Book excerpt: In this paper, recent results of the experimental investigation, which was aimed at disclosing some aspects of shear failure mechanism in concrete beams reinforced longitudinally, are presented. The aim of the test was to investigate the influence of a shear span-to-depth ratio and a beam size on failure mode and shear capacity in the tested beams. It has been found that the shear span-to-depth ratio a/d is an important parameter, which significantly affects the shear failure mechanism in the investigated members. This fact was presented in several scientific papers. However, the second important parameter, which must be taken into account when analysing reinforced concrete beams without stirrups, is the size of the member. The “size effect”, which is described in professional literature as a decrease of shear strength with an increase of the members depth, is not evaluated sufficiently enough. The effective length-to-depth ratio leff/d, which has been identified in this paper, also has a considerable influence on the contributions of the shear resistance mechanism and thus the ultimate shear capacity. In this paper it has been shown that members characterized by the same a/d but different leff/d can fail in a different way.

Advancement in technology has led to the fabrication of High Performance steel. Use of HP steel in reinforced concrete could lead to cost savings by reducing the amount of steel required due to the inherited high strength and increase of the service life of structural members due to its enhanced corrosion resistance. This research is undertaken to examine the use of high performance steel as a feasible reinforcement material for reinforced concrete structures. Commercially available steel, Micro-Composite Multi-Structural Formable (MMFX), conforming to ASTM A 1035, was selected for this study. MMFX steel has minimum yield strength of 100 ksi. This experimental program comprised eighteen tests using nine large-scale reinforced concrete beams subjected to static loading up to failure. The key parameters considered in experimental program were the steel type and the amount of shear reinforcement. This research investigated crack width, modes of failure, deflection, stirrup strain, ultimate load carrying capacity and the behavior of the MMFX steel as transverse reinforcement for concrete beams. Results from the experimental program show that by utilizing the higher yield strength and consequently reducing the reinforcement ratio of MMFX steel, the beams can achieve almost the same load-carrying capacity as the beams reinforced with conventional Grade 60 steel. Also, beams reinforced with MMFX showed similar deflections at service load as the beams reinforced with Grade 60 steel. Therefore, reduction in the reinforcement ratio of MMFX steel, did not affect the serviceability of these beams. Analysis shows that the ACI 318, CSA, and AASHTO LRFD design codes can closely predict the ultimate shear strength for beams reinforced with high performance steel having yield strength up to 100 ksi. The beams were also analyzed using a well-established Mo.

Additionally, this research will also investigate the tensile properties of UHPC to assist in determining the relevant shear properties. Two series of specimens were created for testing: small-scale beam specimens for load-displacement behavior analysis under four-point bending and UHPC prisms for determining the effects of tension stiffening. Both sets of specimens were created using ASTM Grade 60 steel and high strength steel for the primary reinforcement. Finally, numerical analyses using finite element analysis software, based on both continuum and macroelement models, of the UHPC specimens were carried out based on the modified compression field theory (MCFT) to verify and expand upon the experimental results.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research study consists of two separate phases. In the first phase, an experimental study was conducted to identify the shear-enhancement and failure mechanisms behind the ultimate shear strength of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) slender beams by utilizing the full field deformation measuring capability of digital image correlation (DIC) technology. A total of 12 large-scale simply supported SFRC and RC beams with a range of heights including 12 in. (305 mm), 18 in. (457 mm), 24 in. (610 mm),36 in. (915 mm), and 48 in. (1220 mm) were tested under monotonic point load. The greater shear strength in SFRC beams stems from the fiber bridging effect which delays the propagation of the cracks into the compression zone. In contrast to the traditional assumption for either plain concrete or SFRC beams, where the shear contribution resulting from dowel action is completely neglected, this research clearly shows that the dowel action has an appreciable effect on the ultimate shear strength. Its contribution varies from 10% to 30% as the beam depth increases from 12 in. (305 mm) to 48 in. (1220 mm). On the other hand, the compression zone's contribution decreases from 69% to 36%with the increase in beam depth. In addition, the shear contribution from the fiber bridging effect along the critical shear crack stays virtually unchanged at 20%, regardless of beam depth. In this study, the minimum shear strength obtained was in the range of 5 SQRT (f'c) psi (0.42 SQRT (f'c) MPa) for the beams with the greatest depth. This indicates that the maximum allowed shear stress limit of 1.5 SQRT (f'c) psi (0.125 SQRT (f'c) MPa) specified in ACI 318-14 is on the very conservative side. While the size effect on ultimate shear strength of plain concrete beams has been well researched in the past decades, limited tests were carried out to study the extent and mechanism of size effect in steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams. Current American Concrete Institute's ACI 318 Building Code restricts the use of steel fiber as minimum shear reinforcement to beams with a height up to 24 in. (610 mm). In the next phase of the study, in addition to the analyzing of the current testing data, the laboratory test results from the first part of the study and the respective digital image correlation (DIC) images were examined to identify the underlying factors that cause size effect on ultimate shear stress of SFRC slender beams. Moderate size effect was observed in the beams tested in this study. Through the full field strains and a mechanical based analysis, it was found that the size effect is a function of both the beam height and the shear span length. In larger beams, due to the greater horizontal and vertical distance from the compression zone to the supports, the critical diagonal shear crack was able to propagate deeply into the top of the beams. As a consequence, the compression zone exhibits less contribution to shear resistance in larger size beams, and the dowel action becomes more critical. Therefore, a minor flaw in dowel zone such as lacking well-distribution of steel fibers results in early destruction of dowel resistance and shear failure.

