Book excerpt: The results of cyanidation experiments on a number of gold ores and calcined gold concentrates that contained sulphidic and arsenical minerals or their oxidation products were analysed. It was found that the results were not entirely compatible with previously postulated theories on the refractoriness of such ores. It has been assumed in the past that gold should be recoverable by the cyanidation process unless the surface of the gold particles is not exposed to attack or unless the nature of the ore minerals is such that they react with the cyanide or oxygen in the solution, leaving insufficient quantities of reagents for the dissolution of the gold. Experimental work carried out on pure gold discs has shown conclusively that the dissolution of gold in cyanide solution can be inhibited by the presence of iron sulphide and arsenide minerals and their oxidation products in a manner that can be accounted for only by the formation of strongly adherent films of some as yet unknown species on the surface of the gold. The effects of alkalinity, cyanide concentration, oxygen concentration, rate of agitation, and temperature of solution on the rate of the dissolution of gold in the presence of various minerals were investigated.

Book excerpt: Oxidation procedures based on the chlorine-hypochlorite system were investigated for improving gold recovery from carbonaceous gold ores. The oxidation pretreatment prior to cyanidation was accomplished by (1) addition of sodium hypochlorite to ore pulp, (2) by addition of chlorine to ore pulp, and (3) by generation of hypochlorite in situ by electrolysis of a brine solution used to pulp the ore. Gold extraction of 90 pct was achieved by cyanidation of carbonaceous ore that had been pretreated with 20 lb per ton sodium hypochlorite at 50° C for 4 hours. Similarly, pretreatment of the ore pulp with 35 lb chlorine per ton at 24° to 30° C and 15 hours reaction time resulted in 89-pct gold extraction by subsequent cyaanidation. Concomitant studies showed that electrolyzing the pulp prepared with a brine solution was equally as effective as electrolyzing hypochlorite and chlorine for oxidizing carbonaceous ore constituents that are deleterious to cyanidation. Gold extraction of 90 pct was obtained by electrolysis when 275 lb of ore was treated at 200 amp for 7 hours in an 8- to 10-pct salt solution. Power consumption was in the range of 60 kwhr per ton.

The cyanide process is essentially a chemical one, and a commodious and well-equipped laboratory forms one of the most important and necessary parts of the whole plant. It is the duty of the metallurgist in charge to determine by actual experiment the lowest strength of cyanide solution to extract an adequate percentage of the gold, and also to devise means of overcoming the problems which are inseparable from the treatment of different classes and grades of ore, with so active and subtle a compound as potassium cyanide. The testing and valuing of the ores before, during, and after treatment must be entrusted to a careful and trustworthy assayer. The testing and making up of the working solutions are very simple operations, that may be left to experienced and intelligent workmen who possess a knowledge of arithmetic extending as far as decimals. With free-milling gold ores the actual working extraction will generally be as high as that obtained in the laboratory, but too much reliance must not be placed on the laboratory experiments in the case of ores containing copper or antimony. The author, s experience is that high extractions may be obtained in the laboratory from ores totally unsuited for treatment by the cyanide process on a working scale. The conditions on the one hand are theoretical, on the other actual, and before adopting the cyanide treatment for a sulphide or mineralized ore, working experiments should be made on parcels ranging from two to five tons, in order to ascei-tain the consumption of cyanide and actual extraction.
