences of people who have careers in nontraditional fields? 2. What experiences have people in nontraditional careers had with bias based on their gender? 3. How have the educational experiences of people in nontraditional careers supported or impeded their career choices? To explore these experiences, the researcher employed a qualitative phenomenological approach to inquiry. The researcher collected the data through semi-structured interviews and reflective journals. Through in-depth qualitative analysis, the phenomenon of nontraditional careers and why these gendered distinctions are still occurring today emerged in four themes: educational experiences, positive experiences, negative experiences, and eliminating bias. The four results with interpretations were shown: (1) nontraditional careers are not promoted to young students in K-12 settings, (2) males and females in nontraditional careers are dealing with gender issues from holding a career in a nontraditional field, (3) the right environment in nontraditional careers can help with the emotional toll of the career and keep the nontraditionals in pursuit of that career, and (4) the suggestions on ways to eliminate bias in nontraditional careers relate directly to the unlabeling of nontraditional careers. The study concludes by offering a mixture of the shared perceptions of the participants with recommendations on what may be done to diminish the obstacles and biases faced by those who pursue nontraditional careers.

Book excerpt: An invaluable resource for general readers at any career stage, this book explains why, when, and how to engage in a fulfilling, nontraditional career path that is both inspiring and practical. The paradigm of the successful career has shifted. No longer is working for a single company or even within a single career field throughout one's lifetime the norm. Today, many people are considering nontraditional paths to achieving success. How to Build a Nontraditional Career Path: Embracing Economic Disruption explains what such a career path looks like and details the benefits and challenges of pursuing this option. Author Ron Elsdon identifies the types of individuals who will likely find nontraditional careers attractive and examines critical strategic issues, thereby enabling the reader to assess whether and how such a path might fit their personality, life goals, and career objectives. The information presented will benefit those considering "something different" at their entry to the workforce, individuals in middle or later career stages re-assessing their direction, people re-engaging with a career at an encore stage, or those whose previous career paths have been disrupted by an external event such as job loss.
