Previous studies indicate that children of overweight or obese parents were at higher risk of engaging in health-averse behaviors than were children of parents of normal weight. The current study explored the magnitude of the association between parent's overweight or obese weight status and their ability to recognize overweight or obese weight status in their children. This study was a secondary data analysis of 1,096 parents living with children ages 3 through 14 who participated in the 2010 North Carolina Child Health Assessment and Monitoring Program (NC CHAMP). Multivariate logistic regression was used to calculated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). In the unadjusted model, overweight/obese parents had decreased odds of accurately assessing child weight status (OR=0.78, 95%CI: 0.77-0.79). After adjusting for parent age, income, sex, education, race/ethnicity, marital status, and child sex, the magnitude of the associations attenuated (OR=0.85, 95% CI: 0.84-0.86).These findings are consistent with previous studies in terms of the direction and magnitude of the association and results were statistically significant. Further research in the area is needed using large, nationally representative United States samples and longitudinal study design. Research findings may have important policy implications and could result in changes to interventions focusing on the value of awareness of weight status in children and health education.

This paper explored the relationship between family weight teasing, paternal encouragement to diet, and maternal encouragement to diet and levels of anxiety and depression in a sample of emerging adults. It also examined BWP as a potential moderating variable in these relationships. Family weight teasing was found to be significantly associated with anxiety and depression when controlling for all other variables. Paternal encouragement to diet was linked to depression in correlational analyses. BWP was not found to moderate any of the relationships. Clinical implications and future research directions are discussed.

A 2017 audit of Outpatient Clinics (OPC) in the Ulster Hospital, Dundonald revealed: 28% of children were overweight or obese. In 86% of cases the doctor/nurse reviewing the child did not address the childu2019s unhealthy weight with parents. AIMS We aimed to explore:1. The reasons why doctors/nurses may not raise the issue of childhood obesity with families. 2. Parental knowledge, expectations and attitudes to childhood obesity. METHODSHealthcare Professional Feedback: 45 OPC staff completed questionnaires, participated in focus groups and interviews. Parent Feedback: Questionnaires (both closed & open questions) were administered to 35 families attending paediatric OPC. The quantitative and qualitative data collected was analyzed independently by two co-authors.RESULTSFeedback indicated doctors and nurses often do not address obesity with families because of fear of parent reaction and/or damaging the doctor-family relationship. Many healthcare professionals feel they lack training in how to address obesity in a sensitive but effective manner with families.70% of parents indicated that they were u201cconcernedu201d or u201cvery concernedu201d about childhood obesity. 52% of parents correctly recognised that almost 1 in 3 children in Northern Ireland are overweight or obese. 100% of parents stated that doctors and nurses should always address obesity with families, without any exceptions. 100% of parents agreed that doctors and nurses should receive specialist training to raise the issue of obesity.CONCLUSIONS Parents underestimate the prevalence of childhood obesity but the majority recognise it is a significant health issue. Doctors and nurses often worry about how to broach the subject of obesity but feedback shows that parents expect healthcare professionals to recognise and address it with families. This knowledge will empower doctors to address this often sensitive subject. There is a clear need for specialist training so doctors and nurses raise the issue of childhood obesity confidently and in an empathetic and constructive manner with children and families. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the association between a home-based childhood obesity prevention intervention and preschooler body composition. The family-based intervention focused on the following obesity-related health behaviours: family meals, physical activity, screen time, sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, and sleep routines. Baseline and six-month follow-up data were collected from 42 families participating in the family-based obesity prevention intervention, the Guelph Family Health Study. Families were randomized into a two or four home visit group, or control group. Families randomized into the intervention groups received two or four home visits from a health educator, tailored weekly e-mails and mailed resources. The intervention was based on Motivational Interviewing counseling techniques. The majority of participants identified as Caucasian and were aged 18 months to 5 years. Using the World Health Organization (WHO) growth charts, 67.3% and 71.7% of children were classified as normal weight at baseline and six-month follow-up, respectively. At baseline, 3.9% of preschoolers were classified as overweight and this increased to 5.7% at six-month follow-up. No participants were classified as obese. The intervention was found to be associated with improved body composition outcomes for total body water for the two home visit and combined intervention groups, and for fat mass (% and kg) for the two home visit group. The intervention showed no significant associations with body composition measures for the four home visit group. The findings from this study suggest that a smaller intervention dose may be appropriate to achieve favourable changes in body composition and weight status. This study provides insight into how a family-based obesity prevention intervention in the home setting combined with MI counseling techniques can impact preschooler body composition outcomes.

The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves.
