Book Synopsis Strange Narrators in Contemporary Fiction by : Marco Caracciolo
Download or read book Strange Narrators in Contemporary Fiction written by Marco Caracciolo and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A storyteller’s craft can often be judged by how convincingly the narrative captures the identity and personality of its characters. In this book, the characters who take center stage are “strange” first-person narrators: they are fascinating because of how they are at odds with what the reader would wish or expect to hear—while remaining reassuringly familiar in voice, interactions, and conversations. Combining literary analysis with research in cognitive and social psychology, Marco Caracciolo focuses on readers’ encounters with the “strange” narrators of ten contemporary novels, including Bret Easton Ellis’s American Psycho, Haruki Murakami’s Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, and Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Caracciolo explores readers’ responses to narrators who suffer from neurocognitive or developmental disorders, who are mentally disturbed due to multiple personality disorder or psychopathy, whose consciousness is split between two parallel dimensions or is disembodied, who are animals, or who lose their sanity. A foray into current work on reception, reader-response, cognitive literary study, and narratology, Strange Narrators in Contemporary Fiction illustrates why any encounter with a fictional text is a complex negotiation of interlaced feelings, thoughts, experiences, and interpretations.
Book Synopsis Diseases and Disorders in Contemporary Fiction by : James Peacock
Download or read book Diseases and Disorders in Contemporary Fiction written by James Peacock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this collection address the current preoccupation with neurological conditions and disorders in contemporary literature by British and American writers. The book places these fictional treatments within a broader cultural and historical context, exploring such topics as the two cultures debate, the neurological turn, postmodernism and the post-postmodern, and responses to September 11th. Considering a variety of materials including mainstream literary fiction, the graphic novel, popular fiction, autobiographical writing, film, and television, contributors consider the contemporary dimensions of the interface between the sciences and humanities, developing the debate about the post-postmodern as a new humanism or a return to realism and investigating questions of form and genre, and of literary continuities and discontinuities. Further, the essays discuss contemporary writers’ attempts to engage the relation between the individual and the social, looking at the relation between the "syndrome syndrome" (referring to the prevalence in contemporary literature of neurological phenomena evident at the biological level) and existing work in the field of trauma studies (where explanations tend to have taken a psychoanalytical form), allowing for perspectives that question some of the assumptions that have marked both these fields. The current literary preoccupation with neurological conditions presents us with a new and distinctive form of trauma literature, one concerned less with psychoanalysis than with the physical and evolutionary status of human beings.
Download or read book Diffractive Reading written by Kai Merten and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Putting the New Materialist figure of diffraction to use in a set of readings – in which cultural texts are materially read against their contents and their themes, against their readers or against other texts – this volume proposes a critical intervention into the practice of reading itself. In this book, reading and reading methodology are probed for their materiality and re-considered as being inevitably suspended between, or diffracted with, both matter and discourse. The history of literary and cultural reading, including poststructuralism and critical theory, is revisited in a new light and opened-up for a future in which the world and reading are no longer regarded as conveniently separate spheres, but recognized as deeply entangled and intertwined. Diffractive Reading ultimately represents a new reading of reading itself: firstly by critiquing the distanced perspective of critical paradigms such as translation and intertextuality, in which texts encountered, processed or otherwise subdued; secondly, showing how all literary and cultural readings represent different ‘agential cuts’ in the world-text-reader constellation, which is always both discursive and material; and thirdly, the volume materializes, dynamizes and politicizes the activity of reading by drawing attention to reading’s intervention in, and (co)creation of, the world in which we live.

Book Synopsis Present Tense Narration in Contemporary Fiction by : Irmtraud Huber
Download or read book Present Tense Narration in Contemporary Fiction written by Irmtraud Huber and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Irmtraud Huber considers a wide range of contemporary novels to explore the variety of possibilities and effects of the use of the present tense, as well as investigating the reasons for its popularity. By illustrating the complexity and sophistication of four different types of contemporary usage, Huber’s discussion goes some way towards refuting those critical voices which consider present-tense narration a passing fad and stylistic affectation. As a tense of narration, the present can serve to tell different stories than the past tense, or can tell them differently. By no means a passing fad, it is an important characteristic of contemporary literature.

Book Synopsis Novelistic Inquiries into the Mind by : Grzegorz Maziarczyk
Download or read book Novelistic Inquiries into the Mind written by Grzegorz Maziarczyk and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novelistic Inquiries into the Mind traces the multiple relations between the mind and the contemporary novel. The contributors here examine various types of narrative fiction, ranging from the postmodern novels of J. M. Coetzee and Ian McEwan through the experimental prose of Leslie Scalapino to the popular fiction of James Dashner and Christopher Moore. On the one hand, they investigate novelistic representations of various mind-related issues, including different states of consciousness, Alzheimer’s disease, thought experiments and formation of the self. On the other, by analysing and evaluating in these contexts such narrative devices as unreliable narration, development of conceptual networks or multimodal integration of verbal and non-verbal semiotic resources, they exemplify the multiplicity of techniques whereby the novel can explore the intricacies of mental processes. Taken together, the essays collected here demonstrate the potential of the novel as genre for representing the mind. In its exploration of the problems involved in the linguistic construction of reality, the cognitive function of art and the uncertain status of consciousness, the contemporary novel thus reflects the mind’s urge to understand itself, as well as possible meanings of its own perceptions, creations and projections.

Download or read book Metafiction written by Patricia Waugh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metafiction begins by surveying the state of contemporary fiction in Britain and America and explores the complex political, social and economic factors which influence critical judgment of fiction. The author shows how, as the novel has been eclipsed by the mass media, novelists have sought to retain and regain a wide readership by drawing on the themes and preoccupations of these forms. Making use of contemporary fiction by such writers as Fowles, Borges, Spark, Barthelme, Brautigan, Vonnegut and Barth, and drawing on Russian Formalist theories of literary evolution, the book argues that metafiction uses parody along with popular genres and non-literary forms as a way not only of exposing the inadequate and obsolescent conventions of the classic novel, but of stuggesting the lines along which fiction might develop in the future.
