Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley claimed to be a man of one book, and early Wesley scholarship accepted uncritically that the Bible was his supreme authority. In the late twentieth century, American Wesley scholars discussed what has been termed the Wesley Quadrilateral (the authority of the Bible, tradition, reason, and experience), and this to some extent helps explain the method by which Wesley read and interpreted the Bible. However, modern biblical reader-response criticism has drawn attention to the central role of the reader in his/her interpretation of scriptural texts. Donald Bullen argues that Wesley came to the Bible as a reader with the presuppositions of an eighteenth-century High Church, Arminian Anglican, in which tradition he had grown up. He then found his beliefs confirmed in the scriptural text. Claiming to base all his beliefs on the Bible, he found himself in controversy with others who made similar claims but came to different conclusions. The implications of this are explored in depth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen renewed interest in divine action, but much of the literature tends to focus on the science-theology discussion. Resulting from multi-year work of the Scripture and Doctrine Seminar, part of KLC's Scripture Collective, this book attends to the portrayal of divine action in one major biblical text, namely Hebrews. In the New Testament, Hebrews is on par with Romans in terms of importance but has too often been overlooked. Contributors to this volume explore the many different ways in which divine action is foregrounded and portrayed in Hebrews. As its name indicates, Hebrews overflows with Old Testament intertextuality, which also makes it a fertile ground for analysis of divine action stretching back into the Old Testament and opening out into different parts of the NT. The essays in this volume: rigorously work the interface of theology and exegesis, all related to Hebrews; offer an overview of the current state of discussion of divine action and the importance of exploring divine action in specific biblical texts, with special reference to William Abraham's recent 4 volume work with OUP; provide an overview of the reception history of Hebrews in theologies of divine action; explore how this has this played out in historical theology and what a retrieval of Hebrews for a theology of divine action might mean today; explore the relationship between the doctrine of God and divine action in Hebrews, including an engagement with classical theism; provocatively explore divine action in the OT, creation, and eschatology in Hebrews; explore the major theme in Hebrews of divine action through the ongoing priesthood of Jesus as portrayed in Hebrews; relate this all to preaching Hebrews today and to spiritual formation. The book's conclusion reflects on the primary action of God speaking in Hebrews.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a contemporary interpretation of John Wesley's theology. Here are a few of the themes: the relation of prayer and the task of theology, war and peace, the controversy over the homosexual lifestye, abortion, the right of private judgment and religious toleration, the commands of love, the implications of deconstructionism and postmodernism, Wesley as a serious theologian, divine sovereignty and human freedom, the preconditions for living well and dying well. These issues, among others, are discussed with ease and grace as the reader is invited to consider the significance of Wesley's thinking for today. This book reflects the veteran insights of a Wesley Scholar whose mind and heart have been shaped by the best of the Wesleyan tradition. Contemporary theology, biblical studies, and social/moral/political issues are interpreted from the perspective of the theology of John Wesley and his relevance for today. The author has served the Church as pastor, college and seminary professor, and seminary president. He combines a pastoral and academic approach that integrates the practical and theoretical disciplines in fresh and relevant ways. His conversational, and even poetic style, informed by seasoned familiarity with his sources, will engage both the theological student and the general reader, and will challenge both to a life-changing encounter with John Wesley's witness to vital Christianity. -- J. Steven O'Malley Asbury Theological Seminary Leon Hynson brings together the theology of John Wesley and the best of today's Christian thinking in these essays. As well, the author offers a clear explanation of Wesley's thought in the context of his 18th century sources. Hynsonshows how Wesley both synthesized and critiqued such thinkers as the Early Church Fathers, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Thomas Cranmer, Richard Hooker, Jeremy Taylor, John Locke, Puritanism, Pietism, and Anglicanism. In a remarkably instructive fashion and with compelling prose, the author brings Wesley's thought into conversation with contemporary theologians and ethicists, including Karl Barth, H. Richard Niebuhr, Albert Outler, Robert Jenson, Martin Hengel, Theodore Runyon, Gerald R. Cragg, and Alasdair MacIntyre. This noteworthy volume brims with the mature wisdom of an experienced pastor and theological scholar. -- Kenneth Cain Kinghorn Asbury Theological Seminary

Book excerpt: John Wesley gave the Methodist movement (and all Christians in general) a discipleship pathway to follow. Wesley began with Three Simple Rules (or “General Rules”), and followed this instruction a year later with the Five Marks of a Methodist (or “Character of a Methodist”). Wesley observed the need for continuous renewal of relationships with God and others, so he established a recurring annual process for God’s people to make One Faithful Promise: The Wesleyan Covenant for Renewal. The study by Heath turns to the practices at the center of Wesley’s understanding of spiritual growth: the means of grace. This book/study guides readers through the five means of grace that John Wesley called “instituted,” meaning these are spiritual practices in which Jesus himself participated and which he encouraged his followers to do. One of the beautiful aspects of Wesley’s theology is that spiritual practices are seamlessly integrated with practices of loving our neighbors well. This is why Wesley said there is no holiness but social holiness. A life of genuine prayer inevitably leads to a life of hospitality, mercy, and justice. Through this book/study participants will consider how each of the five means of grace help us as communities of faith to pray more deeply and live more missionally as followers of Jesus Christ. These means are the ordinary channels that God uses to draw us into a fruitful relationship. These five means or channels are: 1. Prayer 2. Searching Scripture 3. Receiving the Lord’s Supper 4. Fasting 5. Conferencing (communion, fellowship) "Surely John Wesley wanted his teachings to be presented in clear and understandable ways. Elaine Heath’s teaching on the Five Means of Grace are simple and engaging with deep truths. Your group will love it!" - Jennifer Cowart (Executive pastor at Harvest Church, a United Methodist congregation in Warner Robins, GA, near Macon. She co-preaches and directs Discipleship and Emerging Ministries at Harvest UMC.) "Elaine Heath is one of the church’s great teachers and prophets. With engaging stories and clear understanding of Scripture she invites us to experience God’s love through ancient practices that we desperately need. I will be using Five Means of Grace with my congregation as an invitation for those seeking a deeper pathway into discipleship." - Rev. Jacob Armstrong, Providence United Methodist Church, Mount Juliet TN. "Methodists are followers of Jesus who are guided by a “rule of life”, a set of common spiritual practices that put us in a place where we are more likely to experience God’s transforming grace. This brief volume is deceptively filled with guidance for those who would allow the Holy Spirit to guide them. I am grateful to Elaine Heath, who continues to lead us again to the ordinary channels where the streams of mercy, justice and righteousness flow.” - Ken Carter, Resident Bishop, Florida Area, The United Methodist Church and co-author, Fresh Expressions: A New Kind of Methodist Church for People Not in Church
