Book excerpt: In May 1845, Sir John Franklin sailed from England with the ships Erebus and Terror, on an expedition to attempt the discovery of a "North-West Passage," or water communication between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, to the North of the American Continent. No intelligence was received from him after the year following. Numerous expeditions were fitted out and despatched in search of Franklin and his brave crew, both from this country and from America. In 1854, Dr Rae returned with information that the Esquimaux had reported having seen the bodies of "forty white men," near Great Fish River, in the spring of 1850. This intelligence was not considered trustworthy, and Lady Franklin fitted out a private expedition, under the command of Captain M'Clintock, who sailed from Aberdeen in the steam-yacht Fox, July 1857. He returned in 1859 with indisputable proofs of the death of Franklin, and the fate of the expedition under his command,—full details of which he afterwards published. The present volume is an epitome of "Arctic Explorations," an official account of the Second "Grinnell" Expedition in search of Sir John Franklin,—the First Grinnell Expedition having been dispatched in 1850 under Lieutenant De Haven, with Dr Kane as surgeon. These expeditions were fitted out at New York, at the expense of a wealthy and generous merchant of that city, named Grinnell, and Mr Peabody, the eminent American resident in London, whose munificence and liberality are now so well known in this country. In the Second Expedition, the brig Advance was placed under the command of Dr Elisha Kent Kane, assistant-surgeon, U.S.N., a gentleman well qualified, from previous experience, to undertake such an important duty. Dr Kane was born at Philadelphia in 1822, and was educated at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. In 1843 he accompanied the embassy to China, and for some time travelled in the interior of India.

The IPY brought together researchers from multiple countries with the aim of undertaking systematic and coordinated experiments and observations in the Arctic and Antarctic. Harsh conditions, intense isolation, and acute danger inevitably impacted the making and communicating of scientific knowledge. At the same time, changes in ideas about what it meant to be an authoritative observer of natural phenomena were linked to tensions in imperial ambitions, national identities, and international collaborations of the IPY. Through a focused study of travel narratives in the British, Danish, Canadian, and American contexts, Nanna Katrine Lüders Kaalund uncovers not only the transnational nature of Arctic exploration, but also how the publication and reception of literature about it shaped an extreme environment, its explorers, and their scientific practices. She reveals how, far beyond the metropole--in the vast area we understand today as the North American and Greenlandic Arctic--explorations and the narratives that followed ultimately influenced the production of field science in the nineteenth century.

Smith and the writer planned to undertake a journey, during the summer months, to the northern shores of Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba, for the purpose of collecting ornithological specimens. Just before our departure in June, we were joined by Professor C. C. Nutting, who, eminently fitted by his experience as a naturalist, became the leader of the expedition, which was thereafter conducted in the interests of the Museum of the State University of Iowa. During the summer two stations were occupied; the first, near Lake Winnipeg, at the Grand Rapids of the Saskatchewan River; the second, sixty miles above, where the River debouches into Cedar Lake. The results of our explorations have been embodied in a report by Professor Nutting. While at the mouth of the Saskatchewan I met Mr. R. Macfarlance, the ornithologist, who, during a residence in the Fur Country of nearly half a century, had made extensive and very valuable collections of natural history specimens. His enthusiastic descriptions of the field, as yet almost unexplored, roused in me a strong desire to visit the Far North. Professor Nutting, also becoming interested, after our return laid the matter before the Board of Regents of the University and eventually secured their approval of the plan to send me northward to obtain specimens of the larger arctic mammals, especially musk-ox, and, incidentally, "to pick up everything else that I could lay my hands on." It will likewise correct any erroneous impressions which may have arisen from the publication of garbled extracts from the official journals kept by the different members of the Greely party and, by order of the War Department, laid open to the public. By this order, Lockwood's journal and those of others became public property, and hence any reference to them in advance of their official publication is allowable. The few pages devoted to the early life can not be expected to especially interest the general public, but will gratify Lieutenant Lockwood's friends. They are here produced to give them permanency, and to show his sterling character. No attempt is here made to give a history of the Expedition, and only so much of Lockwood's journal is produced as shows his connection therewith. The voyage to Lady Franklin Bay is given more in detail, 2 as it presents a lively picture of an interesting people not much known, and as it exhibits the buoyant spirits with which he entered upon the work, before dissensions in camp had checked them, though without marring his faithfulness and energy. The important part he had in the enterprise, his zeal, energy, and loyalty to his chief and to the cause, all are fully set forth, and will be more clearly seen when the more elaborate history of the Expedition shall be published by Lieutenant Greely, as will shortly be done. Although the journal has been freely used, its language and style have not been closely followed, except in those parts quoted which refer to Lockwood's sentiments and feelings. The deep pathos of these could be expressed as well in no other words.