Book excerpt: For members and flat slabs without shear reinforcement, the shear and punching shear strength are often the determining design criteria. These failure modes are characterized by a fragile behaviour implying possible partial or total collapse of the structure. Despite extensive research in this field, shear and punching shear in reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, remain complex phenomena so much that the current approach is often empirical or simplified. The ability of Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) to reduce shear reinforcement in reinforced and prestressed concrete members and slabs,or even eliminate it, is supported by several experimental studies. However its practical application remains marginal mainly due to the lack of standard, procedures and rules adapted to its performance. The stationary processes in precast industry offer optimal possibilities for using high performance cementitious materials such as Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) and High Strength Concrete (HSC). For the author, the combination of High Performance Concrete and steel fibres is the following step in the development and the optimization of this industry. The High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (HPFRC) stands between conventional SFRC and Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC). The HPFRC exhibiting a good strength/cost ratio is, thus, an alternative of UHPFRC for precast elements. The principal aim of this work was to analyse the shear and punching shear behaviour of HPFRC and UHPFRC structures without transversal reinforcement and to propose recommendations and design models adapted for practitioners. Several experimental studies on structural elements, i.e. beams and slabs, were undertaken for this purpose. Firstly, an original experimental campaign was performed on pre-tensioned members in HPFRC. A total number of six shear-critical beams of a 3.6 m span each, and two full scale beams of a 12 m span each, were tested in order to evaluate the shear and flexural strength. The principal parameter between the specimens was the fibres (...).

Book excerpt: "Experimental research has been conducted to investigate the performance of reinforced concrete beams with and without longitudinal bar cutoffs. The modifications to the shear design procedure in the 2014 CSA A23.3 Standard have been examined. One of the proposed changes affecting the CSA Standard was in Clause 11.3.6.4, the General Method of Shear Design, stating that if longitudinal bars are terminated in a flexural tension region the calculated value of longitudinal strain shall be increased by 50%. Furthermore, a new Clause 11.2.13 to account for this reduction for members designed by the Simplified Method has been investigated. This new clause suggests lowering the factored shear resistance by 15% over the effective shear depth centered on the longitudinal bar termination point. For the research, two pairs of simply supported beams with different bar combinations were fabricated and tested to investigate the influence of bar cutoffs on the shear strength. Two beams had bar cutoffs while the other two beams had continuous flexural reinforcement without cutoffs. Moreover, the specimen without bar cutoffs had zero transverse reinforcement whereas; the two specimens with bar cutoffs had minimum transverse reinforcement on one end placed locally on either side of the cutoff location. All beam specimens were loaded until shear failure was observed. After the failure of one end of the beam, the beam was strengthened using steel clamps and loading was continued to observe failure on the other end. Results suggest that beams with bar cutoffs resulted in significantly lower shear resistance than the beams having continuous flexural reinforcement. Because of the cutoffs in the tension steel, there is an increase in the steel strains at the cutoff point that reduces the shear strength of the beam. In order to alleviate this effect closely spaced stirrups are required near the cutoff location. " --
